As beaches go it was underwhelming. The sand is black so everything it touches will be dirty. Parking was bloody impossible; took us the first hour driving up and down to finally score a spot. Unbelievable numbers of cars, buses boat traffic and people. There are no beach chairs at all so you’re on the ground. The outdoor showers are full of a layer of thick black mud and the smell of urine will burn your nostrils. The toilets are among the worst I’ve seen in a lifetime of travelling, beyond disgusting. Some food stands reasonably priced, souvenirs pretty but pricey, all vendors were very friendly. BBQ restaurant packed with people waiting to eat so we skipped that option. I’m not sorry we went, but it wasn’t worth the drive we did to get there.

How sad is uncontrolled mass tourism...😔
Nothing to do with my first experience in January 2020: turtles galore, magnificent seabed!
And only 2 swimmers at 7am

In 2024, same period: already 25 bathers at 7 a.m., I quickly saw a single turtle in 2 hours and very degraded seabed...
Malendure: victim of its success 😬

We stayed for a month in a place within walking distance of the beach and we loved it. It’s a vibrant cheerful place and the sea is perfect there
The sand is darker coloured but that makes no difference to anything and is quite coarse, so doesn’t stick to everything like fine sand. There are chairs available to rent most days
Because we could walk there the parking wasn’t an issue for us but if you have to drive there, get there early - parking is a nightmare!

All the interest of this beach lies in the Cousteau reserve and the possibility of meeting a turtle in palm-mask-tuba hiking. Black sand is sticky and there is little shade available due to the multitude of shops, huts, Water Things to do huts that have settled there. It's hard to park there for the same reasons. It is a perfect beach for snorkelling, diving, taking a glass-bottomed boat or kayak tour and having a bite to eat but not to spend a moment relaxing on the sand. It's loud, it's crowded.
We spent a great time there in the water, we found less pleasant the beach itself, even if the sea side view is beautiful.

This beach is very popular because it is the starting point for many activities linked to the Cousteau reserve.
Also, from Bouillante, it is one of the last known beaches.
As a result, it gets crowded very early in the morning and getting lost there is complicated after 9am.
Paid parking in certain seasons.

The beach is fine sand even in the water.
I didn't see a shower there. Damage

We went to Malendure for a pre-booked snorkeling trip. That was great. But getting there by car was not. Even early in the morning, we had to park over 1km away. All the parking places require a ticket. Which you can get from a machine that only accepts coins. And the local shops do not carry cash.
So if you want to go there, be prepared with euro-coins in your pocket.

This dark beach is unmissable because it allows access to the Custeau reserve where you can enjoy spectacular snorkelling. The beach is very busy, the car park is not very large also because there are many street food trucks. To see the turtles you need to stop on the small beach first with access from a very short path among the plants. The water is very calm and you will surely see the large green turtles dancing in the water

Black sand beach
We don't come here so much for the beauty of the beach as for the boat trips, the possibility of diving, renting kayaks... or quite simply putting on a mask and snorkel to try to observe sea turtles. With a little patience, it is very possible.
Apart from turtles and starfish, not much else to observe, however.
We had a great time there.
Be careful, there is very little shade, and the sun is strong.

It’s a great place, with a lot of activities, but it’s very busy with people and cars, which wears of the beauty of the place... nevertheless, try to visit it as it’s a must when visiting the island. From there you can rent a Kayak to arrive to Ile Pigeon.

Superb time spent in Malendure.
Turtles easily visible with mask and snorkel.
But please don't touch the turtles.
Let's respect nature!

Little tip: Pleasant beach very early in the morning!
