This is a nice highway to drive. Lots of stuff to see and do. It is very well maintained, even in the winter. Part of the road does close Winthrop to Ross Lake or so in bad weather. Otherwise it's a nice drive with lots...More

We had only driven across the North Cascades Highway once before, in the 1980's, and, although it's slow and out of the way, it was well worth visiting recently. The scenery, of course, is spectacular. There weren't any services along the way. This highway is...More

Make sure when planning your trip to check to see if the pass is open or not. The road (up at the highest levels) is closed between sometime in November and open again once they've cleared the snow.

The east side is definitely more entertaining/beautiful/full of views than the west side, but the whole highway is beautiful. Spend a day driving through the park, doing some hikes, and stopping at the major viewpoints. Driving east to west earlier in the day is preferred...More

By the time we go to this point on our summer road trip, we had been seeing mountains for almost 10 days and were a little 'mountained' and 'waterfalled' out. Yet, the North Cascades Highway is a beautiful roadway full of mountain vistas, waterfall run...More

We are from Australia. We hired an RV and picked it up in Seattle and the first thing we did was a drive around the scenic loop of the North Cascades highway. The scenery was stunning from beautiful lakes to snow covered mountains. Amazing drive...More

SR 20 is closed for most of the winter. Obviously, the exact dates can change from year to year. To get a good guess on when that is likely to be during a future time, there is a website which I am not allowed to post here... More

Do yourself a favor and try to stay overnight in Winthrop WA. You can do it in one day (leave Seatttle very early) but an overnight better. Next day continue east and then south to Wenachee. Then back to Seattle via... More
