We had the pleasure of visiting the crater when it was exploding with lava and fire. Simply amazing along with the steam vents and lava tubes. If you are in Kona rent a car and drive to Kilauea. Its much cheaper than a tour plus...More

We came to the National Park through our tour guide Lee of Wild Orchid Tours, and we were enraptured with the magic of these landscapes. Simply stunning! We loved how the climate could seemingly change within only a few kilometers. I personally loved the steam...More

If you're coming to the Big Island don't miss Volcano National Park! I would suggest staying at a hotel near the park for at least one night. That way you can see the lava pool at night and look at the stars. The sky was...More

The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must-see on the Big Island. It has a lot of unique natural features and is a worthy day trip from Kona. The Thurston Lava tube, hot spring geysers and the drive down to the shore were highlights of...More

We were fortunate enough that the crater was very active this morning with huge splattering lava that was visible from the observation deck, and even better with binoculars. Wish we could get closer. Due to the heavy activity, most of the road around the crater...More

What a wonderful adventure! And worth the drive if you're staying in Kona, a beautiful full day trip, filled with breath-taking scenes and a lot of knowledge. The Jaggars Museum all the way down to the coast, stopping to go look at crates etc. Another...More

Extraordinary place. In one location you'll see beautiful canyons and at others miles of harden flows of lava. Amazing National Park. You need at least two days to take in all in and enjoy. The park is filled with different lengths of hikes for all...More

This park is incredibly diverse, and deserves at least a full day! I arrived on Friday afternoon and went to the Visitor's Center to get information and plan for Saturday. We took advantage of the time and drove until the Jaggers museum to see the...More

This is a must-do on the Big Island. We took the advice of other TripAdvisor posters and arrived early to beat the tour buses. The park is open 24 hours so we arrived around 8am (Visitor Center opens at 9am, but there are bathrooms at...More

One in our party has difficulty walking. Are there part you would recommend and part you would suggest we avoid? We would hate for him to miss this experience.

Hi. You can drive part of the way to the volcano but have to walk the rest. The hills are more like slopes. It's pretty much a straight shot there, with not a whole lot to see until you get to the volcano. Keep in mind it is... More

Travelling with another family to the park. In total we have 6 kids ages 7 to 19. We are only staying one day. What would be the best time to arrive, hike, and see lava flow?

You will want to visit the Jagger Museum and lookout for the best view of Pele's glow. There are some beautiful day hikes, but if you go to Jagger in the evening, guaranteed you'll get some great shots of the crater.
