If you can only do one hike, do this one. Hike counter clockwise around the crater. This provides great views from the crater rim, then end the hike be walking across the crater floor. You can see and actually walk up to heat/steam vents in some areas. Place your hand over them, they feel warm about 105 F.

This hike was great! So much variety, from the rain forest above to the crater floor, it was interesting and fun the entire 4 miles. The hike was easy to moderate for these two 60 year olds. It's was not crowded so it was fun to take our time and enjoy. We ended the hike spectacularly with the Thurston Lava... More

While it is approx. 6.4 kms return, the path is well maintained, hardest part is ascending back up. Our kids (7 and 9) completed it no problem, in fact stayed interested the whole time because it moves from trail to a path right on the crater floor then back up. Pack water and a light snack just in case.

You start high up in the woods and hike to the far side of the crater where you descend to the floor of the crater. Then you hike across the lava to the other side and hike back up to the top. It is a very doable hike for a 65 year old. I would highly recommend it.

You can do this on your own or with a volunteer guide. You can do this as a hike or stroll around this 4.5 mi trail but I would do it counterclockwise. Go up the steep at the end. It is very well marked with markers corresponding to a guide so you know what you are seeing. The volunteer guides... More

From the road, to the open jungle, to the devastated area, to the caldera, to the closed jungle, to the lava tunnel, back to the road! What a hike this is. It emcompasses everything you'd want in one hike and in a short time (we did it in about 2h but it can be longer if you are photo intense).

If you like hiking and visiting Volcanoes National Park, this hike is for you! The Crater Rim trail was a close second for us, but it was too long and woul dhave taken us longer to complete, so we decided to do a smaller loop. The Kilauea Iki Trail is about 4 miles round trip. You walk along the rim... More

Parking at the Destruction Trail car park, we accessed the crater through a great trail that included great natural surrounds. Down the steps, we stopped in awe at the edge of the crater before heading across. Crossing the crater made me feel like I was walking on the moon. An amazing experience! Once across you can walk up the opposite... More

This 4 mile loop allows to discover several different landscapes. This hike deserves a 5 star however it comes second after the trail from the summit of the Haleakala volcano on Maui which is really the best in class
