- ChrisHFrederick, Maryland551 contributionsNicely done Visitor CenterVisited here a couple of different days the last week of September 2023. Closest visitor center to Gatlinburg, We enjoyed the small display museum of plants and animals found in the park. The rangers were helpful. The restrooms were clean. No park movie available. A larger park store (as usual nowadays). Parking ticket kiosks are outside. You need either a $5 day pass or a $15 weekly pass. We did see the parking lot being monitored today. As noted by others and as prevalent in all areas of the park, parking can be difficult or even non-existent due to the overwhelming crowds. We took the short trail to the small Cataract Falls. Nice walk but expect that the falls are more impressive after a good rainfall. YMMV.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 October 2023
- AmandaMaryland152 contributionsYou can quickly buy parking pass hereThis was our first stop in the park. They have several machines out front that make it easy to get your parking pass, just make sure you know your license plate number when you go to get the parking pass. Inside most of the exhibits were closed when we visited, but we were able to get brochures, use the restrooms, and stop at the bookstore. Passport stamps are right inside by the entrance, since I always forget my NPS passport I have started buying a postcard at the bookstores and stamping that. If your kids are doing the Junior Ranger program you have to actually buy the booklet here, I think it was $4. The ranger said they charge for the booklet since park entry is free.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 January 2024
- Melissa RGrand Rapids, Michigan412 contributionsExcellent guidanceAlthough very busy on Easter Sunday (and many spring breaks), we were immediately greeted and helped! We were asking about trails, waterfalls and wildlife sighting opportunities with less popularity. (Fewer people, better parking, etc). We walked away with a month's worth of ideas! The displays were very helpful in learning about the birds, animals and vegetation in the area. We always like perusing the gift shop and it was busy! But the purchase line moved very quickly. Great resource for your visit to the Smokies.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 April 2024

A gift shop features all things Smokey Mountain. Toilets are clean, and the drink vending machines are excellent value at $2.00.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2024
- della42616 contributionsUnique day in Smoky Mountain National Park.We parked here for $5. Then got on the Gaitlinburg Trail for 2 miles and enjoyed a shady no hills easy walk to Gaitlinburg. About another 1/2 mile into town we found the Gaitlinburg Skypark. We took the Skylift up to the top and walked across the Skybridge, which is the longest pedestrian cable bridge in North America. We had no clue about any of this and just happened upon it. If you’re the “adventure” type family like we are and can walk 5.5 miles round trip then I’d suggest doing this! Bring water so you don’t need to spend extra money. It was a great time and took lots of pics. So happy we “winged it” and made today unique for our family vacation to Gaitlinburg/Pigeon Forge.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 June 2024
- MickeyGW65Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania53 contributionsFirst Stop in the Smoky MountainsThis was our first stop in the park. Great place to get park maps and the required parking permits. However, I would recommend getting the parking in advance on recreation.gov. Good information and small museum located inside.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 July 2024

First of all, we were so grateful that Smoky Mountain National Park opened at all during Covid and that there were rangers working in the park.
That said, the center is currently of minimal interest. I believe only 40 people are allowed in the center at one time and since the park is very busy in the summer, there is often a line just to get in. Once we were able to enter, we were disappointed to discover that all exhibit areas and the movie theater remain closed at this time. The only thing open were the store (go figure) and and the information desk. I asked one specific question (whether or not the parking lot at the Tremont Institute was open) and the ranger on duty gave me the incorrect answer.( He said it was open and once we arrived we found a locked gate.) Not the end of the world, we figured out where to park, but isn't that a pretty basic question that the rangers should know? During covid, I would recommend getting your information from the website, bypass the visitor center and spend your time in more productive ways.

Amazed how many people were there. I was barely able to find a parking spot and when I went to go inside I learned they weren't even letting people in. There was a ranger in a plexiglass box answering questions.

After hiking up Rainbow Falls, we doubled back to Gatlinburg and re-entered the park at Sugarlands. We used this opportunity to get an official park map/newsletter, get our NPS passport cancellation stamps, and pick up a few postcards in the gift shop. There were a few other areas in the visitor center, including a small museum, that we didn't explore, but it looked well-curated. Staff were restricting occupancy to 50 people due to COVID, but we didn't have to wait very long.

Order Smokey Mountain auto tour information online because you won't be able to get it at Sugarland Visitors Center. Only a few people allowed in Welcome Center at one time even if masked. Parking lot, though large, was crowded and full. We decided to just drive through on our own. This was at 8:15 am on a Tuesday.
Drove Newfound Gap first day but the experience could have been so much better with history information. After completing the drive we again tried to stop at the Visitors Center however the traffic in/out was so bad we kept going.

A must stop if exploring the park. They had a small line to get into the center (thanks to COVID) but it goes quick. They have maps and have lots of great info on trails and have great recommendations. Gift shop has lots of stuff! If you have kids I'd recommend the Jr Ranger books (buy the book for $2.50 in the shop) to fill out and get the wooden Jr Ranger Badge. Cataract Falls is behind the center I'd you have time for a quick hike. Parking is bad so go early or plan on circling around. They have bathrooms and bubbler there too.

Was here midweek during peak times. Parking lot was almost full but short time for people coming & going. They had tents outside with staff to help keep track of people entering the building because of Covid restrictions & to answer questions. The gift shop was typical and a decent size but other options were closed. The bathrooms are in an adjacent building & I can’t comment on those. Staff in & out were wearing masks. You are able to pick up a simple park map outside.

When our taxes help fund places like this, you feel good! The Sugarlands Visitor Center has a large map of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in a display that you can look down into and see where things are located. There are pamphlets you can get here. They have minimal prices on them and jars to put your money in just to help defray the cost. You can get a newspaper guide here with a map at the center of it. There is a 20 minute video that gives you some history of the area. They also have a great display area showing plants and critters you will find in the Smokies. The gift shop has t-shirts, books, postcards, stickers, and a number of souvenir items. All of this in one building and so nice. There are trails you can hike starting in this area and you can get a map of those here, too.

Stopped here for an orientation and to stamp our NPS books. Only allowing so many in at a time and most of the exhibits are closed because of COVID-19. Gift shop is open and they’re encouraging mask wearing. Good place to stop for information.

Is the Gatlinburg Trail fairly easy? We are visiting with my parents who love nature, but are not as sure on their feet as they used to be. Thank you.
Written 9 August 2019
The Gatlinburg Trail is very easy and well maintained. It can easily be accessed at the end of River Road in Gatlinburg. There are a few parking spaces by the trailhead. There is also parking in front of the Welcome sign for the National Park. If you are taking pictures at the Welcome sign, you can access the Gatlinburg Trail by walking the short path to the right of the sign. The path runs along the river. There is one small and gentle hill. The wooded area of the trail ends at the Park maintenance facility. If you wanted to walk to the Sugarland
Visitor Center, you start walking along the road for about .4 miles.
As you near hwy 441, you get on a sidewalk that passes in front of the park headquarters. The sidewalk will take you in between the visitor center and the restrooms.
Written 30 August 2019
Can someone recommend a short easy trail/s around that area? We would have younger kids with us and have 3-4 hours to spend there. Perhaps a nearby place where we can see animals, waterfalls etc.
Written 19 February 2019
Cataract Falls trail is located behind the visitor center. Short and easy to hike. Just up Newfound Gap Road/hwy 441 S is the Sugarland Valley Nature Trail. It is a concrete .5 mile loop trail that goes past the river.
It is about .5 miles from the Sugarland Visitor Center but you will need to drive the trailhead.
The Gatlinburg Trail is located at the very end of River Road in Gatlinburg which is no more than a 5 minute drive from the Visitor Center. When you leave the visitor center, take a left to get back to New found Newfound Gap Road. Take a left to Gatlinburg. Just past the welcome sign to the park (on the left) there will be a road to the left. Thus is the very end if River Road. There is a few parking spaces. If you miss the turn, turn left at the light. Turn left at the stop sign. This will get you to the parking on River Road. The trail is very easy and flat. It runs along the river and walk as much or as little as you like. You can actually get to the visitor center on this trail but the last .4 miles require walking along a side road which you might not want to do with kids.

Do the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail and Fighting Creek Trail both start at the visitor center?
Written 9 December 2018
Sugarland Valley Nature Trail is located about 1/2 mile from the Sugarland Visitor Center on Newfound Gap Road. It is a paved 1/2 mile loop trail suitable for wheel chairs.

Anyone seen elk? Heading that way Thursday.
Written 30 September 2018
This answer is for others...
An article dated 6/19/19 spotted 2 elk at the Sugarland Visitor Center. They separated there and one went into Gatlinburg and the other was heading in the opposite direction. Spotted near Meigs Falls. That one could easily make it to Cades Cove. It is hard to say where it will end up but signs are posted to be careful if you spot one and stay 50 yards from it. These elk have come to TN before but return to NC during mating season.

Is there an easy trail at this visitor center? Does it have a waterfall and/or stream? Name of trail?
Written 8 July 2018
Yes. It is directly behind the building. It is the Cataract falls trail. Very easy walk on the trail along side a creek. The falls at the end are a bonus. You just turn around and walk out the same trail.
