I very much enjoyed our train trip and I love the bartender kale. She was delightful. However the pastries were stale and dry and that was very disappointing. The conductor was great t. There was one thing though that was very very bad for me. When we were getting ready to board up at the Canyon I was standing right in front of the back of the train, Along with some other people. One of the hostesses on the train rang the bell to board and it went off in my ear and almost felt like it blew a ear drum. My ear hurt last night and I feel like I'm having a little bit more trouble hearing from it today. She should definitely tell people to stand back if she's going to blow that horn. That was awful.

This depot, completed in 1910, and listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1987 is the terminus of the Grand Canyon Railway located at Grand Canyon Village.
It is the last operational log depot in the United States and has been nicely preserved and is currently still in operation.
Inside is are restrooms and on the lobby area walls are hung numerous photographs and posters.

It was really interesting to see the railway going to the Grand Canyon and it was a lovely train and they did some fun acting stuff before we got on the train and that was fun. The only thing that was bad is that I was on a Trafalgar Tours and I had a terrible Experience with an awful tour guide, Bryan Smith. Since he refused to listen to me and keep me on first floors and make me go up and down steps, along with many many other things that went wrong on this terrible trip, it ruined the experience for me, but the train ride was lovely to the Grand Canyon.

It was fun to imagine ourselves coming here in the early 1900's. As a train buff the trains were interesting and the depot was small but interesting . We walked up to the hotel, the canyon overlook was awesome. Next time we will book the train to come up to the canyon and take the shuttle buses to get around. Great experience if you enjoy our nations history. We are in our 70's and did not find the uphill walk to be too intimidating.

We visited Oct 28 and very much enjoyed the trip from Williams to the Grand Canyon Village. We traveled First Class and had facing seats which allowed us to visit throughout the trip, to and from. Service from Christina was great. Great trip even with COVID restrictions.

The history of the depot is worth checking it out. Go and see if you can find sections of the gift shop that use to be one of the Harvey Hotels. The depot is a historic treasure. The gift shop has a lot of unique gifts for all ages.

If you are young or spry and like to walk, go forward it! Otherwise you have a train ride with a boring view! No views of canyon from train. And when you get to the canyon there is a lot of walking. Uphill too! You get to see as much of the canyon as you can walk too; but mostly the same view. Which is the only awesome thing on this tour! Little to no direction on where to find food or anything else. Next time we will do it with a small group tour and get some info on the canyon!

Took the 10:30 train to the south rim in one of the first class cars. Christina was our hostess and she was first class! Very relaxing and comfy seats. Free snacks and beverages and and even an onboard musician. Since we were first timers to the park and knew little about how to get around or good spots, Christina took the time to give us maps and explain time between spots, good places to eat, etc. highly recommend this experience......worth every cent!

Don't expect anything elaborate. It's a railway station with the history of the train depot. It's dark inside, not very comfortable and there's much more to see in the village than at the depot.

Apparently I did not do enough research on this prior to going. I incorrectly assumed you would actually get some views of the grand canyon or at least rock formations on the train, so just wanted to give others a heads up that this is not the case. It is a train ride to the Grand Canyon, through farm country and some wooded areas. If you are into trains or westerns this might suit you otherwise I recommend just driving to the Grand Canyon yourself. For what it was, it's a little over priced, a definite tourist trap.

I just made reservations for the trip on August 13th, 2024 without realizing the train does not go to the visitor center. Can I change the date of my reservations and how do I get to the visitor center since I have a problem with walking.
Written 7 June 2024
I'm unsure about changing the date, but, there is a free bus system in the park that will take you to the main Visitor Center if you would like to go there. The Blue Bus Route is the one you will want to use, which has a bus stop right by the train depot.

We are taking the Railway in a week. Are there places to get something to eat or do we need to make reservations? Thanks!

We will be staying in the Cavern Suite at the Grand Canyon Caverns. How close is your hotel to that? Thinking of staying with your hotel the next night, and taking the train tour which sounds unique!

Not sure, but I had no problem correcting my reservations with a phone call. I screwed up the Internet order and was gladly helped to get things right. I don't believe they are in the busisness of stiff arming their guest.

How far is the walk from the train depot to the Visitor's Center and is there time if I decide to take one of the tours via the train?
Written 12 August 2016
The walk from the train to the visitor center is not far but it is up hill. I would say about 10 minutes. the train trip includes a bus tour and the bus drops you back off in various places.

Hi - does anyone know if you need to book the Grand Canyon railway in advance or can you just book on the day? I will be there around 17th September, thanks
Written 8 May 2016
Depends on which class you book as the higher-end ones tend to have lower occupancy. In September you shouldn't have much trouble though in any case.
The real question is why book it at all? You'll spend the entire morning on the train with NO views of the canyon traveling 30 MPH through the desert. If you book the round trip (one-way costs 2/3 the round trip fare and then you still have to get back) then you'll get just a few hours at the rim to pack in as much as you can before having to get back for the slow return ride.
Skip the train and enjoy more time at the canyon. The kids may enjoy it but you're at the Grand Canyon so book a train ride somewhere else where you don't have one of the 7 wonders of the world waiting for you!
