- SoSoCak73 contributionsA great experience if you can stand the trip through HomesteadWe rented bikes and did an out and back to the tower, about 14 miles. Saw tons of alligators, birds, and even a crocodile (which I guess are quite rare there.) A great way to experience the park. The bikes had baskets, so we were able to bring a picnic, which we ate on a bench at the base of the tower. Highly recommend. The only downside is that you can't get there via the main park entrance, but instead have to take a very long and ugly trip through Homestead, which is the most garbage-strewn town I have ever seen. It took maybe a half-hour but felt much, much longer.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 December 2023
- Mike FAntigo, Wisconsin538 contributionsGators right there!Nice visitor center, did our jr. ranger books here, bought some souvenirs. Did not do the tram but went for a walk for maybe a mile or so down the paved trail along the canal. Saw 4-5 gators right there along the trail, tram may be cool if we come back...but the parking lot gets full so timing is key. We pulled in and the wait was an hour for a spot. We turned around and parked back out on 41 and walked in; so glad this was an option! A neat area with lots to see depending on how much time you want to spend, my kids loved it!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 December 2023
- mbhanson9426 contributionsSo Many Alligators!!!Don't miss Shark Valley!!! We rented bicycles and did the 15 mile ride...if you are physically capable (it's an easy ride), skip the tram and do this instead. We must have seen 50+ alligators, the majority of them literally laying on, or next to, the bike path. It was neat to see them in their natural habitat and it was one of the best experiences of our trip to Key West. Highly recommended!!!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2024
- Robert LAmherst, Massachusetts1,615 contributionsSee the Everglades only o n c eA couple of days ago we explored the southern part of the Everglades via the Coe entrance. Coming here to Shark Valley didn't add anything to the experience. The park opens around 8:30 and the parking lot holds no more than 100 cars. Then you can wait for a while to even get in. We saw several gators.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 January 2024
- Sharon A1 contributionMike and Bethany are a great team. Fantastic tour! What a great tour! We took the last tram of the day, 4pm. Apparently that is the best time to see wildlife. Especially since the sun sets early. Mike and Bethany were our tour guide and tram operator. Mike was fantastic! He was funny and knowledgeable and knew how to get people on the tram to engage with beauty around them. Bethany was so skilled! She knew the best places to stop and see wildlife. Avoiding bicyclists is quite a challenge but she had it under control. Ask for this team and you won't be disappointed!Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 January 2024
- Colleen CTroy, New York2,518 contributionsIf you want to see Alligators this is a MUST!Shark Valley is on the Northern end of the Everglades NP. It truly only has 2 trails that loop with each other as 1. One way is 8 miles long to an Observation Tower. You can take a tram though. If you want to see Gators this trail is an amazing way to see them in their environment ~ or laying right on the pavement catching some rays.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 January 2024
- Melissa B2 contributionsVisiting from MichiganWe visited Shark Valley in February 2024 and had a fantastic morning there. We got tickets upon arrival for the tram that took us to the observation tower. I highly recommend this because it is very informative and you are able ti see so much wildlife. We were not expecting to enjoy the Everglades so much. We saw countless birds, alligators, crocodiles, and even baby alligators! The tower is impressive. If we visit again, we would like to bike it. It was a warm day and we were very comfortable on the two hour tram ride!Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 February 2024

Lots of alligators and beautiful birds. But mostly alligators, lots, more than we’ve seen anywhere.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 February 2024
- klm404Paris, France32 contributionsInteresting only if you rent bikes. Two pieces of advice : 1) arrive at park opening (8h30) and avoid the rush hours, otherwise you will have to wait more than 1h to get into it. 2) rent a bike to cycle the 20-mile loop, otherwise the place has no real interest. Good alternative (100% free) : go to the "loop road" a few miles after Shark Valley on the way to Naples. Hundreds of birds, many alligators and beautiful environment.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 February 2024
- Mary AAntikyra, Greece8 contributionsAwesome wildlife bike ride!We got there around 9:30 am and rented bikes. 25 dollars a person for a single-speed beach cruiser. We loved this 15-mile ride. You go against tram traffic and we only passed about 3 trams the whole time. We saw so many alligators including two babies. Beautiful birds, herons, egrets, ibis up close. And one crocodile! The 15-mile loop is fantastic and took us about 2 hours. We love to bike and it was the perfect distance. Took longer on the way out to the observation tower because we stopped a lot. It can be hot during the middle of the day, so probably best to go in the morning or late afternoon.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024

This is a hard review to do as we love National Parks and the Everglades is no exception but we had limited time at the end of our vacation to go through so we opted for the tram tour. I could not book months in advance in 2019 as I couldn’t buy tickets for peak times of 11, 12, 1, and 2. Only offered for 9, 10, 3, and 4. We took a chance. The park was filled to the max many were parking on the road. You can pull in and wait in line as when parking is full it is one out one in. We called an hour ahead and they stated they had tickets for all times still but when we got there the next tram available wasn’t for two hours. We asked if we could get on a waiting list of someone didn’t show. I was personally treated horribly by the concessioner attendant. She stated I should have planned ahead as she doesn’t have anyone not show this time of year as they have been planing for a long time. I said it is hard to when you cannot buy online and she is like well I have many reservations right here so you could have. This is a total lie and completely inappropriate for her to engage me in that way. In 2019 you could not buy any tickets for the times I mentioned. Now in the new year it appears they sell the first 20 online then the rest first come first serve. We actually did get on an earlier tram as she did work with my husband as tickets were handed back in. The ride however doesn’t give you a great experience. They don’t really show down long enough for anyone to appreciate the wildlife or scenery. If you want to take pictures it is very hard and you have to be quick. With my DSLR camera it was hard to have time to focus and snap a picture before we were moving again. Also the tram has a vibration that messes with that ability to focus. You have 20 minutes at the tower which is not long enough to walk the small trail and up the tower. We also had to listen to the last doing our tour talk about bicyclists not stopping for the tram A LOT. It got really old really quick. The tram just appears to be a cash cow operation. It isn’t quite comfortable to ride and doesn’t offer a personal experience. We walked the trails when we got back and enjoyed taking our time. If you go and have time in your schedule bring your bike or rent one and bike the pathway. It would be more intimate and on your own time. It is a beautiful part of the park and should be enjoyed.

We decided to the Everglades a little last minute so by the time we even thought of Shark Valley, the tram tours were sold out. We did NOT want to walk the 15 miles to the observation tower so we opted for the shorter trails (Bobcat and Otter). Overall it takes like 2ish hours.
We went in the morning, which was a great move because the line is already pretty long to enter this part of the park. Better yet, the animals were all out and about doing their morning routines. I think we saw at least 5 gators up close and personal. Best of all, we got to see baby gators near their mama just hanging out. They were so cute. It really was a special experience.
We were also very fortunate to watch an anhinga bird do its thing—it speared a fish and swam around with it before hopping onto a branch. A ton of us tourists just watched as it bonked the fish off its beak and threw it into its mouth, almost cartoon-ish like.
The trails are okay, but you can just stick to the main road. Trails may get muddy. We didn't see much while we were on them.
This part of the park put my expectations so (unrealistically) high for the remainder of the trip lol. No need to worry about bugs either!

We loved our visit to Shark Valley. We saw a ton of gators of various ages and sizes, turtles and birds. We even saw a bunch of gator hatchlings in a little pool tucked by the side of the road at the end of the otter trail. We only had about 1.5 hours so we rented some bikes and hit the trail, and we were amazed at how much we saw even though we only got about 2 miles or so along the trail before we turned back. I would skip the tram - it's definitely more interesting to take your time and stop wherever you want for as long as you like!
Tips:
Visit during the week for fewer crowds and less waiting.
Even if the sign is posted saying the lot is full, drive up to the guard house and see if there's space. They leave the sign up, but people come and go so if there isn't a line to get in, there's probably an open space.
Don't believe reviews that say you can park on the road and walk in for free to avoid the parking fee - pedestrians pay $15 each to enter.

Ok, the bikes are past their best, but mine rode fine. I arrived just before the gates opened. Even though it was Easter Sunday, there were only a few other cars entering at that time and it was obviously the coolest part of the day. I booked a bike in advance, which might not be necessary if you go that early, but certainly is if you go later - by the time I returned at 11:30, there was a waiting list for bikes and people just had to wait for bikes to be returned before setting off.
I went really slowly for the first half, because there was just so much to see! I was stopping every 30 seconds or so. A lot of people were flying past me and would have missed a lot. I don't really see the point of doing the bike ride if you go fast. May as well not get hot and sweaty and do the tram instead. At the observation tower I turned around and went back the same way, as I heard that there was less wildlife on the second half of the loop. On the return leg I pretty much zoomed back in about 40 mins as I had seen so much on the first leg and it was getting very hot. I did still stop a few times and saw some new things. I saw so many people just starting off at the hottest time of the day and it seemed a bit crazy - plan better!
I liked the bike option because I could take things at my own pace, which allowed me to stop often, but I was also able to go all the way to the observation tower and back within 3 hours. I'm glad I did as I saw different things the further along I went, although for those with less time/physical ability, even going 2 miles out and back would still be worthwhile. Definitely do-able on foot, but it would be a long day in the sun to go all the way to the tower and back.
I went on a 1.5 hour airboat tour after, which was super fun and interesting, but I saw many more gators and birds at Shark Valley. It was a great combination to do for a daytrip.

We paid to get in ($30), rented bikes ($9/hr) and set out on the 15 mile loop, stopping off at the observation tower (where there are bathrooms and water refill stations). Amazing amount of wildlife! Had previously been on an airboat tour and saw only one alligator - here we saw probably 30-40 close up, plus a whole group of babies stacked on top of each other. Lots of interesting birds, too. A fun day. Honestly, the tram tour looked very boring. Definitely walk or ride for a better experience - you don't have to do all 15 miles to see a lot.

We spent 15 min. waiting in line to enter the small car park near the visitor center. I was afraid that renting a bike would not be possible because of the queue to the park. My fears turned out to be unfounded. We easily borrowed bikes at USD 9 per hour. The whole loop took us 3 hours. Along the way, we got off the bikes many times to take a close look at alligators, turtles and countless species of birds. The feeling of freedom was fantastic, we were the masters of our time. If anyone doesn't have much time to explore the Everglades (we spent 3 days in the park), then Shark Valley is the most important place to see in addition to airboat rides.

We met up with our son at Shark Valley in Everglades National Park to visit and take a tram tour with a naturalist before sunset. The naturalist tour guide was exceptionally well-versed on all the wildlife we saw, and the birds and alligators were particularly abundant at that hour (4-6 pm in February). We saw numerous alligators, some with lots of tiny babies, egrets, cormorants, wood storks, herons, ibis, anhingas, osprey, purple gallinules, and even the shy roseate spoonbills...and much more! There is a tower one can go part-way up to see long range views and a movie at the Visitor Center which explains a lot of what’s in the park. It was a very worthwhile experience!

We did not arrive at the entrance until 11:30 and the parking was full so we had to wait for 30 mins before enough had left. Once the car parking is full they operate a one out one in policy for car parking.
I’d tried to book the tram ride online but there was no availability.
It was a unexpected delight to find that once inside the park that the tram ride was not full so we purchased tickets at $26 each.
Trams seem to be every hour on the hour.
What a great adventure touring around shark valley in the Everglades on a tram; so much to see over 2 hours; it’s like a wildlife savannah.
The tram takes 40 mins to get to the viewing tower at the end of the loop. Passengers can get off for 20 mins to use the restroom and visit the tower before the tram returns to the visitor centre, 2 hrs after its departure.
The guide was so knowledgeable about the history, flora, fauna and eco issues. Well worth the trip down highway 41 and you probably see more than on an airboat. This is an anhinga bird drying it’s plumage and baby gators on lily pads with mum watching close by.
I’d recommend a visit.
PS Keep your receipt because this gives a week’s entry to other Everglades national parks.

We are so glad that we went to Shark Valley to get the real Everglades experience. It wasn’t that far from Ft. Myers and well worth the drive. We went early on a Monday morning because it can get get crowded on weekends during the winter months. Going on the 2 hour tram ride was the highlight. Our guide Ricky and driver Taylor made sure that we had the opportunity to learn about and see as much as possible of the terrain and wildlife along the route. Ricky gave us all the important information and Taylor stopped whenever she spotted something of interest. We saw so many alligators, birds, and special plants. These two young people are knowledgeable and passionate about the Everglades and made this a great trip.

Bike rentals were great. The 15 miles is very doable. Bikes were in good condition and we had no problem with them. We did not have a reservation and arrived at 11am on a Wednesday with no problem. There was no line at the NPS entry either. I'm sure that's often not the case during busier parts of the week.
We did the ride counter clockwise and enjoyed the first half much more. Saw probably 25 alligators, including a nest of newly hatched babies right next to the road. Nothing ever felt dangerous. Lots to see along the way. Once we got to the opposite end of the ride by the observation tower, we had our lunch. We did not walk up the tower. No picnic tables. Just had to grab a curb spot, but there was plenty of spots to sit on benches opposite the bathrooms as well. There IS water available at the restrooms, so you can refill your water bottles, which was great.
For the ride back, unless you're really into birding, I'd recommend returning the way you came; because of the waterway there was much more to see up close. Instead, we did the full loop and saw much less wildlife on the second half of the loop. It was easier riding, but wasn't nearly as interesting. It also gets quite hot. It was mid 80's for us and we were sunburned and tired when we got back.
We were there about 2.5 hours or so. Cell service is spotty in the area.

Hi. I'm traveling to Miami later this month and have 1.5 maybe 2 days to spend in the Everglades. I will be based in Homestead, have rented a car and I'm interested in wildlife and hiking/exploring. Since I will split the 2 trips per different nearby locations, my main question is where shall I go on my full day at the park: Ernest Coe & Royal Palm entrances, or Shark Valley? Where are there more things to see and where should I spend more.time in? I want to do both trails at Royal Palm (Anhinga and Gumbo) and the bike trail at Shark Valley. Another question: does it make sense to use the day on Shark Valley and drive up to Cypress Forest? Is it a long drive? Saw some.pics and seemed very wild and probably with less people. Thanks

Enjoy!

We are travelling with our 13 and 10 year old boys over Xmas. Wanted to know what the best way is to see the Shark Valleya and Flamingo place. how far are they from one another, how many hours should we budget? Should we take the tours or ride bikes (we are good to do so). Also wanted to know if the airboats are worth it or just an overkill. Thanks
Written 11 November 2018
I just spent four days visiting the Everglades. It is my opinion that the southern portion, Ernest coe visitors center to flamingo is much more worth your time. Shark Valley was nice for the day that I visited but very limited and expensive if you have a family. Luckily I was solo but you are looking at the $25 entrance fee plus the cost to either rent bikes ($27 per person if you spend the average 3 hours making the loop) or $25 per person for the team tour. Without doing either of these activities you are very limited to the visitors center. If you spend your time in the southern portion of the Everglades, you can see more diverse wildlife, salt and freshwater creatures. You have many many trail options, and many more ranger led programs. Shark valley was worth a day trip but my recommendation is to plan to spend most of your time in the southern glades.

Hi! How much time to you recommend for families visiting Shark Valley? So far we are planning to visit Shark Valley for the day on our drive from Miami to Fort Myers..
Also, what would be realistic to do there with a baby (10 months), a 4 yr old and a 7 yr old? They don't get bored easily and will find the gators very exciting to see. Tram, hike or airboat? We can't go on bikes with the baby (he will be in a stroller).
Also how long ahead does the tram or airboat need to booked?
Written 13 August 2018
We rode our bicycles and spent about half a day there--but we're two adults who read every sign.. There's a small museum at the entrance. Shouldn't take more than an hour to go through it. There's a ranger talk before getting on the trams. Trams take you to a viewing platform at the far end of the loop. Beyond that, there's not much to do in the park. I'm not familiar with the airboat operations. Airboats would be outside the park entrance. So for a family with your kids, I'd expect maybe 2-3 hours? I think the loop was around 20 miles, but there were plenty of gators to see. You won't need a whole day in the park, but take the tram...not really a good location for walking with small kids, in my opinion. Out on 41, there will be some airboat operations...again-I have no experience with them--hope this helps.
