- roadtrip_ken_2017Oakland, California436 contributionsA nice short drive from the main roadThe side trip from the main road to Badwater along Artist's Drive is a nice and fairly short diversion. Of course the highlight is Artist's Palette, which will only take a few minutes to view, and you can see it right from the parking area just off the road. The rest of the drive is pleasant and occasionally quite interesting as it goes through some of the tighter spots in this badlands area.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 1 January 2024
- Vork TravelSaint Louis, Missouri337 contributionsSo unique and fun hiking! This was one of our favorite parts of Death Valley. The colors are varied and unlike anything else. As a note, there is a parking lot. You may initially see cars parked along the road, but I would suggest going to the parking lot. If you are able to, it is well worth it to go explore around once you are here. Some of the paths are steep and challenging, but there are some easier paths too.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2024
- Grover RPensacola, Florida22,266 contributionsIncredible Colors in the DirtAs I said in another review, Death Valley has the most amazing and geographic oddities and attractions of any place in the world. However, nowhere have I ever seen a place where the ground has such a diversity of color within such a confined space. Artist Drive is one of the premier attractions and Must Do in Death Valley. However, the single place that best demonstrates the rich and diverse colors is Artist Palette. Here is such a small area the chemistry of the soil makes a tremendous difference the color from pink to green to purple to orange to brown. It truly is incredible to see, and we saw it on a cloudy day. What is equally amazing is how the colors can change so drastically with changes in the light. You can still see it on a cloudy day, but it is so much better in the sun. Still, this is simply a place you must see on any visit to DVNP.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024

Artist's Palette is an area where oxidized minerals have created amazing colorful hills. There is a small parking area along Artist's Drive, which doesn't have many other places to pull over. The hills are visible from the overlook, but we scrambled down and climbed around in the hills, there are a number of paths to get around. It's absolutely beautiful, recommend arriving early or late in the day for best lighting. A must-see if visiting Death Valley.

About 4.5 miles into the Artist's Drive loop you will reach Artist's Palette. From the parking lot several trails and walks branch out in a few directions. You can walk towards the formations to get a closer view. Or, what I did was walk up the hill kind of behind the parking lot and towards the road to get an elevated view of the formations.

That’s saying something, isn’t it??! Given the difference between reviews for the drive and the actual location, a good number of folks don’t bother to walk closer to the Artists Palette. Unpaved and with some elevation, so not recommended for all to be sure, but if you can get down there and explore around a bit, what a fun spot for a brief stop, hike and photo-op. The colors are fantastic and if it was the most memorable spot for my 17 year old, well, it must be good!

It was cool, don't get me wrong. But as I put in my review of Artists Drive, during the day we visited the drive was more entertaining than the actual vantage point. I have seen, photos, however, and know how beautiful it can be. Maybe next time we will go for sunset.

We packed in a huge amount of sightseeing in a 2 day trip. I made hubby stop here as we were on the Artists Drive.
The parking lot was fairly tight and I guess we pretty much could view from the car. But, if you want a little break and need a bathroom, this is a nice place to do it

My son and I drove out to Artist's Palette on our visit to Death Valley. Artist's Palette is an area in Death Valley where the mountain side is many different colors. The colors are created by the various minerals that are in the sands and rocks. Most photos don't quite capture the colors. Seeing them in person helped me to see how many different colors were there. It is a very beautiful place and it is easy to visit in Death Valley.

Recommend taking this one way loop. The various colors of the rocks are quite impressive. The park was surprisingly busy between Christmas and New Years, so the stops in Death Valley were crowded. But the whole park is amazing.

Most pictures of this place are saturated and the colors on the hills are very much intensified. I don't say that this is an ugly place, or the place that's not worthy your visit, but don't have high expectations, not to be disappointed. I liked Zabriskie point a bit more.
What I enjoyed the most about this place is the Artist Drive that leads to the Artists Palette. Just be careful - the road is a one way road. A lot of drivers either ignore this fact or they probably just don't notice the sign. Don't be one of them.

Is there a way to see Artist's Palette from a different place than taking Artist's Drive? Apparently Artist's Drive is closed for a couple of months, and I really wanted to see the Palette.

I am not sure why Artists Drive is closed, the road seemed perfect to me. You can pull off to the side of the main road and walk to the area......once there, walk up to the ridge, you can look all over the Palette from up there......take plenty of water if you are walking!
