- David H36 contributionsSpectacular!Spectacular! Certainly the one place to visit if you are limited on time. Easy drive from the main road although a little steep near the end leading to the parking lot. We were blessed to visit on a clear day with views of the entire valley and the rare re-appearance of Lake Manly. I read prior to visiting that it's disputed whether you can view Mt. Whitney. I brought 12x30 binoculars (recommended) and was able to view the snowcapped peaks in the Sierra Nevada by looking across the saddle between Wildrose Peak and Aguereberry Point (about 30 degrees to the right of Telescope peak directly across from Dante's). After looking at google earth my guess is I was actually viewing Lone Pine Peak, or a similar peak nearby, in the foreground in front of Mt. Whitney. With more powerful binoculars and clear conditions I think it likely you could view Mt. Whitney.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 April 2024

It was in the high 90'sF. down on the flats, but as we drove around and up to Dantes View, the car's outside temperature gauge kept dropping, going down to a comfortable 68 degrees on this day in late April. There were plenty of wildflowers and birds around. Be sure to bring binoculars. This also would be a great place for star gazing, as many other places had too much light from cars.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 May 2024
- Grover RPensacola, Florida22,266 contributionsThe Best Mountain View in Any Desert National ParkOne of the best things to do in a desert National Park is take in the incredible view from the mountains. Whether on the South Rim of the Chisos in Big Bend, on top of Mount Lemmon overlooking Saguaro NP and the Sonoran Desert, on the Top of Texas looking across the Chihuahuan Desert at Guadalupe Peak in the Guadalupe Mountains NP or atop Ryan Mountain overlooking Joshua Tree NP and the Mojave, the views from a mountain top of the desert are simply amazing, and for me, Dante's View in Death Valley NP is the best. It is simply that incredible Today there is a better parking lot and viewing platform compared to my visit 12 years ago. However, the best way to see the valley is to either hike up or down a short distance to the rocks which provide an incredible setting for pictures. Twelve years ago, our family hiked down so this time with friends we hiked up. Here it is amazing to stand on the rocks a mile above the lowest place in North America and see the valley. As with Badwater, we were treated to the lake which is still there from the fall and winter rain. The views are so crisp here with no humidity the day we visited. While we went to Zabriskie Point to see the sunrise, a lot of people come here and I can fully understand why. It is simply incredible and maybe the best desert view in the entire park serviceVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024
- KentwoolgarBrighton, United Kingdom266 contributionsMos Eisley overlookWithout doubt, the best view in Death Valley. Better than Zabriskie Point IMHO. An easy drive and a short walk takes you up to a breathtaking view over Badwater Basin salt flats. If you drop any parts of your trip. Make sure it’s not this one. For Star Wars fans, this was the Mos Eisley overlook.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2024

Once in a lifetime pictures. The National Parks in USA are brilliant: download their app. Death Valley is great. We didn’t have time to stay in the resort here but wish we had factored it in because it looked great.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 September 2024

We left Vegas around 8:00am and were back in time for dinner. We didn’t do a lot of hiking in Death Valley but enjoyed the Scenery and the stops. We drove there on NV160 through Pahrump. We returned via Beatty on US95. We followed day 1 of the itinerary laid out by earthtrekkers blog including swapping the last hike they did for the Sand Dunes.
Dante’s View was our first stop. It's beautiful and gives you a great overview of where you will be visiting later in the day. Make sure you leave the viewing platform and venture out to left. The views are stunning. We visited Death Valley on a beautiful Friday in February. I did need to put my sweater on up here as it was windy in the morning. We spent maybe 30 - 45 minutes at this stop.

Dante's view at 5,476 feet high above the Badwater Basin is just 16 miles south of Furnace Creek Visitor center. After an 1 hour and 45 minute drive from Las Vegas, I finally arrived at Dante's View named after the Dante Alighieri who famously wrote "Divina Commedia".
The road from Furnace Creek is paved as is the pull-out for Dante's View. Once at the pull-out there are trail options. One option leads you to the brink of the edge of the terrace with dramatic panoramic views and the other leads to 350 yard walk to a rest area with picnic tables.. Morning is a good time to visit with the volcanic formed Black Mountains are cast in a photographic light. In the summer temperatures can be in the 90's at 10 am and 100 + on the Badwater basin floor which is 282' below sea level.. Winter can be very cold and windy. Spring and Fall are the ideal times to visit Death Valley.
Dante's View was the film location for the 1977 "Star Wrs" movie. The scene shot here was when the characters in the movie overlooked the fictional Tatoonie spaceport of Mos Eisley which was projected in the background.

High atop Dante's View above Death Valley you will see what I can only describe as breathtaking, spectacular views. This is a MUST drive that is about located above Badwater Basin, looking out over all of Death Valley, into Panamint Valley and on the clearest of days you will see Mount Whitney - WOW just WOW beautiful!
Making the drive 16 miles south of Furnace Creek was well worth it, with even getting a reprieve in temperature from the valley floor in Death Valley, seeing a significant drop of 10 to 20 degrees. On the particular day we went we even had wind gusts of upwards of 40 mph that had us cautious of getting close to the edge.
Grab your binoculars to spot out different places at 5575 feet above it all - you will want to photograph your smiling faces with the colors of the desert landscape below and the panaromic views all around. Well worth IT!!

We went in July 2020 around 8am.
Dante’s view is amazing and provides one of the best views of Badwater basin. It should be the first stop if you enter the park through Death Valley Junction.
On the other hand beware of bees !! There were plenty of them at the Dante’s view and after we parked our car, lots of then managed to get inside our car through the A/C and the windows (they were attracted by the smell of the A/C and the freshness inside of the car) !
It was a nightmare to get rid of them...

The breath taking view of the bad-water basin from this height is an experience worth having. We reached there in the afternoon and it was a good sunny day. This makes the salt deposits shine more and generate even better view. Consider visiting this place for sunset. (Its the death valley at its best)

Although beautiful, I believe sunrise would be better lighting. Bring a jacket to the viewpoint, even if daytime temps are warm. As soon as that sun sets, the temp drops and the wind blows.

Death Valley is an incredible place and the drive to Dante’s View is worth it. It is about 13 miles off the main road but is a regular paved road. The last quarter mile is steep but not a problem in the car. Long vehicles are not allowed all the way up. This view up here looking over Death Valley is spectacular! The winds are stronger up there and the temps are about 10 to 15 degrees cooler. Highly recommend this stop!

We drove up to Dante's View when we visited Death Valley. My son and I enjoyed the drive. It does take some time because it is a winding road, and near the top it gets pretty steep. I think it is about a 15% grade right at the top near the parking lot. We visited in May and the temperature in the valley was about 75 degrees. The temperature at Dante's View was about 53 degrees so there was more than a 20 degree difference. The elevation at Dante's View is more than 5,000 feet above the valley floor and the views are spectacular. You can look down on the salt flats and see peaks on the other side of the valley.
Also a note that this is a basic location that a scene from Star Wars: A New Hope was filmed. The scene where Obi Wan, Luke, and the droids look down on Mos Eisley Space Port. If you are a fan of the movies you will find the view familiar.
I highly recommend taking the time to drive up and see the beautiful views from Dante's View.

Was there mid-morning with the sun shining West toward Badwater Basin and beyond, and a clear day. Spectacular view, and as many reviewers have commented, a great experience at different times of the day or night. There is an interesting relief map in bronze or some other type of metal that shows where the overlook is and the orientation to Badwater Basin below.

Bonjour, j'aimerais aller à Dante's View mais je souffre de vertige. J'ai lu que la route est sinueuse, mais y a t il des précipices sur les côtés de la route ou le vide n'est il visible que du sommet et pas de la route ? Merci

My family is going to visit Death valley in two days so I need a fast answer please!
It'll be one day trip from Las Vegas.
I'm thinking visiting several points to visit in this order;
Vegas-Mesquite flat sand dune-Furnace creek-Bad water basin-Artists palette-Zabraskie point-Dante's view-Vegas
or opposite order
Vegas-Dante's view-Zabraskie point-Badwater-Artists palette-Furnace Creek-Mesquite sand-Vegas
If we visit all these points, it might be so late to go back to Vegas. I heard driving back to Vegas in night is pretty scary because it's too dark.
I don't think we can leave Vegas very early in the morning because my family members can't wake up early.
If we have to take out some point from the plan above, which one should we give up?
Also, is there any hard spot to walk in these point? One of my family has leg problem.
Any other suggestion?
Thank you so much in advance!!!
Written 25 December 2018
i suggest to go with order where Dante's view at last ,if you can reach that point by Sunset, after watching sunset you can drive back to Vegas but this schedule is very aggressive and possible if you start early and reach Death valley by 10 AM max.
Keep lots of food +water with you and don't forget to refuel your vehicle at Furnace Creek

We are not physically fit, are the trails to the lookout easy, moderate or difficult? Are there places to sit at the lookout?
Written 10 October 2018
The parking lot is adjacent to the viewing point. The lot was not full when I was there, so it was easy to pull up next to the main sign/diorama of the valley and walk 15 feet (5 meters) to the railing at the lookout point.

Hi, how long does it takes to hike there? We planned to go a Dante's view May 7
Thanks!

I’m planning to visit on 5/3, is Dante’s View open by then? Is it only closed for car access? Can we walk up there?
Written 14 April 2018
I wouldn't walk so long (it requires quite an amount of water to drink per head) that it can be painful. Normally the road is blocked because of storms meaning you can face one of them while hiking and there is not too much where to hide

Hi! We are planning to drive thru Death Valley NP in July. I was wondering how far of a walk/hike is it to the actual overlook from the parking lot. I know it should be cooler at Dante's View, but with the summer temps we are trying to keep our stops to things that can be seen with only a very short walk. Thanks for any help you can give.
Written 18 February 2018
Hi! We did not hike up the small peak to the actual overlook. We went in December and it was windy and very cold. We just parked at the parking lot and just walked around and felt it was good enough. You do get a good view of the whole area below from the parking lot.

I looked at Google Maps using McCarran Airport as a starting point going via highway 160/190 Thru death valley junction and back is estimated to be 5.5 Hours (293 Miles).
This way you would see Dantes first on the left side (about 120 miles) - Dantes Parking lot is also the view area.
Going back go left to Zabriske Point and left into the parking lot. Park and then walk up the hill to the viewing area.
When leaging also go left down to the Badwater Turn on the left. This will be neart the Furnace Creek Inn. About 20 miles and the parking will be on the right. You can walk out into the
No time has been given for stopping, walking or looking.
Make sure you have plenty of Gas for the car. The only gas in this part of death valley is at Furnace Creek

When you drive into Death Valley, you have to purchase a pass at a station. Pick up a magazine, and inside is a great map. As you drive along the entrance road there are several sites you can stop off at. Choose or not to choose to get out of your car. You can really get the idea of the landscape from the car if your time is limited. I highly encourage you to make your way to Mesquite Sand Dunes for morning sunrise pictures on the sand dunes. We were at the dunes around 9am and took amazing pictures. On the way there are several stops, it will be obvious.
If you are hungry, we preferred food at Stovepipe Wells over Furnace Creek. (The Mesquite Sand Dunes are near Stovepipe.) There are gas stations at both Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells.
Death Valley is amazing, the landscape/topography changes as you drive. The map is easy to read, and the sites obvious. From the dunes you can drive back to the salt flats. On the way is Devil's Golf Course and Artist's Palette. These are 3 sites kind of clustered together.
In another direction and absolutely amazing is Ubehebe Crater. Breathtaking and quite frankly bizarre. It is about ?45 minutes to 1 hour? from Stovepipe Wells. Ubehebe Crater is on the way to Scotty's Castle. The road signs are misleading. Scotty's Castle is closed but the road is not.) We divided our visit in 2 days. We did the sites that lead to Artist Palette in the first afternoon. The dunes/crater/Racetrack the following day.
(Do not do Racetrack unless you are prepared with a 4X4 trust worthy car, food, water and time. The road is rough, deserted, and since I am a planner, you should be prepared for a break down.)
A highlight of our trip was the dunes. So, I am using the dunes as a 'center' and site viewing choices from this center. (Also, get there early for sunrise pictures that emphasize the shadows.)
Have fun! Map is easy to read! I wish I could tell you which direction to go in. But, I can tell you your pictures will be phenomenal! P.S. Dante's View is closer to the entrance on the main road as you drive from Vegas. And, most importantly, buy water/snacks/food on your drive prior to entering Death Valley.
