All the viewpoints on the South Rim are very easily accessed from the road and a short walk. You access the East Portal Road just beyond the visitor checkpoint. It’s going to take over an hour to drive down and back up the steep, windy...More

Based on good reviews here, we drove down to the bottom. You can see the river and cliffs there. For some reason, I was not impressed. The views along the south rim was much better in my opinion. If time is limited, I would skip...More

Took a walk on the river at the bottom of the road, beautiful and calming. Drive a bit more at bottom of canyon and see power dam.

Pretty exciting drive down to the river, do not get in hurry going this road. Theres not many guard rails to keep you from plummeting to the bottom. Beautiful views and interesting geology.

We live in the NC mountains, but this was still an exciting drive. It was interesting to be able to get down to the river we had looked at from above.

It’s hard to get a good idea of just how deep the canyon is from the rim. If you have time drive to the bottom. There is a picnic area down there and you can eat by the river. You can also get some great...More

It felt unbelievable that there could be a road that allows visitors to drive to the bottom of the canyon, but it actually exists. It's a steep, winding, paved drive -- worth the wear and tear on the brakes.

This drive down to the bottom of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison was a twisting, turning drive full of amazing views. When we pulled up at the ranger station to show our annual park pass, the lady there was very friendly and told us...More
