The drive down to the river is steep. Make sure you use low gear on the way down. It gets you to the river by Crystal Dam. The view from the bottom in this section is not dramatic but if you have an hour or two to spare, it's worth the drive down.

One of the rewards for making the steep and windy drive down the canyon wall is seeing the place where water is diverted through the canyon wall and into the farm and ranch land for irrigation. Good signage here to explain; more at the visitor's center. It's cool and peaceful down at the water's edge; quite a change from the... More

We were on a bus tour and visited Black Canyon of the Gunnison Natl Park. It was pretty, but hard to imagine the complete idea because you saw such a small area of the canyon.

Great "diversion " from the routine sights at the National Parks System....Shows what good fortune the folks in western Colorado and points south had when they went ahead & built the water tunnell !

Seeing the dam is your reward for having driven down the very long and steep road to get to it. The area is so calm and peaceful and lacking in people. After being to the Big 5, we cherished the experience of the dam with it's quiet beauty and tranquility. We were there all alone and enjoyed the solitude. There... More

It's quite a drive down from the top to the river. Make sure you have good tires and brakes. By the time we got to the bottom and parked by the picnic tables we had to put the hood of our car up and wait for the smell of rubber and smoke to stop. But it was worth it. Pack... More

Don't get too close to the west side road, but look carefully. The water flow is beautiful. Looking East, the Blue Mesa Reservoir goes forever

Take the time to read about the dam/tunnel and the water flow to the farmer's in Gunnison. What an amazing engineering project, and the fact that they drain the tunnel every winter for inspection and repair amazed me. Remember the road is closed in the winter, so time your visit in the summer to enjoy this site.

A nice cool resting area 5 miles down from the Visitor Center along side the river. Picnic shelters and grills available and great to keep out of the hot sun.
