Another Spectacular View

Spectacular views of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Plenty of opportunity to pull over and park in parking lots that are scattered throughout the park.

Before we visited The Black Canyon, a friend advised, "don't lean over too far!". We thought he was joking! The canyon offers breathtaking views and leaves you in awe of this planet on which we live.

This si the first overlook on the drive round the South Rim. You come to it before the visitors centre, so if you want to just stand and marvel at the majesty of this canyon before you learn more, make this stop first and then drive on,

Stop here too as you continue on the rim drive. The scenes will likely make you say "Wow!" Enjoy the views and geology of the canyon from here.

This is the first chance you have to look down into the canyon, after you pay your money (or flash your lifetime pass) at the entry station. It's a stunning first look... the viewpoints just keep getting better and better... keep going, and don't forget to stop at the visitor's center!

This is the first pull-out after the entry booth and before the Visitor Center and is a grand first preview of the huge, deep canyon. Awesome and stunning that such a deep canyon "jumps" out at you.

The Grand Canyon is VAST, so is Black Canyon but much less so. If you've been to the Grand Canyon, Tomichi Point has a similar feel but it's less deep, less wide, less long...still gorgeous. I was struck by how Tomichi Point is like looking down into one of the canyons in Cahors, France. If you've been there, you'll see... More

We live in Montrose, therefore, go to The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park quite often. It never gets old. On a clear day you can see Tomichi Dome which is a mountain east and, we think the point is named after this mountain.. The lookout at Tomichi Point has a walking path that is worth an extra few... This is one of my favorite views in the US. The canyon is absolutely breathtaking and I especially like the view from Tomichi Point. You can see the lake and also see the river below in the canyon.
