Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This cannot compare to the views of Tiger Leaping Gorge (non-touristy bits), but still worth a visit if you like hiking. It is a 1.5 hour drive from Lijiang and near the Shaxi Old Town. You pay an entry fee (approx. 50 kuai) to get in, and then a further fee (approx. another 30RMB) for the shuttle bus to get around the place. The area is split up into 3 main sections, the Baoxiang Temple (宝相寺)around 2km from the entrance, the Shilong reservoir (石龙水库)another 2km on and the Shizhong Temple/Shizhongshan Grottoes (石钟山石窟) another 10km in. All are worth visiting, and you can do some decent hiking around the Shizhong Temple. Food options within the mountain area are very limited, so best to eat a good meal beforehand.

We visited this place en route from Lijiang to Shaxi with a private driver and are so glad we did. The scenery was spectacular. The nicest thing of all was that there were barely any other people! Our driver took us to Baoxiang Temple first (a spectacular sight!), then to Shizhong Temple and from there we walked downhill for about 1.5 hours towards Shaxi (a very easy and peaceful walk with great views over the valley), but were picked up at a parking lot and driven the rest of the way. I recommend a visit with a driver in this order (apparently it's 180RMB for the driver from Shaxi, well worth it). If you walk to Shibaoshan all the way from Shaxi it's all uphill and once you get to the parking lot of Shizhong Temple there are still many steps ahead of you to the actual temple and Baoxiang is also still very very far away (not sure if it's actually doable by foot). Our guesthouse in Shaxi organised this trip for us. A very memorable day trip!

The guest house we were staying at gave my partner and I some general directions to get to The Shibaoshan Temples as well as a fairly lacklustre map. On their advice we decided to go it alone and hike up. Even whilst cycling to the foot of the mountain, it was fairly arduous. We took the shortcut over the mountain which cut down on distance but was pretty strenuous. Ultimately, we ended up spending a lot of the day trying to pin down where we should be, rather than actually seeing the grottos etc. In hindsight, we should have taken a car up to the top and gone with a guide back down to Shaxi.

This site is on the way to Shaxi Ancient Town, just a couple of miles off the main road. Going up the mountain requires using mini buses and the ride to the top is very pleasant. There is a very scenic trail. This can be a short visit or a day trip, depending how much you wish to walk and climb. Monkeys included.

Beautiful place with wonderful historical and cultural heritages, but not well preserved nor well introduced to tourists. Crazy monkeys will become problem in future.

Our Yangtze River cruise stopped here for our tour of the Shibaozhai Fortress. It was a nice walk to the fortress but was very interesting. We learned quite a bit about the Yangtze and its construction role on the Three Gorges Dam. Many in the group climbed to the top of the 12 story Pagoda.

The Fortress walls were built to preserve the Pagoda from flooding with the construction of the dam.

Quite interesting.

It is reached by taxi. You pay a tax on entering the park, unless you are over 70 when it is free and pay 50 yuan for the bus to the temples and back. We only paid 20 yuan as we only wanted to go one way. Before getting on the bus you should first visit the nearby temple. The first set of temples was closed due to restoration. It did not bother us much as the second set of temples, some of which were set into the mountainside were interesting enough and we were keen to do the one and a half hour walk down towards Shaxi town with good views. We had arranged to be picked up at the bottom of the walk and driven to town for lunch.

A day trip to Shibao mountain offers sights for everyone. This includes friendly wild monkeys, buddhist grottoes full of interesting carvings, stunning temples, and great hiking paths.

The ideal way to visit is the followining:
1) find a ride to the visitors station.
2) from there, take a shuttle bus to Baoxiang Temple (cliff temples + monkeys).
3) grab lunch at the parking lot, then take another shuttle bus to see the Grottoes.
4) hike all the way down to shaxi valley (~3 hours). The hike down is well paved, offers fantastic views of the shaxi valley, and passes by a few more carvings. At the end of the hike, you'll find a concrete road which leads to the main highway.

An alternative plan is to bike to the trailhead, hike up, visit the temples, then hike back down. It can be done if you are reasonably fit and used to the elevation, but you will be very tired at the end of the day.

If you are visiting Shaxi, this complex is possibly worth considering the detour. It lies along the road to/from Shaxi from Jianchuan. We were traveling to Shaxi by private car, and paid the driver extra 100RMB to stop by and wait for us while we toured the complex for a couple of hours. The entry fee for the complex was 65RMB/ppl (half off for students/children, free for toddler/babies), but you will need to pay additional 40RMB/ppl (no discount for children, free for toddler) for the shuttle bus (it’s a very long walk, otherwise).

The complex consists of two primary areas: Baoxiang Temple and ShiZhong Temple. We didn’t take the time to visit the Baoxiang Temple area, except to see the monkeys. They are wild monkeys that have gotten used to tourists and locals feeding them. ShiZong Temple is the one built into the rocks. It requires a short, but steep hike to visit. They do not allow photography of the ancient artifacts and a friendly security guard stayed near us at all times. Oddly, free-wifi was available at the temple. We encountered a good-sized snake on the trail back to the bus stop - so take care! We kept our stay relatively short, but with more time, additional scenic and beautiful spots could have been visited.

Shibaoshan is a must stop when visiting Shaxi. Baoxiang temple is magificent and I recommend to hike back to Shaxi from Shizhong temple (2.5 hours). The monkeys were not agressive as some other reviews noted. Do go!
