The area
Neighbourhood: Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

The Granny's Harajuku
Oct. 2019
It is located very near to JR Sugamo station. Turn left after leaving Sugamo station, go straight then pass the first seen pedestrian bridge, you are at the Jizo-dori shopping street. This street is quieter than Harajuku for sure and a lot of goods is for elderly. There are Shinshoji and Koganji temples next to the street. One type of the famous goods in the street is red underwear. Food and coffee are available. It is worth visit this place.

Ok if you are in the neighborhood
Jun. 2019 • Couples
Typical shopping street in Tokyo although this one is famous for having lots of old people shopping. Also lots of red underwear so if you are looking for that, this is the place (apparently red underwear is supposed to make you rich). Very small temple at one end of the street and from what I have been told, this street is on the route that the Shoguns took to come to Edo.

Not just for “old people”!
Mar. 2019
Sugamo has a reputation of being “old people’s Harajuku” — while I wouldn’t disagree per se, it’s definitely not just for old people. When I visited, I saw a whole spectrum of age groups including young mothers with their toddlers and students in uniform all enjoying the festival atmosphere, the friendly shopkeepers, and the affordable & yummy food, and even the bargain-hunting at the flea market-like stalls. As some other reviewers have said, I would definitely recommend visiting Sugamo on a “day of 4” as one shopkeeper called it: the 4th, 14th, and 24th of the month, because this is when the street is at its liveliest and you will be able to enjoy street vendors (both food and non-food) that only come by during these days. Having said that, I recommend saving stomach space to visit Tokiwa Shokudo (ときわ食堂), which you will most easily spot by the queue forming out the door. It’s an old-fashioned diner so don’t expect luxury dining, but it gives excellent home-style Japanese food at a great price for the quantity and quality. Go for the “kaki fry” (breaded oysters), you won’t regret it!

Festival day
Oct. 2018 • Friends
I’ve been to the shopping street on a normal day when it’s fairly quiet.
On the 4,14,24th of month it’s a festival day and more stalls are on the street selling snacks. The area caters for the elderly. There are shops selling honey, black garlic and sesame ice cream. There are some nice clothing shops for the elderly also.
Nice area to spend a few hours wandering around.
Sugamo is 2 train stops from Ikebukuro on Yamanote line.

Hasn't Changed in 25 Years ! Visit on a 4-Day for the True Experience
Apr. 2018 • Couples
I lived in Nishi Sugamo for 5 years in the 1990s and walked down Jizo-dori many, many times. Known as Oba-chan no Harajuku, this for me is the true Japan. Line up to wash Jizo-san, smell the aromas of green tea being roasted, eat some yaki-tori or okanomiyaki and shop in the many great value stores and stalls along the street. Visit on a 4-day to get the true, though busy, experience.

Interesting mix of small shops
Jan. 2018 • Solo
I visited the street mid-afternoon and there were a lot of children in this shopping mall. It is a good street for mothers with small children as there are no vehicles. I was expecting a heritage appearance but it is similar to other shopping streets. I did notice some older shop keepers. Most of the shops were very neat and attractive and the shop staff very polite. I havent seen that level of courtesy in the larger shops in Tokyo. There is a small shrine half way along the mall which is worth a visit.

If you need small-sized shoes ...
Oct. 2017 • Solo
My mom has super small feet, and has trouble buying shoes in most countries. We are talking about kid-sized sneakers type of small.

Even in Japan, where small sizes are available, she can't find her size everywhere. Department stores, for example, usually start from 22cm or 22.5.

But this shopping street is her shoe paradise! We visited two stores, and both had many choices of footwear starting from 21.5 or SSS!

She left there happy. And if you have such small feet, please go there ...

Oct. 2017 • Friends
quite a variety of shops and not as hectic, had a very unique fruit while I was there called Akebi.
Prices at these drug stores are actually cheaper. only 2 stops from Ikebukuro by train.
