During our first day of sightseeing in Tokyo, our guide wanted to take us to the Yanaka neighborhood, as a document of a Tokyo that was common in the past, but which today is reduced to residue; therefore all the more precious.
A Tokyo made up of streets and alleys with little traffic, silent, flanked by low houses, showing an almost rural appearance.
As the fulcrum of this neighborhood, we slowly walked (and also had lunch there) Yanaka Ginza, a rectilinear, pedestrianized street, about 200 meters long, and which conforms to the characteristics of the neighborhood already mentioned, but stands out from them because the commercial activity is pushed to the maximum level along it.
The shops are of all kinds, they are interspersed almost only with eateries. In these little shops you can find everything, and almost always at a very good price, in accordance with the village atmosphere of the neighborhood.
In a word, a delightful stroll.

this strip of walking street is a hidden gem of Taito city area . After walking through yanaka cemetery, We reached Nippori JR train station then turning right for a while. we strolled along slope down to ground, lining with handicraft shops, souvenir shops, cafe/bistro, okonomiyagi shop, food vendors, second hand clothings . it's very relaxing walking during winter.

I think it was a bustling local shopping street during the Showa era.
A new store has opened using the old store.
It feels like it has become a tourist destination now.

Maybe the locals (like my feelings towards Harmonica Yokocho)
You may think it's different from before, but
As someone who was visiting for the first time, it was quite interesting.
Maybe it's because the streets are narrow, so you can see a lot of people and it feels lively.

Personally, I am reminded of a novel written by a famous female author that is set here.
I enjoyed the stroll.

A vintage li'l town with lots of historical temples nearby. It's know as a cat town... there's a cat cafe and cat sculptures on the roofs of the shop. The snacks are cheaper than the tourist area. It's worth to discover and venture through this little town. There's a lovely shop specialising in teas... go grab the matcha, the have different grades and quality. I love their pottery cups and some are really affordable. Btw I didn't see any cats roaming about in Yanaka town. Only cat banners and decor.

Yanaka is a lovely area to take a stroll around. The Ginza shopping street itself is a small mall-free shopping districts filled with both locals and tourists. There was a stall selling cat-tail shaped little cakes - and it was probably the nicest I've had anywhere. I wouldn't recommend anyone go out of their way to come here specially but if you are in Yanaka then go and have a stroll.

Tokyo is always changing. Even the Tsukiji fish market will have gone by 2030. But Yanaka Ginza still exists. Japanese used to go shopping on shotengai which means shopping streets. Due to redevelopment, many department stores and shopping malls have been built. Most of the shotengai have shut down. People can enjoy the Showa-era atmosphere here in Yanaka.

Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street
Walking down Gotenzaka from the north exit of JR Nippori Station, you can see the arcade of Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street from the popular sunset viewing spot Yuyake Dandan🌇🌅 (⦿ᴗ⦿)
It looks like an old, rundown shopping street, but it also has a different Japanese scenery that is attractive🇯🇵
It seems to be popular with foreign tourists
I also walked around...
So...??
It was a mediocre shopping street
It's hard to deny that it's a bit of a hot topic
Croquettes are sold for about 200 yen
If you buy them at a local butcher, you can eat them for about 100 yen
I won't be coming back

I had read quite a bit about Yanaka Ginza and was very keen to visit this shopping street. I lived in Tokyo for most of the 90s and had lived a short distance away in Sugamo. To put it bluntly Yanaka Ginza is very disappointing. You are far better to go to Jizo-dori in Sugamo on a 4-day (4th, 14th or 24th) of each month. Jizo-dori is so much more interesting.
I would say give Yanaka Ginza a pass.

I had a very enjoyable time taking a slow walk through this traditional shopping area. It was not too crowded on a weekday. Just standing there looking at the shops was relaxing. At the end I spent about two hours here having one purchase at a mid price brand, bought some nice green coffee beans at Yanaka Coffee and had pasta for late lunch at a cafe.

Was supposed to be a Cat-Town but the only cats we saw were fake ones ie souvenirs cats, store display cats . Not even one real cat was seen - maybe they all went to sleep in winter. This is a small short street leading to another main street. There aren't that many shops. Most shops open around 11am. The shops are nothing very extraordinary nor special. Yes, it's a nice slow moving & peaceful area to stroll around. But definitely it is not worth coming all the way here.
