Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

We had added this stop on our adventures through Yanaka. Our guide had incorporated it in our customized tour as per our request. This is not a spooky cemetery, it is full of history and beauty. It is very calming and peaceful. Having a guide to navigate was a great plus for an enriched experience. Yanaka in itself is beautiful!

On my fifth trip to Tokyo I thought to do something outside the box and headed to Yanaka Cemetery, having only visited Sydney’s Rookwood a week early, to compare.

The cemetery is a calm place. Serene, with beautiful trees and stone pathways that you can wander and take note of the various graves.

Along the way you will find a few children’s parks. There are also rest stops, old pagoda ruins and a sprinkling of shrines.

I enjoyed the sense of calm within such a complex and often noisy city

Yanaka is known for many things besides the street food and bargain buys. The famous slope to one of the cemeteries is better than most treadmills. But do be wary of one or two cafes that insists that each guest orders at least a drink, and it costs a lot more than usual. Tourist trap?!! The street signs do tell a story, if you ask.

I didn't perceive the Yanaka Cemetery as an attraction or a sight meant for tourists. It had a sad vibe and I felt like I was intruding, while people visited the graves.

Accessible right off the Nippori station it will take you to anothe world. The alleys are lines up with mature trees, the tombstones are all kept in perfect conditions, many if not most plots have plants shrubs giving the impression that you walk through a garden. We were there the last week of march 2017, the sakura were starting to bloom. You should get a map/plan before going in order to fully appreciate the site. The cemetery has a tremendous historical value. Don t forget to visit the temple when entering the site. Be respectful, do not talk loud, touch the stones.
Take time to rest... This is not a race... so quiet so pretty... so simple...

It's a bit out of the way, but very much worth the walk, even in 35+ degrees. It was nearly deserted when we visited, which gave it all a bit more atmosphere. The grave of the last shogun was nice, but the other graves are also very interesting to behold. On the way there's a few European influences, a real neighbourhood feel and another very small cemetery that's worth a stop.

Beautiful Yanaka off the beaten path. The cemetery is spectacular, secluded, silent, peaceful, only populated by a bunch of crows, which give it a perfect atmosphere. We discovered that right outside one of the gates of the cemetery there is a tour bus that travels through Yanaka leaving us just off from Yanaka Ginza street. The same bus takes in the Asakusa area all the way to the river.

A relatively short walk from Ueno Park (maybe 20 minutes) the Yanaka Cemetery is a peaceful and interesting place to visit. There are boards up with maps to help find your way around, public toilets, and 2 small children’s play areas. Take insect repellent because there are mosquitoes (at least in September). Plenty of fresh flowers on graves and incense burning. Close to JR Nippori Station. We were there for around 1 hour.

I study tombs and love stopping by cemeteries when I travel. Yanaka was definitely not disappointing, and I'm sure it will be even more beautiful in a week or two when the cherry blossoms are out. The monuments were lovely and the cemetery itself was HUGE. There were many neat little shrines and temples in the surrounding neighborhood. The only downside was the ravens, which are huge and a bit threatening. If my translation app was correct, there were even signs in the cemetery warning not to drop stray cats there, since the ravens will kill them!

When talking about having a pleasant walk the first think that will come to mind is probably a park and not a cemetery. Still, the Yanaka Cemetery should definitely be on your bucket list if you're looking for an atmospheric afternoon stroll.
Its historical value, peaceful silence and feline inhabitants all add to the cemetery's charm. We'd recommend coming in Spring to enjoy some Sakura at the same time.

But please do keep in mind to be respectful when you're on the cemetery grounds.
