Neighbourhood: Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.

Atsushi-sensei leads the class through trying out calligraphy. He was very helpful and communicative leading up to the event. During class he gives plenty of advice both verbally and by demonstrating the various steps and points to help you do your best at it.
I got to try many kanji and chose one to practice and do final piece for a wonderful souvenir to bring back home and show people.
I really enjoyed the lesson and recommend it to anyone who wants to experience writing calligraphy.

I attended this class with my husband and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience Japanese culture in a beautiful art form.

The teacher was very knowledgeable and showed us great patience and kindness throughout. We both left the class happy and satisfied that we had achieved something and had a wonderful memory in Japan that we will treasure.

We also left with our practice papers and our chosen character on a presentation card to keep as a memento.

10/10 - definitely recommended

My 15 year old grandson and I were very excited to have this private 90 minute class. However, the teacher was quite unpleasant and we had the feeling all the time that he just wanted it to be over. We didn't actually learn anything because we were a bit slow and the teacher (Atsushi Miyazaki) just wanted to go through the motions and finish the lesson. He has to teach you certain things and it doesn't matter if you actually manage to do them or not.

Thank you for your honest feedback. I try my very best to tailor towards every individual’s needs and I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy my lesson. My mission in establishing my school is to share my passion for Japanese Calligraphy and ignite that same passion in my students. If you’d like, I can offer you a refund. Safe travels back to Israel and it was nice to meet you both! Miyazaki

This is one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in Tokyo. Definitely give this a try if you’re intrigued by Asian culture, or simply a fan of the arts. The teacher is patient, and has such a beautiful calligraphy style to learn from. In just a short 1.5 hour, he taught me how to build my characters better and how to make each stroke of the character connect. Love this class so much and will definitely be coming back in my next trip to Tokyo. Thank you so much for the wonderful, enjoyable experience!!

We booked this private class last minute. Atsushi was quickly to schedule and confirm. He provided directions but allow yourself time to find the building because it’s tucked away from the main streets of a rather busy area.

The class was 90 minutes and Atsushi is a gifted instructor - kind, patient, and soft spoken. We learned several strokes and words and had plenty of time to practice.

This is the last activity we did and I highly recommend it for older children and adults.

Great time with master Atsushi. Digital devices’ addicted will rediscover the pleasure of holding a brush, touching fine papers and smell the ink. Fans of pens, brushes and papers, will experience one of the finest calligraphy and enjoy the armony of beautiful strokes.
Then go for a course and develop your style. And if you leave your tablet and go for rice paper and ink, Atsushi will help you in finding the most convenient shops.

My son Tom 22 years old and myself mid 50's thoroughly enjoyed our calligraphy class taught by the wonderful Atsushi who was patient, kind and a very informative teacher.
Our lesson lasted for 90 mins but it went really fast and was so relaxing.
We found the studio easily by putting the directions given to us by Atsushi into our Google maps on our phone.
A good idea maybe to put a photo of the outside of the door as it is in an apartment block.
We are really happy with the work we produced and now have another wonderful memory of our trip to Japan, thank you

A friend and I spent 1.5 hrs with Atsushi and it was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. Relaxing calming and thoroughly enjoyable. Clear English instruction and very supportive to help you improve in the time in the studio. Great souvenir to take home too.
