I have been learning ikebana for some years in Australia. It was wonderful to be able to visit Sogetsu HQ and have a very instructive lesson in the well equipped classroom. The teacher was very helpful and i was pleased with the works I did under her direction.

My husband and I had a fantastic experience with the Sogetsu School. We took a private lesson and had wonderful teachers, explaining the art of flower arrangement. We produced some flower arrangements that we were proud of and also practiced writing our names in kanji. The school has a stunning setting, with a lobby full of Noguchi scultpures. I would highly recommend this school.

Sogetsu School of Ikebana's headquarters, Sogetsu Kaikan, is a stunning building. The interior "lobby" was designed by Isamu Noguchi and is a fabulous site for wonderful installations of flower art!

I've always been interested in Ikebana because it seems more technical in some ways from other regular forms of flower arrangement.

Shihou was very responsive to my emails enquiring about the class. He offered me a few different dates and times, and when we had set one he sent me the direction for our meeting point. The studio that Shihou uses in Azabu-Juban is very conveniently located near the subway station.

During our session, Shihou had another Japanese lady there to assist in some translation. (Her name escapes me now, unfortunately.) She was friendly and I think I enjoyed the class even more because she made sure nothing was lost in translation!

I had a really great time learning the basics of Ikebana. Shihou and his assistant explained everything to me, and patiently addressed any queries I had about techniques, flowers and inspirations. After the class, they offered some matcha and Japanese sweets, and we had a great time chatting about my tourist experiences in Tokyo over the years. They even offered to sell me an Ikebana "textbook" so I wouldn't have to search for it at a bookstore!

I will definitely hope to come back for another lesson!
