Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

JR Kyushu has a lot of Mitooka-designed trains running on it and it is fun to ride them. This time, I took the Hita Hikoyama Line from Ogura to Tagawa Ita. From Kokura to Beppu, use the Limited Express Sonic. Many stations do not accept transportation IC cards, and I have the impression that the number of unmanned stations is increasing. There are many events trains and other projects, and I would like to use them again.

The Kyushu Railway Company, more commonly known as JR Kyushu, operates hotels, restaurants, buses, a jetfoil service between Fukuoka and Pusan/Busan, South Korea, and intercity train service around the island of Kyushu. It operates the Shinkansen lines from Shimonoseki to Kagoshima and administers the JR Kyushu rail pass. Its home page, jrkyushu. co. jp has timetables in English, Korean, Chinese and Japanese with information on its various services. Visited on 13 April 2020.

JR Kyushu serves most of the rail service at the whole Kyushu Island. There are various theme train to serve the tourist such as Yufuin No Mori, A train and etc.
For Foreign tourist with short term visa, you may purchase JR Kyushu Pass to travel various tourist site at Kyushu. We travel recently by purchasing their JR North Kyushu 5 days pass to travel the north kyushu. It is an economic way to travel the various city in kyushu by JR Train which include the Shinkansen route between Hakata and Kumamoto. The traveling time between the 2 city is about half an hour.

The Kagoshima Main Line outbound local train I boarded at Kokura Station was completely empty as it was after rush hour. I was worried it would be crowded as the train leaving the hub station of Kitakyushu was only six cars long, but my fears were unfounded. I thought there might be a lot of people boarding heading towards Hakata Station, but it wasn't that bad and it seemed like a completely local service.
Also, the all-long-seat 415 series train, which I thought was mainly used between Kanmon, was also used for local service on the Kagoshima Main Line, and the inconsistent interior facilities were typical of local transport.

I don't think this is about Hakata station, which is worth a visit (see my review), but about the trains. Anyway, my review is about the JR trains in Japan (not just Kyushu, although I spent 9 days in Fukuoka 3 weeks ago).
If you are not Japanese (i.e. if you have a foreign passport), look into getting a JR pass while in Japan. You can get a 1, 2, or 3-week pass, which gets you onto almost any JR train, bus, or ferry (there are exceptions). You MUST purchase the pass before you get to Japan, though, so this requires research and planning.
Once you know what length of pass you want, you have to decide when to activate it, which you do by using it for the first time. You might use your 1-week pass beginning on day 3 of your trip, for example. Again, planning and research.
JR shinkansen (bullet trains) run between major cites. We took a JR shinkansen from Tokyo to Hakata station in Fukuoka, Kyushu. On other trips to Japan, we travelled to Hiroshima, Osaka, Shin-Osaka, Kumomoto using shinkansen. There are JR ferries (to the "floating shrine", for example), and one Tokyo subway line is JR (included in your JR pass). The "Narita express" train from Narita airport in Tokyo to Tokyo station is included (it's about $40 otherwise).
In Fukuoka, the airport is a quick non-JR subway ride from the city, no JR pass needed.
The JR pass is expensive at first glance, but if you're travelling around Japan it might be the smartest thing you purchase. The shinkansen are comfortable, clean, and fast, and a great way to travel. Not all are included (for example, the Nozomi shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyushu isn't included, but other trains from Tokyo to Kyushu are). The large JR ticket stations always have someone who speaks English and can help.

You will interact with JR in Hakata by taking a train or by visiting the impressive JR station in Hakata. The train service is good and typical of JR services Japan-wide. The train station is very good and one of the best as was the shopping area above. JR Kyushu was privatized in 1987 and JR Kyushu took over the operations in Kyushu and big debts. Since then it has diversified into mushroom farming and car sales . The train station is a focal point in Hakata and has a bus terminal as well. Worthy of a visit.

The regional rapid train bound for Kokura Station from Hakata Station consisted of nine cars.
Six of the vehicles were long-seated and probably crowded during the commute, but after that, the ridership was such that seats were quickly filled.
We understood that using long-seat vehicles for long-distance transportation during the day was difficult to understand and lacked passenger perspective.

I boarded a local train from Shimonoseki Station to Kokura Station, but even that station had restrictions on automatic ticket gates for IC cards in JR Kyushu, and I was amazed at how they could not be integrated despite being in the same Kitakyushu economic zone. In addition, four JNR 415 series cars were used to travel between Kanmon, and if old cars were used, that only seemed to be a problem with maintenance.

Is it worth buying a JR pass for going around Fukuoka or is it about the same to use the Sugimon IC card. We have 5 full days.
