- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, United Kingdom3,807 contributionsView is somewhat restricted at presentThe site can still be viewed from outside. Unfortunately, what is one of the key places to see around the lake is covered in scaffolding for what appears to be a major refurbishment which severely restricts sight of the detailed exterior decoration. There are still plenty of other places to visit around the lake that makes the trek worthwhile.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 November 2023
- Traveling Ammonite268 contributionsUnder construction... lovely otherwise, but not much else to do around thereDespite being disappointed that it was closed, I can't really ding this place for being under construction. It happens, and is usually for the safety and maintenance of the structure. However, considering this is quite difficult to get to, and a highlight of the area, I would have expected a little more to go into it. More signs about the area, easy places to visit, or even an easier way to get there. We kind of just walked around the lake blindly thanks to Google maps. I guess it's worth it to see once the renovations are over, but otherwise maybe wait a bit. I guess you can go jogging around the lake, but beware the mosquitoesVisited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 March 2024
- ZimminaroundtheworldOkinawa Prefecture, Japan1,973 contributionsCurrently Being Renovated, Still Worth itThe Dragon and Tiger Towers are currently being renovated, but it is still worth seeing. You can still walk inside the structures and access the bridge. The whole Lotus Pond area is neat with other sculptures and towers that you can see. I think it will open again next year, 2025.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2024

I went to the gourd pond, a popular tourist spot for Taiwanese people, by bus. Kaohsiung city buses cost 12 NT$ per trip, and 6 NT$ for seniors. I only found out about the senior discount when I took the bus for the third time, so I lost out a little. Around the pond are colorful towers and statues. There is a teahouse where you can enjoy karaoke. There is a relaxed local restaurant.

The Dragon and Tiger Towers have been a feature on travelers' itineraries for many years. The are built over water, which is said to be lucky. Many visitors are under the impression that Kaohsiung is a gritty industrial city, but there are many things to see, if you look hard, such as the delightful lotus when they bloom.

Our first stop on our private tour off the HAL Westerdam. We were early so there were not many people there yet but soon after, the other tour groups arrived and it was very crowded and hard to take photos. A fun place to visit where you can walk inside into the dragon's mouth and come out from the tiger's. Many little sculptures inside depicting punishments in hell for those who did bad things while on earth. Good place to have your Instagram moments.

I was there an hour after opening time on a Saturday, but they were still closed for the climb up the towers. I still managed to enter the animal mouths and walk around the base. The art work is nicely done with colourful painting and many bird images. It does look a bit tacky close up.

When I visited in December 2023, it was also under construction, and I could only see it from a distance because I couldn't get in. The situation was no different when I visited here and it will take a little longer to complete. For this reason, I was able to spend some time walking around the lotus pond and visiting other buildings.

The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas is Kaohsiung's major attraction. The cartoon-like statues of dragon and tiger form an impressive landscape of Lotus Pond. Unfortunately it is currently under renovation and scaffolding has covered almost everything.

When I was there in october 2023 both thr Dragon and the Tiger were undergoing maintenance. You can still go inside though. Im not that well versed in Eastern religion but inside the Dragon seems to be Buddhistic hell and inside the Tiger Heaven with the heavenly kings. Please dont take offence if I got that wrong. The murals were nice and walking into the Dragon and out of the Tiger should turn bad luck into good luck.

To enjoy the whole scenic area, we walked. The Dragon and Tiger towers were our first stop. The structures were quite large and we could enter/exit two big tiger and dragon tunnels. Inside was full of Chinese murals made of porcelain.

Hi Yss97 I am going to Taiwan next week for a month. At the end of August the southern part of the island had some extremely bad weather resulting in major flooding. They had over 1 metre of rain in a day. Can you please tell me has anything returned to normal. Many thanks for your time. Kind regards Gayle, Perth Western Australia

Is there a tour for cruise ship passengers that will meet you at the dock and rake you to Fo Guang Shan, And Lotus pond?
Written 24 July 2016
I'm sorry that I didn't see this earlier. Lotus Pond is a small recreational area with most of it's activities along the shore. There are no water tours of this pond. You can walk around the pond in about 2 hours if you don't stop but there are lots of religious areas around the pond that beds to be explored and photographed. So take your time and enjoy.
At one point of Lotus Pond is a pavilion. On my last trip there I watched the local people in search of the Pokemon Go characters during the evening from my hotel room. It was a mad house and by late in the evening or early morning the gathering had disappeared. Have fun and enjoy.

Thanks

If I am staying near Sanduo Shopping centre?
Appreciate if you can help to advice me how to travel to this places?
1) to Dragon Tiger Tower
2) from Dragon Tiger tower how do I travel to Liu ho Night Market?
Thanks
Written 31 August 2015
I would suggest that you get a taxi. The tower is not too far north of where you are staying so the fare would not be expensive. Looking at the map, it seems that you just get a taxi back, as the Liu Ho night market is not too far from where you are staying. Best wishes. James.
