My friend and I alighted at Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial MRT Station and came across this first, we didn't know what it was called but we admired the vibrant colors and intricate designs. We were fortunate to visit on a clear day, where the clouds are sparse and the background is a blue sky.

The National Theater and National Concert Hall (NTCH) in Taipei are two of the most prominent facilities for performing arts not only in Taipei but also in the whole of Asia. The National Concert Hall comprises a Recital Hall and an outdoor facility that can be used for performances. The location of the hall is on the hallowed grounds of the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial. The hall and its surroundings also houses restaurants, shops, libraries and art galleries. The performances in the hall include International symphony orchestras besides Chinese ones and choirs as well. Several performances such as chamber music, workshops, lectures and recital are held in the recital hall. The entire concert complex along with 228 Peace Memorial Park, National Taiwan Museum, the National Central Library, The National Theater and the Presidential Office Building is a part of the Taiwanese cultural and political landscape.

The National Concert Hall is on the grounds of the Chiang Kai Shek Memoral, and the National Opera House is just across the way. When I first arrived in Taiwan, this area was a good place for walking around in those eerie morning hours at which one can awaken when jet-lagged. At dawn, many older Taiwanese people are here in groups silently doing tai-chi.
I got tickets to hear a string quartet here one night, and felt like an auspicious VIP walking up to the swooping orange roof and among the magnificent red columns to go in here. Inside, you get a sense that this is a place of great national pride for the Taiwanese and that they are very cultured (which they are). It's grandiose and elegant in the way that, say, the Bolshoi Ballet is in Moscow. When you come here you get a glimpse of Taipei high society.

Our friends from Britain had a concert performance for 3 days in this hall, so we went to support them. It was an amazing experience. The building was beautiful outside and the facilities were outstanding inside! We will visit again for other performances.

I highly recommend you visit the National Concert Hall at night.
The opera is much more stunning during night than at daytime.
Most important, there are fewer visitors during night.
Enjoy it !

Taipei is a real delight if the weather plays along for a photographer, amateur or professional. The buildings are spectacular and the people are friendly. Most locals speak some English which made life easier for us as we speak no Chinese at all.

We had visited the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall and were surprised to see two similar looking buildings. At first, we thought this was the Memorial Hall but then realized that the first building from the MRT is the National Theater and the second similar looking building is the Concert Hall. I was excited because now I thought we could see a musical performance of some sort. We came right after Chinese New Year but unfortunately there weren’t any performances, sigh! The National Concert Hall is stunning. The architecture is phenomenal and there were many people surrounding the Hall. In addition there were school groups and they were in action. The students were waving flags and looking to ready themselves for a performance and we were hopeful. We inquired and it just was not to be. We even tried to enter the building to get a closer look inside the building but they wouldn’t let us in. We were still able to get some good pics of the building. When visiting Chiang Kai Shek memorial Hall stop by and take some pics of the beautiful building and hopefully there will be a performance.

I went to two concerts this week, and I was impressed with the acoustics. On Thursday, there was chamber music and on Sunday, the ESO played.
This was my first time to attend classical concerts in Asia and I noticed some differences from those I've attended in Europe and North America. There was a fairly small crowd on Thursday night, and after the concert, the audience was enthusiastic; the Oliver Schnyder trio obliged by playing three encores. Likewise at the Sunday concert , the ESO played a couple of short movements. This hardly happens in Toronto and at bigger concert halls in Europe. The young woman beside me said that they clap and clap, and the musicians play:)
The organ IS the centerpiece. The hall is spacious and the audience can enter from three sides; however, perhaps I'm not familiar with Taiwanese architecture and art, the concert hall itself didn't leave a very deep impression - no stained glass, classical columns and paintings and murals like those found in European halls. But then many of the newer concert halls in North America are also pretty nondescript.
The whole square is definitely beautiful. At the National theatre across the way, there are always dancers rehearsing. It's very pleasant to visit and walk through the park. When I went during the day, the plum trees were in bloom.
