Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Master wood carver Phet Wiriya, now in his late 60's and suffering some loss of vision, has always been fascinated by elephants, and brilliantly carves them in various lifelike positions. He tries to make use of every piece of wood, so on display is a huge sculpted woolly mammoth whose thick hair is made of wood shavings salvaged from a termite-ridden house beam. His adult daughters help run the Museum but there are no more wood sculptors to carry on his work. He invites wood artists to come observe him at no charge to learn the artistry involved. If you can't visit, some of his works are available on Etsy. ElephantsStudio

Even with their address, you won't find it on Google Map. So get their GPS coordinates and print out the map as a guide. Remember to get their phone no. too as most tuk-tuk drivers won't know where it's located.
Since it's easily 16-18 km from the city, you may want to visit this museum together with a trip to Bor Sang Handicraft Centre, which is also out of town.
This is more a workshop rather than a museum. Here you'll see the people working on those cement figurines and woodcarvings of elephants. There are lots of carvings and handicrafts, mostly of elephants, on display.

I'll warn you upfront that you'll need some wheels to get here - local tuk-tuk drivers are highly unlikely to know where this is. That said, you'll be one of the few tourists that make it to this excellent day-trip from Chiang Mai

Started 40 years ago in the middle of nowhere, Ban Jang Nak (literally means “house with lots of elephants)’ is a work-shop-cum-museum full of exquisitely carved is legitimate workspace first and space for beloved elephants second. The wood used here is teak or khi lek, from the kassod tree. Some of the larger sculptures take up to 4 years to make, and can cost a million baht (over $30,000 USD).

This area is great for kids, especially for the dinosaurs that might be around. Apparently, they also carve dinos as well as elephants.

My husband came across this after doing a Google search. Our tour operator and guide were not familiar with it so we had to ask to be taken. Our guide got out of the car and was taking as many photos as we were he was that impressed. We went on the 16th of April so we didn't see any carvers at work as they were on holidays, but we met the owner and his daughter who gave us a little look around. Check this place out as it is definitely worth it.

Our last terrifying adventure, aboard the piece of crap rental scooter that is now history, fortunately led us to a very cool Wood Carving Museum. (We recently purchased a 2016 Honda PCX150...so we happy now!)

This place "Baan Jang Nak" is a bit out of the way, meaning you need to be a little adventurous to find it in the first place. We managed to locate this wonderful spot after a couple of u-turns and meanderings and it was well worth it! It is a working art studio, carving village, homestead to the founder and all around general wonderment.

We first walked in under a giant elephant arch-way which then opened into a large patio type setting with some small buildings, sheds and various covered-shaded areas. Our first thoughts were that we have intruded into a private yard, home or business...so we stopped and looked around. We then see a couple of gentlemen sitting under one of the covered areas carving an elephant from a block of wood that he holds with his feet. OK...we must be in the right place! With a nodding of the head, a smile and some fancy hand motions we understand that we are allowed to walk around and explore.

We walked cautiously around, into a couple buildings, up some funky stairs, over rickety floors and finally down to where the artists were sitting around carving and making the finished products. Really pretty amazing.

Quiet and beautiful place to see local artist to create the most realistic elephant carvings. By the way, A map on Trip Advisor is wrong. Please Check from Google map again or GPS : 18 43.337, 99 06.977 or search for Baan Jang Nak

A building full of elephants, carved, cast in cement, made of wood chips, painted, sewn, with some rhinos, gorillas, a bear and pigs thrown in. A lot of the work is beautiful and he just asks for a donation, but some of the elephants are wearing down and it begins to feel a bit like a hoarders episode. Still enjoyed the art

My husband is a woodworker, so we knew we wanted to visit. It was well worth the trip outside the city. Our driver wasn't sure how to find it, so my husband's Google map made it easy. Once there we enjoyed watching the carvers at work, visiting the gallery of all of the elephant artwork collected by the artist Khun Pech and talking with his daughter who was very helpful. We purchase a lovely carving of an elephant whose trunk was curled inward-a sign of good luck according to the daughter. We had a wonderful time enjoying all of the artistry and kind people.

The kids aged 7,9 were thrilled with the place. It was like entering into someone’s traditional home, a few units connected through steps and open doorways. It was very quaint and filled with personal Knick knacks. The carvings were beautiful and so realistic, down to dusty eyelashes on life sized carvings of elephant. Kids were so happy to mount and sit on a life sized elephant statue for pictures. You can have coffee or tea at their shop or buy an elephant carving for souvenir.

This is such an amazing place just 20 min ride from the city center.
Once we arrived, we immediately felt like home. Relaxing family vibe, dozens of carved elephants, authentic thai style wooden houses, delicious coffee and homemade cakes! This place is full of history, surrounded by nature and has super amiable owners to chit chat and get a dive into the Thai culture.
Highly recommend!
