Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Ci'en Pagoda was built by he late President Chiang Kai-shek to honour his mother. It is on top of a mountain that is 954 metres (3130 feet) high. The pagoda is 45 metress (150 feet) making the pagoda exactly 1,000 metres (3280 feet) tall. Ci'en Pagoda is the most prominent feature of the Sun Moon lake area. I have climbed Ci'en Pagoda serveral times. Chiang Kai-skek is conroversial these days but he did leave some attractive monuments.

It's a nice drive up the mountain to where the base of the pagoda is, and then it's a small climb up the stairs to the pagoda, then more steps to the top of the pagoda for the best view of Sun Moon Lake, and you can skip taking the gondola cable car!

Very nice view of Sun Moon Lake from the top of this pagoda. There are many steps to take to get to the top of area where the pagoda is located so make sure you are in shape to make the trek.

Located on Sha Ba Lan mountain this pagoda is a nice 700 meter nature walk up from the car park . Built by Chiang Kai-Shek in memory of his mother it’s six levels with a big bell at the top and the panoramic views of Sun Moon Lake from each level are spectacular and great for photos and even better it’s free

Must visit.
You must climb up the 8-storey pagoda for breath-taking views of SML. Free entry.

We took a bus from Ita Thao (just 3 stops away and drop at XuanZang Temple), but bus comes only every half hr or just walk the steep slope there which will take 30 mins too).

At XuanZang Temple, don't forget to walk into this temple too to see the kwan-In statue. When coming down, we walked back to XuanZang and follow the 30 min trail down to the XuanGuang temple pier and ride the SML ferry.

Don't bother to climb from the XuanGuang pier as it will take 40 mins of tough trail climb. You can bus from pier too (bus comes only every hour)

This offers the best view of Sun Moon Lake in our opinion. Period. Nothing comes close. We did the long climb all the way from the pier before realizing the round island bus goes there too. (The hike is nice actually.. good exercise and scenery - in winter). The pagoda is clean, well maintained and nice. The view at the top offers a panoramic 360 view of SML. Well worth it.
