About
Formosa Aboriginal Cultural Village has the largest outdoor museum in Taiwan dedicated to displaying the traditional homes and architecture of Taiwanese indigenous tribes. The nine villages are arrayed over an expansive section of hillside to give visitors a feel of what native Taiwanese villages looked like so many years ago. All buildings were reconstructed based on fieldwork research and blueprints drawn up by anthropologists in the 1930s and 40s.

This place is clean and the people are friendly. Food options were somewhat limited. Seemed like only about 2/3 of the place was even open. There were hardly any visitors on the day we went, which was a little awkward. The plus side was there were no lines for the rides. The aboriginal villages are interesting and we learned a lot about indigenous cultures in Taiwan.

This is an odd combination of theme park and local culture. The cultural part is very good with shows and recreated villages. The adventure part is not that large and on the day I visited not many people were there so you could get straight onto rides without queuing.

On 12/25, I went to the Formosan Aboriginal Cultural Village for outdoor teaching at an elementary school. The attitude of the female staff member of Leapfrog was very bad. She was very rude to the primary school students. "Hurry up, I have been looking for a schoolbag for so long, and others don't have to play!" The joyful mood turned to fear in an instant!
Please educate the staff well and the service attitude needs to be improved...
They are just elementary school students!

The promotional material says this is a place where you can see traditional Taiwanese lifestyle and aboriginal traditions.

Don't believe it! It is a total tourist set up, with no authenticity whatsoever, apart from some of the tribespeople who genetically are indeed Taiwanese aborigines.

Adding insult to injury this attraction now includes an amusement park that is totally bizarre in its eclectic themes, which include Aztec, Mayan, Caribbean, European gardens, a Roman fountain, Aladdin Square, and Disneyland-style rides and amusement arcades.

I feel sorry for the true Taiwanese aborigines who see their culture prostituted in this way just to earn tourist dollars.

Obviously your opinion is what you thought and different from most others. However I thank you for your personal point of view and try to satisfy all or most visitors. As a cultural and entertaining amusement park which last for over thirty years and been one of the top theme parks in Taiwan, we shall keep making our best effort to meet most expectation.

I was excited to learn more about the indigenous people of Taiwan. But once I exited the gondola into the Aboriginal Culture Village, I walked into a massive theme park of replica experiences - including the requisite trinkets and music for sale - that ultimately led me to a bizarre collection of non-Taiwanese theme park water rides and roller coasters (including the "Mayan experience" and "Gold Rush"). The park was neat, orderly, and the performances quite entertaining. But there was limited educational content or explanation on exhibits. You simply move from tribal area to tribal area with little understanding of the history of the people, their customs, culture, or values. Each tribal area did however contain a gift shop.

The hands down part of the village was the Museum. It was empty when I went inside, and I got to spend as much time as I wanted experiencing the extraordinary tribal artifacts. This museum was an absolute gem in the midst of a theme park.

This experience would be very fun for families and teens. But as a tourist hoping for more history and less outright entertainment, the name "culture village" was misleading!

On 24 February 2015 at about 0915 hrs, my wife and I took bus #25 from opposite Watson/Macdonald cafe at Fuxing Road near Fengjia Night Market to Taichung Train station. We alighted opposite Taichung train station after 40 minutes and walked forward to Golden Plaza to find the Nantou bus counter. It was closed. The whole plaza was under renovation and it was fenced up. After inquiring around, we found that Nantou bus stop had moved further ahead on same side of road opposite Taichung train station. Look out for red signs and bus stop 30m further after Golden Plaza (a round tall building about 30 storey high) outside a motorcycle rental shop.

Bus #6670 will go to Puli, FACV and Sun Moon Lake. At 0750, 0850, 0950 and 1550 hrs only, bus #6670 will go to FACV before going to Sun Moon Lake. If you missed these timing, you still can take bus #6670 to Puli's Nantou station and change to another bus to FACV. Please check schedule - http://www.ntbus.com.tw/hsr6.html

At 1028 hrs, a Nantou bus #6670 arrived. On boarding, tap in with Easycard or pay by exact cash NT$190 into coin box. There is no change given if you overpay. If you pay by cash, take tickets from driver and return to driver on alighting. Nantou bus #6670 is a spacious new bus. Driver proceeded to Taichung HSR station to pick more passengers. I could have taken a bus from Fengjia NM to Taichung HSR station, exit 5 for Nantou bus counter which was easy but there is no guarantee of a seat if bus was full. Ride was smooth and traffic was light. I had taken the bus which did not go to FACV. Normally, this bus should reach FACV in 75 mimutes and SML in 90 minutes. I informed the driver to stop at Yuchi town which is about 2-3 km from FACV. At Yuchi, I tried to stop a taxi but non was available. So I went to a convenience shop and told a lady seller that I needed a car to go to FACV. She made a few calls and within 1 minutes said that a sedan car was available at NT$200. We agreed on the price and was told to wait 2 minutes. I was told by a tour guide friend of this method. Many drivers worked together with these convenience shops to get business.

A almost new car arrived within 2 minutes driven by a jovial middle aged guy. He was very informative and talked about the FACV and its attractions. He said that there were a lot of cherry blossom now in FACV which we were going to see. We arrived at the gate/gantry and I paid him NT$200. Normal admission to FACV is NT$780 per adult but there are promotion rate after 1430 hrs at NT$480. We had arrived at 1200 hrs. I had already purchased my tickets costing NT$580 per adult at Ibon machine in 7 Eleven shop near Fengjia NM night before. After collecting my tickets, lady staff at gantry exchanged them for admission tickets and allowed us to enter. There were many red cherry blossom trees in the carpark. It is stated that there are more than 6000 cherry blossom trees in FACV. Everywhere we walked, there were rows and rows of red cherry blossom trees. We took hundreds of photos.

We walked through the carpark to entrance where there is a small train station called Plaza Cafe station and a small train that go round the lower ground, European setting and imitation White House. Next to this train station is the restrooms. We waited in the queue which was fast and took a 12 minutes ride. After the ride, we walked to the right to the staircases going further uphill. There is a visitor center here, some cafes and rides. We took lunch here. We could hear children screaming with laughter while enjoying their rides. After lunch we walked to the cable car station by following the sign and took a ride further up mountain. High up from the cable car cabin, we could see lots of red cherry blossom trees with occasional pink trees everywhere below.

Early spring is a good time to come to FACV because of its cherry blossom (Sakura) and there were many couples having their wedding photo shoots. My daughter was one of them. She had booked with a Taiwan wedding photographer in Singapore during a exhibition 6 months earlier. A team comprising of photographer, driver, makeup artist and assistant including my daughter and her husband were at FACV earlier. As my wife and I were walking in the FACV, I was receiving photos by What'sapp from her from another location.

On the way, we could see the UFO ride – a 85m high tower. You will sit or rather hang around the circular structure like a UFO going up to the top. Suddenly the UFO will drop like a spaceship crashing. You can feel the force of gravity as you drop. Image an aeroplane when it hit a air pocket, it will drop like a stone. I am definitely not going up even if you pay me!!! I don't want to throw up my lunch and embarrass myself in front of all the people. We could see other rides and dances at different locations below.

We reached the second cable car station, got out to explore around and took more photos. We were not interested in the rides but more for views and sceneries because I had been there before. FACV is a big place. If you want to explore every places and take rides, you will need at least 1 full day. At about 1500 hrs, we took the cable car up to top of the mountain before descending down on other side to Sun Moon Lake in the west. It was a long ride of about 30 minutes.

The view of Sun Moon Lake was fantastic when we were going down. It was almost dry at end of lake furtherest from Shuishe Pier which is on opposite side of the lake. It had not rain for some time and water level was low. I could also see many cherry blossom trees at the carpark next to SML ropeway station as we got nearer. Soon we reached SML ropeway station and got off to explore. The tickets counters were next to toilets on ground floor under the ropeway and facing the carpark. There was a cafeteria in the center of this station and some shops selling soveniers. Ita Thao Pier is about 15 minutes walk away on the left while Shuishe Pier is across the lake.

If in the morning you have take Nantou bus #6670 directly to Sun Moon Lake, you would have to get off at Shuishe Pier, take lake bus #6669 to SML ropeway station to buy tickets to go up to FACV. In reverse, we took lake bus #6669 along road outside SML ropeway station to Shuishe Pier and got off in front of Visitor center/Delight mall. Nantou bus counter is here and this is the place to take bus back to Taichung HSR station or Taichung Train station. I bought 2 bus tickets for 1825 hrs thinking that seats were confirmed but it was not so. When I came down after dinner, the bus was already waiting and there was only 2 seats right at last row. Luckily we went up fast because more passengers started boarding but could not get any seats. 20 passengers were allowed to stand till Puli station where they got down to wait for another bus. No standing was allowed in buses on highway which started from Puli to Taichung as well as on all highways in Taiwan.

Please refer to Nantou bus schedule for return timings because there are only 1715, 1825 and 1925 hrs buses going directly back to Taichung. Buses on other timing do not go directly back to Taichung so you need to transfer at Puli station. If you are staying in hotel/minsu at Ita Thao or Shuishe Pier in SML, you will save a lot of traveling time but problem is whole Sun Moon Lake is dark and quiet after 1900 hrs.

The Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village (FACV) is located on higher ground near Sun Moon Lake. You can access it by car or by cable car. Take the cable car. The ride is worth it. Not only are the cable cars new and brightly colored, they offer great side views as the cars are mostly clear glass. To add more excitement, take the crystal cabins. 1 in every 4 cabins is crystal (meaning you get a glass panel at the bottom) and these are the green ones.

The cable car brings you to the entrance of FACV. Pick up a map and follow the path that leads you to the Adventure Isle. Along the way, visit the mock aboriginal homes. The homes are dimly lit but that is the way it should be. Marvel at the different types of construction (stone, wood, etc) and get ready for some performances at specific times. At the center, there is a Sakura Avenue, with rows of the cherry trees lining the area. March would be a good time to see them in full bloom. However, these are young trees and the blossoms, although pretty, are not dense enough. Nevertheless, you can appreciate the flowers and the color it brings.

A little down from the cherry blossoms, you will enter the amusement park. There are some rides for children and bigger rides for adults. After an hour or so of fun, you can proceed to the internal cable car which brings you back to the entrance for you to exit to the cable car that brings you back to Sun Moon Lake.

Things to try: The Thao meal set, the blowdart (NT100 for 10 darts), the pestle music
Things to avoid: The space mountain (dark and useless ride), the pirate ship

Get the tickets earlier as a package at the jetty and you can save about NT200 per person. The tickets are sold 6-8pm but you can try your luck.

I love to learn different cultures of different countries. We learned a lot the modern side of Taiwan but don't really know the history or culture from the aborigine of Taiwan, often I only heard about Alishan but there are many tribes in Taiwan.

Formosan Culture Village have built up the model houses and showing the lifestyle of 9 tribes in Taiwan. They also have cultural shows at difference time. We also have chance to interact with the workers there who are originally from their own tribes and you can ask them questions about their tribes. One thing I learned is "Owl" is the lucky animal to some of them, such a beautiful creature. In the village also have souvenir shops that selling the craft and food products from their tribes. There is a mini theme park in the village as well.

Make sure you do homework and visit during the right season. During our visit is the raining season and rain heavily, we have to take umbrella and couldn't enjoy much, many parts of the village closed when rain.

When you arrive to Formosan, take the cable car to the top and then walk down from the top of the village. The village is closing at 5 pm, be there early so you have much time to explore slowly, at least 4 hours if you came from Sun Moon Lake. If you just visit Formosan, then should be there in the morning, the village is big and you have to walk a lot.

The entrance fee is not cheap, but I feel is worthy for the learning.

It was raining when we were there but the trail was easy to navigate, gentle sloping and not slippery.

Things to do: catch the performance of the various aboriginal tribes at the stage, have some sampling of the food and wine made there, and marvel at the view and nature of the place :) the 30 minutes cable car is a sight to behold, with the full view of the sun moon lake.

Not recommended for a traveler who wants to rush all attractions in a day. It’s a cultural exploration experience here, and it can easily take a day to complete.

Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village (九族文化村, FACV) is located near the famous Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) in Nantou, Taiwan. It is a privately owned theme park established in 1986 by Jung-i Chang who wanted a place to preserve and teach new generations about Taiwanese aboriginal heritage. The 62 ha (153 acre) Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village has three main areas: Aboriginal Village Park (原住民部落區), Amusement Isle (歡樂世界) and European Garden (歐洲花園). The latest addition was the 1.877 km (1.166 mi) Sun Moon Lake Ropeway (日月潭纜車) completed in December 2009 which runs between Sun Moon Lake station (日月潭車站) and FACV station (九族文化村車站).

We visited Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village more than two times and took the ropeway twice. It was an incredible ride where we could overlook the Sun Moon Lake from above; it was a different experience to admire the lake. Once we got off the ropeway, we were in the Aboriginal Village Park. We saw recreated traditional houses like those used by different aboriginal tribes so we could learn about their culture and daily living. We also were greeted by their traditional performances and archery lessons. Do not forget to visit the Formosan Aboriginal Museum. The next attraction was the European Garden where we saw a beautiful Ritz Palace (麗宮), European Palace Garden, Roman Fountain, and Baroque Bell Tower. We also took the Miniature Train to enjoy the garden. If you are visiting in spring, you will be greeted by an array of cherry blossoms in the European Garden. The last spot is the amusement park that added in 1992. You can find “Caribbean Splash” for the family, “Maya Adventure” which is a suspended roller coaster that swings and sways as it makes its way through a series of twists and turns for adventurers, and the 85 m (279 ft) high “UFO Freefall”.

You can go to the Ritz Palace if you would like to have Chinese meal. Be sure to mark down the shows you want to see and plan your trip before wandering around the whole area. The Sun Moon Lake Ropeway has been upgrading its cable cars with transparent flooring since December 29, 2017. You can have a new experience of the exceptional panoramic view of the beautiful landscape.
