- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, United Kingdom4,119 contributionsSome spectacular landscapes but park administration could be betterWe undertook a two-night self-drive holiday in the park in early November. Some elements were extremely good, particularly the Swallow Trail and Tunnel of Nine Turns but we found park administration to be very frustrating. We were aware of road closures at certain times of day and tried to structure our visits to various attractions around these closures. However, information on timings seemed to vary depending on your location and roads we expected to be closed were open. Some trails were closed, where there are landslips, this is understandable, but they also closed trails for maintenance and no advance notice is given at National Park Visitor Centres ahead of time. As an example, the Shakadang Trail, shown as open on the day we arrived at the Visitor Centre was closed the following day and we only found this out when we arrived at the entrance to the site. Tour buses seemed equally baffled. We had originally intended to use public buses to get around but information online is so sparse, we decided at the last minute to hire a car in Hualien and we were so pleased we did. The public bus service at present is quite sporadic with long gaps in between services and buses were often full so we would currently not recommend this as a means of getting around. The 302 bus does still operate through the park between Tianxiang and Xingcheng but there are only six buses a day (9am – 3pm) Monday to Friday and eight at weekends. The 302 bus terminates at Taroko Visitor Centre and contrary to what we had understood there are no buses running through Buluowan. This makes it impossible to see many attractions if staying here without own transport or use of a taxi. Some elements we found a little underwhelming, the Quingshui Cliffs and Xiangde Temple as examples. Overall we were happy to have made the visit as part of our tour of Taiwan, but better public transportation would make a big difference to accessibility around the park.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 November 2023

We walked for about one and a half hours on the Shakadang Trail which was very dramatic, but felt very safe. We also visited the Eternal Spring Shrine and waterfall which was again dramatic. He is a very safe driver, he spoke good english and knows the area very well. Our familly had a fantastic day. We higly recommend Tonny, you won’t be disappointed.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 December 2023
- luxuryvoyageSwitzerland4,137 contributionsImpressive and winding gorgeAn impressive winding gorge with many worthwhile sightseeing stops. You can visit the gorge on a day tour (for example from Taipei). However, it is much nicer to combine the tour with an overnight stay at Silks Place at the end of the gorge. There is a bus that stops at all the tourist hotspots (hop on hop off), but you lose a lot of time. We traveled with our own rental car and found this to be the best option. The only disadvantage is that it was sometimes difficult to find a parking space at the sights. Alternatively, I would recommend a private tour with a driver, then you don't have to look for a parking space. The front part of the gorge (at the entrance to the gorge) is rather boring, the interesting sights are at the back. If you are only here on a day trip, you should drive to the end of the gorge first and start your sightseeing tour from there. You will need more time than you think to see the entire gorge. The Taroko Gorge was one of the highlights of our trip to Taiwan.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 January 2024

A convenient and most economic way to get to Taroko National Park is by taking a train to Hualien or Xincheng (which is closer to Taipei, takes 2.5 to 3 hours one-way and costs around 400 TWD or US$ 13). There are inexpensive shuttle buses from both Hualien and Xincheng stations that stop by every attractions. My favorites are: Jiuqudong (九曲洞) and Xiaozhuli walking trail (小錐麓步道) which is connected with the Zhakadang walking trail (砂卡礑步道). Jiuqudong offers the best scenery and photo ops. The two aforementioned walking trails offers good, challenging exercises and some good scenery along the way. The Changchun Shrine (長春祠) is a waste of time; so is the the park headquarter and visitor center stop, unless you want to take a break at the restaurant there, where the food is surprisingly good and reasonably priced. I wanted to go to the Swallow Cave (燕子口) too, but it was closed that day.

We stayed at Taroko Lodge in Xincheng which is 5 Min drive from the Xincheng Taroko Station.
The lady runs the lodge with her son, she doesn't speak English. She is a lovely lady and is very hospitable, we had a native speaker with us to help with translation.
Taroko Gorge was a great experience. We spent 1 day riding down and one day we revisited the 9 turns and Xicheng by taxi. We also went to lovely seaside lookout.

Beautiful national park, absolutely worth visiting. Expect to see crystal clear waters, marble rock faces, giant boulders, forestry and butterflies.
Easily accessible from Hualien bus station (next to the train station) via tourist bus number 310. You can purchase a hop on hop off ticket (all day pass) for 250 TWD inside the bus station, allowing you to visit different spots along the national park route.
There is an online timetable that tracks the location of the bus so you always know how long you will be waiting for the next one and can plan your timings accordingly. Google 'Taroko national park bus schedule' and click on the link to the government website (it's in English) and then click on the link at the top of the page for Taroko Route #310 bus and all of the information on stops, timetables and fares will be there for you.
If you enjoy hiking, Shakadang trail is a beautiful 3 / 4 hours trek (including stops), easy difficulty and the bus drops you outside the trail head.
Enjoy!

I visited Taroko National Park in November 2022. I very much recommend getting a driver for your visit, as the roads can be difficult to drive on and it is especially helpful if you have a limited amount of time and want to maximize what you can see during your visit.
I highly recommend the driver I hired (based on many other positive reviews from others), Tonny Teng. He is very kind, knowledgeable, professional, and he made my visit to the park very easy and fun! His english is good and he will cater your day to your interests/needs.
I cannot recommend him highly enough!

Especially worthwhile viewing the park when it is sunny. Lots of nice walkways and trails. We booked a ultra last minute tour (afternoon before) with a English speaking tour guide. Unfortunately tour guide could not explain much as he lost himself in sentence build up and topics. But the tour itself (30 $pp) was definitely worthwhile to get an idea of the landscape here

It is a must visit if you go to Taiwan for the first time ! The vistas, the sceneries and views with pristine blue waters swelling with white crests on waves that greet you are a sight for sore eyes be it Hua Lian county, or Swallow Gorges.. although we didnt see any swallow there 🦜 haha, but the rock formations are gorgeous.. comparable to Grand Canyon in the US. The suspension bridges are a work of art to see ! A day in Taroko National Park is a day entrenched in your memories forever ! 🎉

Has anyone booked online/experience the free Outdoor Interpreter service (english) which starts at the Taroko Visitors Centre to Tianxiang? Seems there is a multimedia presentation at this centre & another Landscape of Taroko at the Tianxiang Service Station. Wondering if they are worth attending.

These tours are good because the tour bus would drop you right at the scenic spot, so you don’t need to worry finding a parking spot (very limited) if you self drive or long waiting time for taking local bus.

Hi. I plan to visit taroko national park around end of april 2019 and will be staying at hualien city. I plan to take a bus but dont know which bus to take and where to take it?
Written 9 February 2019
Yes, there is bus service between Hualien and Taroko National Park. We have seen many tourists using it. Check with your hotel on arrival.

Hello, I am planning to go to Taroko National Park in December around Christmas, was going to find a train from Taipei. Did staying in Hualien go OK - or was is super busy/touristy? I wanted to do some all day hikes and sounds like I need a permit as well for that. Are you able to get permits when you get there, or do you know if you should apply on line as well? Thanks
Written 8 October 2018
I would rec'd staying in Hualien at least for 1-2 night esp. if you enjoy hiking. Staying in Hualien is a much slower pace than Taipei. It is a small coastal town that relies on tourism, but not overly touristy. It's like visiting San Francisco (Taipei) and Monterey (Hualien); analogy if you're familiar w/ Northern CA bay area. There is a night market where you can get local & aborigine foods; a small downtown (lots of mom & pop shops), in general the food/restaurants are cheaper here vs Taipei. We did not rent a car and relied on taxi's to take us from the train stn to our minsu; and our tour guides to/from Toroko Gorge NP.
The only trail in Toroko Gorge NP that requires a permit is the Zhuilu Old Trail. They limit the number of permits per day and you must start the hike no later than 10am (as they don't want hikers to be stranded too late on the trail @ the end of the day). For Zhuilu Old Trail, rec'd that you hire a guide to take you as they will pre-arrange the permit for you and provide you w/ a ride to/from Toroko NP from your hotel in Hualien. This is an all day activity. You can use a 2nd day to hike the shorter trails in Toroko GNP.

I do not agree. There were signs along the road showing where the trails are.

Hello, we are planning to drive from Sun Moon Lake through Taroko National Park to Hualien. Any tips on must see? Also, are the trail heads hard to find? I've marked down some spots but worry about the signage and knowing when to stop.
Thanks,

First of all, the road there is far from ideal. Be very careful and patient when you drive.
Road signages and Google map should be adequate to help you to navigate.
Several places that really impressed me in my last trip. They are:
Tianchi at Fushoushan Farm (Excellent view)
Wuling (Excellent view)
Bilu Giant Tree
Taroko Gorge
Try search them in Google map to see whether they are on your route.
Wish you a wonderful trip.

Written 11 September 2017
Hi Monica,
You can also take the train to Hualien and from there take the bus or what we did is to rent a taxi in Hualien for a whole day who will drop and pick u up any time and location. It is possible to do it in one day from Taipei to Taroko national park.
