Beautiful museum with a great collection
The national palace museum is definately a must visit when in Taipei. The have a great imperal collection of bronzes, jades, paintings, ceramics, personal artifacts of the imperial court and more. However there are also some parts that are not very interesting to a western tourist in my opinion, like the calligraphy and books sections. Of course this can be different if you can actually read Chinese. That said the ceramic, personal artifacts and jade sections are particulary beautiful as is the bronze section. However if you visited the National Museum of China in Beijing, you wont see anything new in that last section. All in all good for 1,5 - 2 hours.

Beautiful museum of Chinese and Taiwanese art/history
If you enjoy seeing works of art from different countries, this museum is for you. Having never traveled to Taiwan before, we decided to visit, and were not disappointed. They have an extremely large collection of Chinese and Taiwanese art. Well worth the price of admission (which was far less than US museums). We learned a great deal about historical aspect as well. There’s enough to keep you busy all day, but enough to just see for a few of hours if your time is limited. definitely worthwhile!

    Excellent Museum
What I liked about this place was that, although it was very crowded with people, there was still plenty of room to move around. The place is vast, spread over several floors and many galleries. The jade and ceramics collections are world-class. Paintings and calligraphy also on show. Excellent shop.

Take your time and wonder deeply
The National Palace Museum is a collection of historic artefacts which have been miraculously preserved over the centuries. Some artefacts include "must see" things such as the jade cabbage and the tiny boat, carved from an olive pip. The National Palace displays the world's best collection of Chinese culture, take your time and wonder deeply.

A vast number of exhibits so help is needed
We had originally intended to take the guided tour only to learn all tickets has been sold for the day. Some guidance is helpful to the untrained eye because there are so many exhibits, it is impossible to take everything in and understand which exhibits are ‘must see’. However, there is a good self-guide on their website ‘classic tour II’ and ‘the emperor’s toy box’ that takes about two hours and covers all the highlights. The museum is split into individual rooms and the signage is good. Lots of tour groups in evidence but generally it never feels too crowded because of its size. The oldest pieces are on the top floor and some of the craftmanship particularly the jade pieces is amazing. Said to be the best collection of Chinese art in the world and we can see why. A place that should be visited on a tour of Taiwan.

    Great Museum
Contains the pre-WW2 Chinese Forbidden City art collection. The exhibits span 3 floors of a large building and are presented very nicely. There were English translations for each item which was excellent. A must see if visiting Taipei.

A Must Visit for Museum lovers
If you love museums especially history museums, do not miss this place. I was there to see plenty of interesting exhibits and you can see a lot of artifacts dating centuries old which says a lot of Taiwan's rich history. My 5 year old son was with me too and they have an interactive children's area where kids can learn and do activities.

Must see to learn about Taiwan!
Lots of cultural items and information to see and learn about Taiwan's history. Many rooms that feature different art pieces, and informational areas about Taiwan. Gift shop is large and has many cultural items. Very nicely designed inside. Audio tours available in many languages. Beautiful grounds and beautiful architecture.

$12 USD to see world-class Chinese treasures
The vast collection of Chinese art and artifacts here is fascinating. The museum provides a fascinating glimpse into China's rich cultural history. There is a free locker room by the admission booth. It's totally free and a staff crew will be there to look after you're belongings. As for the queue, Iwaited nearly 10 mins to get my entry ticket. If you can get the ticket online, totally do it!

    Mediocre English Tour
My wife and I took the English language tour which lasted from 3:00 to 4:30. The tour guide was nice but the tour wasn’t too impressive. She spent too much time in certain areas and solicited too much input from our tour group as to where we should spend time. We would have gotten a lot more out of our visit had we just used the audio guide. If you schedule a tour, be aware that it takes at least 5 minutes to get from the road to the inside of the museum.

This is one of the premier museums on Chinese artworks in the world, its core holdings being the incomparable treasures from the Imperial Palace of the Qing Dynasty. The museum itself is relatively small, which means like most museums there always be some wonderful special exhibitions. I always visit this museum whenever I am in Taipei - primarily for these special exhibitions. Before relations between Taiwan and China cooled, the museum was packed with Chinese visitors from the mainland but not so much any more, which actually made my visit much more pleasant. There are now some sections with multimedia presentations, but by and large the displays are pretty standard. Scholarly and informative, yes; imaginative and stimulating, not so much. But still worth a visit particularly if you are into Chinese art and culture.

Nothing much to see if you will purchase tickets to get inside. Very clean place. Only 1 cafe within the museum hence you would really need to line if you want to eat here. Theres is a restaurant few walks within the area that is also a bit crowded.

Very good for pictures only and see artifacts.

Full disclosure: I am not a museum person. But after visiting the southern branch of the museum in Chiayi we decided to come to Taipei to see the main branch. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed some of the displays so much, like snuff bottles and curio boxes. And the famous jade bok choy cabbage (I didn’t even have to stand in line). Worth the visit!

Spent an entire day at the National Palace Museum. It's my third visit since 1986, and it's the single most important place to visit on a trip to Taiwan provided you enjoy Chinese art. The museum wasn't super crowded when we visited, which was wonderful and allowed for better viewing and lingering over the artworks. My last visit was a disappointment owing to huge tour groups from mainland China. There was no sense of crowd control then and the whole experience was closer to being in a rugby scrum. English explanations are good for the artwork, and getting an audio guide is well worth it.

My principal complaint this visit is that there aren't enough paintings on display, and too many rooms were closed (especially on the 1st floor). Another annoyance was the waste of display space with multimedia presentations of the artwork. Only a small fraction of the whole collection is ever on display at one time, and for the life of me I can't figure out why the museum would devote any display space to multimedia displays. That, in my opinion, is better left to being available free online where anyone can see it and it can inform a future visit or general interest. Nonetheless, when in Taipei this is a great museum to visit.

We took MRT from Taipei Main Station to Shilin MRT Station and took direct R30 bus to National Palace Museum. The R30 bus goes directly to the main entrance which you enter and the museum tickets. The ticket costs 350 Taiwan Dollars. The museum is nice and well maintained. One building was closed. The main building was opened. The Chinese art works are beautiful. The staff were friendly and helpful.

We spent more than 4 hours here and it was wonderful! There are treasures in every room and they are so well displayed and explained - it is wonderful. We saw so many amazing pieces of art - of all types. And they have a terrific tea house/lunch room if you need to take a break (as we did). I highly recommend that you go and take your time and visit each of the rooms - you will find something special in each...

China has a very long history, many artefacts displayed here were ancient long before Christ was born -- the oracle bones, for example. Many artefacts are quite beautiful, some require a knowledge of Chinese civilisation, such as calligraphy. Allow yourself enough time, it's a big museum. By the way, if these artefacts had remained in mainland China, many would have been destroyed by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.

This was my second visit to the museum, but the majority of the collection works in shifts, so I was able to see it with a certain freshness.
Public transportation from Shangri-La takes quite a long time, and since they side-by-side with us near the front, we choose a taxi directly and leave for it right after opening. An early or late visit is the correct answer, and you can rotate slowly throughout. Although the Chinese cabbage had just returned from a business trip to the NPM and was not on display, I was generally satisfied with the fact that the famous items such as "Meat-Shaped Stones," "Beni-Shirotama Medullary Brush Wash" and "Jyogama - 白瓷尬兒堀" were firmly held, so 350NT$ (foreigner fee) is a bargain sale.

The number and scale of the exhibits is amazing.
Apparently none of the exhibits were looted.
I was able to see the important parts quickly in about two hours, but it would take a lot longer to see everything.

The famous emerald cabbage was loaned out and returned a few days ago. I was lucky to be able to see it. It was apparently one of Consort Jin's possessions. Looking closely at the intricate carvings, I noticed grasshoppers and katydids carved into the leaves.

The Celadon Plain Daffodil Basin from Jingdezhen Official Kilns, said to be the greatest masterpiece of Ru celadon, is valued at hundreds of millions, but it was apparently used as a cat food bowl at the time.
