About
Hualien Pine Garden is used to be the Hualien Harbor Military Command which was built in 1942 by the Japanese who chose the site for its height advantage. From the command, you can see both the mouth of the Meilun River to the north and Hualien Harbor and have a clear, unobstructed view out over the Pacific, making it both a strategic place of a military command center and, later on, a pleasant place for high-ranking officers to relax. It is said that the Kamikaze Special Attack Unit would gather here to partake in "Gentleman's Sake" before departing on missions. Although many creative spaces have been added to Hualien Pine Garden Park, it still remains the most complete example of Japanese military architecture in Hualien and was registered as a historical building in Hualien on the 23rd September 2002. Every corner has its story, welcome to explore more of here. 1 Log Cabin 2 Wishing Pond 3 Air Shelter 4 Oven 5 Taiwan Gift Hall 6 Okinawa Pine 7 Life in the wetlands 8Pine Cafe

The Pine Garden in Hualien was high on my to do list when visiting mainly because it's a top attraction in the area. I walked here from the city center and it was easy to get to. There is an entrance fee but then you can freely walk the grounds. On the grounds there is also a cafe and souvenir shop. The historical significance of the building surprised me. I didn't know the area was occupied by the Japanese. So I did learn a lot on my visit here. The grounds are beautiful and the views are fantastic. I wouldn't necessarily say you have to come here, but if there is enough time in your itinerary, it is worth a visit.

Interesting site, where Japanese pilots met before flying on kamikaze missions in the Second World War. Peaceful gardens with old pine trees. There is a preserved air raid shelter. Cafe with cakes. Discount for seniors.

A very beautiful, peaceful place. Built and planted by the Japanese, in 1942/43 just as the war was turning against them. Many now-grand old Okinawa pine trees. A main house that has a colonial grace to it. An outdoor/covered tea area. A superb gift store with beautiful Taiwanese made handcrafted items. And don't miss the air raid shelter that includes haunting photographs of Japanese kamikaze pilots taken in the hours approaching their final missions.

Did not know what I stepped in. I mistakenly thought it’s just a nice garden. Turn out, this building is full of a lot of ‘Japan occupation era ‘history. Shocked to find out it’s directly related to back then Kamikaze Commando. Imagine some young pilots had their last treatment prior to their suicide mission. The air raid bunker also remind me somewhat my childhood life. Overall, the garden is very nice and history is so great to educate me again.

Do you want to know something about history? If you want, just follow me to the place which is full of the history.
Pine Garden is situated on Meilun Mountain, built in 1942. With the outbreak of the Pacific War, it used to be the army military Department of Hualien Harbor, for recruitment and management of military service, but now it is historical style area.
When you visit there, you can go to the Air-raid Shelter. At that time Japanese soldiers built it in order to protect themselves from air raids. When you go inside, you will see there are many pictures of the past on the wall. In addition, you also can go to the Ocean view veranda, enjoy the full view of Pacific Ocean and Hualien Harbor. If you want to take a walking, suggest you can walk on the trail behind Pine Garden to glance at the buildings alone the bank of Meilun River, admire the built during the Japanese occupation. While you are tired, there is a café offer you to take a rest.
Don't worry about the ticket price, the general visitors is 60 NT dollars, children or over sixty-five years old are 30 NT dollars and local people is free. About traffic, driving from the train station will take fifteen minutes, by bicycle will take forty minutes and on foot need one hour. In this retro Japanese style house, look forward to you leaving a journey different from the past.

Escape from the hustle and bustle of busy life ,there is a peaceful place you must visit-The Pine Garden. On the Meilun Mountain, not far away from the Hualien downtown area, this amazing historical site tells you a story. The Pine Garden built in 1942 when Taiwan was colonized by Japan during the World War II , it used to be the office of the “Naval Administration” because Japanese government could overlook the entire Meilun Creek estuary, Hualien Harbor and the Pacific here . In the other word, if you want a bird’s eye view of them, don’t miss the great chance! Some of the pine trees in Pine Garden were transplanted from Okinawa since 1921. In recent year, they are sick because of pest infection . There were about 60 old pine tree in 2013,but in 2015 are only 31 left. For the health of the pine trees ,the only thing that the visitors need to do is keep off the grace. After visiting, there still have one thing you can’t miss-Pine Garden's Vanilla Cafe. You can have cakes, cream puff and coffee . Enjoy the low tea in this wonderful place.Historic buildings, amazing view, old pines and delicious low tea. What are you waiting for ? If you are citizens of Hualien Country, the ticket is for free. Plan your holiday, Pine Garden is your best choice.

Hualien, a coastal city seen as a military vital area when Taiwan was ruled by Japanese. If you want to learn more historical information about Hualien, don't forget to visit the Pine Garden.
Pine Garden is located in the Mt. Meilun where you can enjoy a bird's eye view of Hualien city. You can go there not only by car but also on foot. Remember to buy the ticket before entering. If you are the local of Hualien, you can visit for free while the strangers must pay for the 60-dollar ticket.
After arriving, the first scenery would amaze you is the aerial view of Beibin Coast. In addition, there are plenty of trees sowed hundred years ago in Pine Garden. In recent years, these old pine trees are sick due to pest infection. Consequently, the notice board “Please keep off the grass” is posted.
When it comes to the historical background of Pine Garden, you must read each board recoded the building's story during the time Taiwan used to be a Japanese colony. In 1941 the Pacific War broke out. To reinforce its troops, the Japanese government implemented the “Special Voluntary Army Scheme.” Formerly the Pine Garden was called “Hualien Harbor Army Department.” The building was completed in 1942 , functioning to recruit voluntary soldiers and manage military servicemen.
It is the air-raid shelter that the most special spot you can't miss in the Pine Garden. Japanese soldiers built the air-raid shelter 5m long and 2m high indoor. Now you can enter it to experience how the soldiers protected themselves from air raids.
Eventually, Pine Garden is a good place to visit if you are interested in the history. There is also something didn't mention in the article for you to explore.

If you want to take a forest trip, and enjoy the baptism of nature. “Pine Garden” is a good choice. It used to call “ Naval Administartion”. It built in late WWII. It was an important military command center of the japanese army in Hualien. There are many vestiges of history. For example the simulated air-raid shelter. There is playing the real recording in WWII. The wall posts about WWII’s document. The document introducing “Kamilcaze”. It is a group with a strong patriotism. They driving the fighter towards the enemy and suicide. The sound of fighters and explosion plus historical pictures make the air-raid shelter more realistic. In addition, there are many centennial pines. It also has ecological pool and cafe. Pine Garen in Meilun. It nearby Martyrs’Shrine. From the train station you can take a taxi or passenger traffic. Full ticket $60. Half ticket $30. Come and experience it in Hualien.
