If you have a car or a private driver and if you want to have ocean view, you should take this journey between Hualien and Taitung. This scenic drive is quite similar to traveling along US Highway-1 in California with long stretch of Pacific Ocean to keep your eyes and camera busy.

One downside of this coastal road is the lack of decent place for a meal. It is quite hard to find a reasonable good restaurant with nice food. There is a steam-boat buffet restaurant near the visitor centre at Bashian (Eight Immortal) Cave but it can be quite pricey.

Magnificent coastal scenery that vies with Cape Town and New South Wales. The journey is long but rewarding. There are many tourist traps available, so park the car and walk the beach. Take a side trip to the Taroko George.

I am so glad that we decided to drive along the coastline. It was indeed one of the highlight of our trip. there are many tourist spots and amazing beaches along the coastline that stretches from Taitung to Hualien.

We did a fairly comprehensive East Coast road trip from Hualien all the way to Taitung and up again into Taroko and then to the other side of the island. There were many memorable sights and the area is still pretty unexplored if you avoid some tourist traps along the way. In my travel blog, I detail the trip we made and give tips/advice. www.helenaaroundtheworld.blogspot.com

The East of Taiwan . There is a clear view of the Pacific Ocean from Hualien to Taitung . Many people like to go to here on weekend or during the vacation . I’m from Hualien , so I can always see the scenery . My favorite place is the The East coastal area . When my family and I took a day trip to Taitung , we always drove along the sea . In the summer , the sky and the sea like blue jewels , and a breeze blew which make me comfortable . We stopped by the way to play on the beach .It’s a hot day , so I putted my foot into seawater which was cool . After we were tried , we continued to go along the sea to Chenggong Township, Taitung County . At the way , we could see many small town and fishing ports . There are many fresh seafood . Then we sometimes ate seafood for lunch . That’s why it is my favorite place . I cherished every visit and left an unforgotten memory here . Maybe you can distract your thoughts and enjoy your free time .

I just can not understand why it is called a scenic area. We went from Taipei to Taitung vis Hualien by the in-land route and from Taitung to Chenggong by the sea route. Nothing to write home about. The aboriginals all became westernized and the scene is so not worth writing about. We live in San Francisco. The beauty of our coastal area is simply superb. No, we are not impressed. However, we are impressed by the incredibly kind people of Taiwan.

I was traveling in Tai Tung in the April. The weather was just perfect, sometime you could get a bit drizzling but it won't bother you at all for sightseeing and It'll actually bring up a different look of those spectacul mountains.

Taitung still has a prue and spiritual soul. I love the nice fresh local fruits and even it's a wide-loved city but you don't get the vibes of sucking up all the money from your pockets. Most of the prices is still reasonable. We got an ensuite room with a balcony for NTD 809 on Thursday, NTD 1050 for Friday

Just for exploring the most under the limited time, we will recommend any of you to drive through Route 9/11/30. All these routes are gonna bring you an unforgettable experience

Riding a two wheeler up and down the east coast is one of the most enjoyable things in Taiwan. The stretch from Hualien to Taitung is just stunning.

TIP: The view is better going from Taitung to Hualien because you'll have better views of the beach/ocean and mountains. If your'e going from Hualien to Taitung it's still nice, but the view won't be as expansive.

Great ocean views! It reminded me a little bit of highway pacific no.1in California. Someone else wrote a review that they were from there and that it wasn't worth it for them, well.. I can see that, but If you are not from there I highly recommend going to the east coast national scenic area!!

We rented a scooter from Hualien (close to the train station you can rent scooters also without an international drivers licence just with your regular one!). We drove down highway 11 until the first highway back. It was rainy and cold, but we loved it! Great views! On the way back we took the 193 instead of highway no.9. 193 goes through the hills, it is very quiet and you see rural Taiwan there. This small loop took us the whole day on the scooter. Great day trip, one of the highlights of our trip!
