The unique "PLA Temple" in China is located in Xisha Bay, Chongwu Town, Huian. The temple was built in the picture of a woman who was saved by members of the People's Liberation Army lives in Jinmen, Xiamen. On September 17, 1949, the temple honors 27 PLA martyrs who died in the bombing of the masses by the 84th Division of the 28th Army of the 10th Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

Chongwu ancient walled city is situated in the northern shore of Quanzhou Bay and the west coast of Taiwan Strait. It is the division of the East Chinese Sea and the South Chinese Sea. The city was built as a military base in the beginning of Song Dynasty. A troop with 1000 soldiers was placed to safeguard the City in the beginning of Ming Dynasty and it became a famous town for its military importance and prosperous fishing industry in Qing Dynasty. Today, as a key historic and cultural site, the Chongwu ancient city has been listed by provincial tourist office as the key construction project for tourism and scenic spots.

The Granite City walls are around 2.5km long and average 7m in height. The ancient walled town wall was built in 1387 by the Ming government as a front line defense against Japanese pirates, and it has survived the last 600 years.

Chongwu is also famous for its stone carving. The stone carvings here are of a large variety and with profound meaning that shows the charm of the nature and the history and culture of Chongwu and China. As you enter the Stone Carving Park, you can see the statue of the Hui'an Women with their characteristic, the stone carving skills and exclusive tradition of Huian Women.

What is sad about this place.... is that there is not many of the ancient houses are left standing in the walled city because they have been replaced with modern homes and business and it look like any modern day city but it is nice to see the older Huian ladies still wearing the colourful scarves on their heads and some adorn the straw conical hats.

The walk in the stone carving park takes about 2 to 3 hours and it is 2.5km long. There is a buggy for those who have walking problems to tour the entire park but it runs on the main stretch of road thus preventing closer view of the scattered statues in and around the gardens.

Reading the other reviews was interesting. All the focus seems to be on the rebuilt wall and the stone park outside.
What one needs to do is to walk to the heart of the old town and get lost through the maze of old houses, away from the wall. A lot of old buildings still standing. It was also interesting to see the daily life of the people who live there.
We were lucky to walk into a courtyard to see a group of 80 year old + ladies playing cards. They were dressed very elegantly and wearing nice gold hair decorations.
not sure that it is wrth the detour but for us it was on the way to Fuzhou.
No need to spend money to visit the stone park as the old town is free to visit.

Actually I'd like to rate this place 3.5
Chongwu "ancient town" is designed to lure the Chinese tourist. It's all based on the "ancient" wall which, though not the Great Wall, is rather impressive in it's length of 2.5km and height of 7m. It was built in the 1300s so parts have been rebuilt of course, mostly rough cut sandstone blocks and set without mortar wedged with smaller pieces of stone. The child in me loves forts with walls, towers, turrets and gates but there are just a couple of places to ascend the wall.
It was winter and the Chinese bunker down, so most restaurants were closed. The fishing fleet obviously provides fresh seafood and it summer it would be rather busy I suspect. One especially scenic beach along the walk looks swimmable for good swimmers rather than the family.
A real feature are the stone gardens with literally hundreds of statues, many with a phone number underneath for those that would like a duplicate.
We spent about 3 hours exploring the complex so there's a fair bit to see. Some statues are cheesy such as the Mickey mouse and continual fat Buddha ones but there are more creative ones and themed groups to admire and make a happy snap of. After all the whole area is famous for it's stone work.
For 2 foreigners part of the adventure was getting here from Quanzhou city on local buses and trying to find the right one to go back to the Quanzhou railway station as there are 3 bus terminals. And that could all change tomorrow,

The old town park that you pay to enter is quite scenic but it's just a very badly renovated wal, i.e. it looks to be completely rebuilt. You can't enter the old town from the park, instead you follow the outside of the wall along a pleasant but unexceptional beach. There's alook a small sculpture park of pretty poorly finished statues.

There is nothing to inform you of the history of the place, which made the whole trip very disappointing for me.

From its could see across the other side of the wall, little remains of the old town.

There are a number of restaurants with nice views of the beach serving local seafood.

Chongwu Ancient Town Scenic Area is located in hui'an County in Quanzhou. It is about an hour drive from Quanzhou City and about 2 hours drive from Xiamen.
This scenic area has a long stretch of charming sandy beach . Besides the Old Ancient City Wall, the is a big park of stone carvings of more than 500 pieces.
( Hui'an County is the biggest place for stone engraving in Fujian province). As this scenic areas is a huge place, lots of walking is inevitable though there are electrical car available for a fee.
This is a place very suitable for family outing , lovers' park , beach-goers and local tourists keen in Chinese history. The beach activities should appeal more to overseas tourist than the Ancient City Wall.

My extended family and I were based in Chongwu town to visit our ancestral village which was an hour's drive. Thus we visited the AncientTown because it was handy not really expecting much. There's an old semi restored wall, a story to go with it, and not a lot of old houses. If you are in the area I would recommend no more than a 30minute walk around to get a feel of the community within the walls.

The walls have been entirely rebuilt rather than simply restored, so the original carvings and historical significance has been lost somewhat.

Chongwu is now also very touristy, full of peddlers selling little stone carvings and the like.

Save your time and money, and give chongwu a miss.

Chongwu Ancient Town was built in 1384 to fight against the Japanese pirate. The town is the best-preserved T-shaped stone-walled city in China. The large sculpture park on the narrow strip south of ht fortress between the city wall and the beach. I am very impressed by the remarkable stone carving artwork. Another scene impress me is Hui'an maidens who dressed up the short cyan jackets and skintight black hip huggers and they cover their heads with colorful scarves and conical hats.

The bus ride frorm Quanzhou bus station to Chongwu bus station one way will take 60 - 90 minutes. So count minimum 2 hours each direction, since you have to take a bus to the old town as well (bus 221, 1 RMB). The walls are nice, mostly well kept and the rest newly renovated (or "maintained" as they like to call it here). You can walk on a substantial part of the wall since last Ocotber, but after sometime you get the feeling and it becomes quite boting. There are a couple of interesting temples and traditional ancestral houses in the old town, but basically it is not a special place. We would recommned to spend more time in the old alleys of Quanzhou, which we found to be more interesting and lively.
