Wow! Owning to its scenic beauty I was expecting this location to be crawling with tourists. And having to fight through the swarms trying to be that all important Facebook photo (yawn) Only when we got there at 8 in the morning there would have been only 25 other vehicles in the three major viewing location carparks. All located in a small (approx.1.5 km) area. So, my recommendation is to get there early. This way you can enjoy the scenic beauty as well as the serenity Namibia is famous for. Note: This review is clearly directed towards independent travelers

This Canyon is not the Grand Canyon in the USA, but it can compete with it. I was surprised that so few tourist were there when we visited. If you plan to walk the five-day trial, I suggest not to do this in summer as it can be extremely hot. It was 47 degrees Celsius, when we were there at the bottom of the Canyon.

We say: there should be more than a dozen people in your group with guides, lots of light, best camping gear, lots of dried food and chocolates. We had none of that. We missed the best part as we were not prepared like an expedition. You should. Sunset and sunrise best.

Have just visited the fish river canyon.
There is a cheaper price for south african residents.
From the gate it is quite a drive to get to the actual canyon look out points. The road is not too bad- although we had a 4X4.
Some of the roads between the different look out points are very rocky.
Go to all three look out points - it really is worth it!

Great for sitting down and just letting God's creation impress you. I would sugest to set about 2 hour aside for the viewpoint. Take a snack and just sit, stand and observe.
We drove there in a polo from Grünau. Gravel road was smooth but from Hobas to the viewpoint was a bit rough. I sugest a car with ground clearance but a polo can do it aswell.
Pay attention to the pricelist for entrance fees. It falles under the Ai Ais reserve area.

I spent hours looking at this place having never seen anything like it. Apparently the Grand Canyon is way bigger but this totally had me all day. Sunset was nice there but I preferred the day myself. So quiet.

Better in real than on pictures. Not as colourful as Grand Canyon. Left of the main view point the road is so full of sharp stones that many cars get tire punctures. Drive very slowly! I was there twice: at 10h00 am and at 8h00 am. 10h00 was best because of to much shadows at 8h00.

This hike is a must on anybody's bucket list. What an awesome hike, definitely not a walk in the park, but so worth the preparation for this hike. Beautiful scenery and wild life. A big plus if one gets to glimpse the wild horses in the canyon and any other game. Unspoiled nature and a new experience around each twist in the river.
Best feeling in the world to sleep under the stars in the fresh air. I always ask myself, why am I doing this hike again?!! As soon as I have finished the hike and have recovered from aches and pains, I am ready to do it all over again. The peace and quiet and revival of your spirits is so worthwhile in this crazy world of ours.

Wow the fish river canyon is something to really look at! I am guessing this review is for the outlook point near Hobas. We actually hiked the trail for 5 days and 4 nights (you have to prepare for this and have a permit etc). There is currently a huge draught so no water ! But it’s really a site to be in awe of ! There are hardly any tourists and people about compared to the Grand Canyon. If you’re in the area obviously you have to check it out !

This is one of the must do attractions in Namibia and well worth the visit. We drove to both viewpoints. The second and further viewpoint was our favorite. At the first viewpoint interesting facts are given about the area, the canyon ect. Allow at least 3 hours to take this nature phenomenon all in.

Hallo,

Hello,
here in the forum much is speculated about the Canyon Trail. Hardly anyone writes that he did the tour before. But many who think they have to give their opinion.
Here is a comment from me, I have the Canyon hike already 4 times behind me and on 24.08. I start the 5th time.
The descent into the 550 m deep canyon is steep, slippery (loose boulders) and secured in the upper part with chains on which you can hold on. The descent takes approx. 2 - 2 1/2 hours. On this day, max. 8-10 km because the path is very difficult to walk. Deep sand and partially rocky rocks block the way. Also on the second day the hike is more characterized by rock climbing than by hiking. Only at km 17 at Palm Springs is getting better. Although every now and then rock and climbing passages are there. From the third day the canyon gets wider and the trail is usually good to walk. In the canyon there are four shortcuts that are sometimes hard to find. Since makes a Ortskundiger leader already paid. Those who do not find the way will end up running 15 km more. With a little luck you can also see wild animals, zebras, oryx, kudu, klipspringer and baboons in the canyon. Leopard and hyena we will not see, but they exist. If you arrive at km 80 on the 5th day you still have about 3 hours to Ai-Ais.
If you are interested please contact me. On my website I also have more Information by hornrabe-tours.

Does anyone know if there are any day hikes in the fish canyon area? Unfortunately I don't have the time to do the whole hike! Dates are mid April. Thanks for any replies.

If you stay at Fish River Lodge you can do a half day, full day, or multiple day hike with them. This was the only option I was able to find last August. Pricer but definitely worth it. We are a young couple (late 20s/early 30s) and did the full day hike, but managed to finish around 2PM since we had to leave that evening.

Grazie a quanti mi aiuteranno!!

Hi there, wher is the best place to go from Grunau to view the canyon?
Written 4 July 2017
I'd recommend going to Hobas (you don't have to stay there although it is very peaceful).
We paid 170ND for the two of us to enter the park. The view point is stunning with the morning view of the Canyon being more impressive
