About
Take a glimpse into Brisbane’s past… Wolston Farmhouse, Brisbane’s oldest surviving residential farmhouse, is a nineteenth-century rural gem located a short drive Northwest of the CBD. The historic landmark, previously known as Wolston House, is situated in a rural setting dating back to 1852. It was the first property to be taken care of by the National Trust of Australia (Queensland). The beauty is evident in the oldest surviving residential farmhouse in the district, capturing the ambience of a traditional rural homestead and surrounded by stunning views which stretch down to the tree-lined riverbanks. The Heritage-listed homestead has spacious verandas overlooking the lush green property and gardens. It has six rooms; each room displays a nineteenth-century rural lifestyle with artefacts such as sausage stuffers in the kitchen, silverware in the dining room, a pianola in the parlour and horsehair mattresses in the bedrooms.

Great place to visit, so lnteresting the guide we had was lovely she was dressed in appropriate style for the era
of that time period. Unfortunately I didn't make a mental note of her name, she was very informative. We had the cream tea which was a bit pricey, but enjoyable , staff very friendly. Lovely Surrounding views peaceful except for a motorbike racing around spoiling it and probably frightening all the wildlife.

What a delightful part of our history in such a bucolic setting. The deck where the teas are held is just so lovely and peaceful. The tea and scones are also fabulous.
The guides give an excellent tour of the homestead.
Such friendly and knowledgeable folk!

Having primed ourselves by reading up on the history of Wolston House, my wife and I ventured to visit it on Sunday 28th June 2015.

The place was teeming with volunteers – sweeping, gardening, weeding, cleaning, oiling the timber decking, serving tea, attending to visitors, selling stuff in the store, and so on. As we stepped onto the veranda of the homestead, a volunteer named Murray gave us a brief background to the place and about its previous owners. There were no designated tour guides, and we were free to wander through the rooms leisurely and view the displays at close range. Thankfully, there were no roped-off areas to restrict our movements. Understandably, one of the volunteers was casually ducking in and out keeping a subtle eye on things.

The rooms were tastefully furnished with period decor, ornaments, furniture and drapes, creating an ambience of what life must have been like in the heyday of the homestead. The extensive display included some items like silverware, cutlery, bibles and memorabilia that belonged to the former occupants. The kitchen and laundry contained a plethora of implements, utensils and crockery. The cellars below had various tools and equipment from bygone days. There was even an old water-pump at the back of the premises.

During our visit, we got to chat with another volunteer named Neil, and also had a brief conversation with the caretaker of the premises. My wife and I enjoyed a most pleasant Devonshire tea in the alfresco courtyard. We also purchased mementos and bric-a-brac from the souvenir shop to remember our enjoyable visit.

Wolston House is generally open to the public on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This heritage-listed property is currently owned and managed by the National Trust. We must say that we noticed quite a remarkable transformation since the last time we visited this place in the 1980s.

I would like to be able to review Wolston Farmhouse in a positive light but unfortunately I am unable to. We were due to visit on Saturday 26th February and, owing to the weather conditions that weekend, I phoned the day before to find out if flooding was an issue around Wacol because of the Brisbane river being so close. I was told by the manager of the property that she wasn’t expecting any problems but she would ensure someone phoned us in the morning to update us. We did NOT receive a call. So that we didn’t miss out we had no choice but to chance heading there. I phoned many times during that car ride from the Gold Coast but to no avail. When we arrived there was a ‘closed due to weather’ sign. We wasted time and money on fuel and tolls. I have approached the Wolston Farmhouse management via the National Trust email address and have not received a reply. We are very disappointed by such a poor display of communication but are not surprised because of the lack of consideration shown that day. I had checked my emails before leaving home and was again annoyed when I found out later that day that an email had been sent by them to inform us that the farmhouse was closed but it was sent so late that we had already left home. I’m sure we weren’t the only ones let down that day.

Terrible food and filthy crockery and cutlery. Don’t waste your time or $$ to sit amongst flies and power lines and jails! Tour guides are also rude!!!! No disability access and toilet facilities are filthy

This is a really beautiful historical homestead in Wacol Qld, set in lucious green grounds, its a chance to take a step back to yesteryear, a time to look at days gone bye. A beautiful old tree stands in the grounds, and you can only wonder about the many stories it holds, as with the little house with the tin roof furnished like your grandmothers was, if you are fortunate enough to remember those times. Everything from the cutlery to the china, is all still in place, the bath the old copper washing machine, even the iron on the shelf. Definitley a clear look at history all under one roof.
Wolston house is a wonderful place for a garden wedding with great photo opportunities all aound the house.
On Sundays Wolston house also serves Devonshire teas, (no booking required) and dates through out the year serves High teas, definiltey something a bit different to do if in that area.

I was very disappointed with the quality of food served on sunday after paying $40pp. We left feeling hungry as there wasnt enough food for the 7 people in our group and it looked like leftovers from the day before. This was very upsetting as we were there celabrating a special birthday. We also found the cutlery to be dirty and very little attention to detail.

Wolston House was built in the 1850's and is located a mere 25 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD. My family spent a delightful morning on the Tea Terrace watching the kangaroos and enjoying a scrumptious high tea.
Our favorites were the scones served with lashings of cream and jam, the flavorsome sausage rolls and the lovely sandwiches. My daughter equally enjoyed the gluten free high tea which consisted of delicious scones, a tasty hot feta roll and delectable brownies.
After we strolled around house which is decorated with furnishings consistent the 1930's.
You may visit Wolston House by car or if coming from the Brisbane CBD by catching an Ipswich train and walking three kilometers to the homestead from Wacol station. Much of the land is this area is owned by the government and the walk will take you past the RSPCA, the prisons and Department of Primary Industries land. You almost certainly seeing wild kangaroos on this walk.

Went today with my dad and daughter for high tea and had the tour. The staff were so thoughtful, kind with the best customer service I have seen in a long time. You can see they truly love being there and sharing their knowledge. Love the way the restorations were done with furnished rooms, so much better to see how people would have lived when it was built. Can’t recommend a visit here enough.

Could never visit this place on Sundays as I work until now. It now open through the week so Wednesday I decided to go solo. I stayed for hours and had a fabulous time. The new tearoom is lovely. I had a pot of English Breakfast Tea and homemade pumpkin scones with butter and jam. They were delicious. I sat on the verandah and admired the peace and tranquility. It's $10 entry however if you purchase food/drinks from the Tearoom you don't pay the entry fee. The Farmhouse is just beautiful. The staff are lovely and it's a definite on your must do Brisbane list.
