Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Tha Phae Walking Street turns into a very crowded night market on Sundays evenings. Other than Sunday evenings, the waking street is lined with temples, massage shops, souvenir shops; a pharmacy and food centers tucked away on either side. When it’s not crowded, it’s nice to stroll and take your time and wander into the shops.

We decided to go to the Sunday Market after being recommended by a friend and seeing it mentioned numerous times on websites as a top experience in Chiang Mai.
The stalls looked good selling a variety of crafts with live music along the way, but it was way too busy. There were so many people that it become uncomfortable and we left after just ten minutes.

Starting at Tha Pae Gate and proceeding westward for over a mile - small temporary shops selling crafts, jewelry, clothing and food items. Prices are fair and bargaining is expected, especially for multiple purchases.
In the second block, there are two food courts, one on each side with cheap and delicious foods. The left one is in a wat- about 30 food stalls, with tables to eat and some higher end crafts. Quiet, compared to the street.
We go early and try to look before the crowds come out. It gets very tight and it seems as if everyone is going the opposite way. There is no pedestrian traffic plan. If you see it, buy it, because it’s hard to find things later!

This walking street is a night bazar and takes place in the old city only on Sunday starting at 4pm. It is approximately 1.5 km long. It starts at the Tha Pae Gate and ends at Wat Phra Singh.
During our visit, it was not too crowded. You can find lots of clothes and handicrafts made locally. There are also many food carts.
Definitely worth a visit.

I loved Tha Phae Walking Street as the energy from vendors and shoppers radiate the vibrant streets in Chiang Mai. Around 7-8pm, the crowds can get overwhelming with people and while that makes night markets unique, with very young toddlers it can get overwhelming. The food is remarkable and affordable, the music is blaring and it is loads of fun otherwise and I highly recommend it, but with small children, stick to day markets and weekday night markets.

It was a good experience but it was very busy so best time to go is when it first opens which is 4pm. The market stretched on two roads from both the left and right so I am not exaggerating when I say it was massive. It became repetitive with the stores so I would say haggle and buy the item you want right there rather than looking for it somewhere else as you may get lost.

Tha Phae Walking Street, Chiang Mai
It is the largest walking street in Chiang Mai. There are a lot of products for sale. Walking at night is very fun. There are local souvenirs for sale. There are music shows and small shows on both sides. If you go to Chiang Mai, you have to walk once.

If you are in Chiang Mai make sure you stay on a Sunday evening to visit this amazing massive night market. It goes for ages and cross roads and can find most things you will want. Massage a plenty, souviners and the street food! Come hungry and try many amazing foods.

Has anyone else regretted buying one of the traditional blankets? Mine is still bleeding color after 5 washes.
Written 29 October 2017
My wife thinks that you should be using a product that stabilises the colours and stops them leaching every time you wash. Google “how to stop dye leaking when washing blankets” and there are a series of options for various materials. We had a problem with towels, unfortunately she cannot remember the name of the product she used to stabilise the dye. We never purchase any traditionally dyed products since..

is there a quiet time to go? early afternoon?
Written 28 August 2016
Since it is a "night" market I think it won't be open in the early afternoon. On the other hand, if you go before it opens there also won't be any crowds either.

I would suggest hiring a ride from Grab. Rates are reasonable and you can use the service on demand.
