A Sandy Beach, Giant Fig Trees and Picnic Spots
5.0 of 5 bubblesJan 2022
On its own, Nielsen Park would be a pleasant, although unremarkable spot. What makes it a really special spot is that it sits alongside Shark Beach, a very popular family harbour beach. Together the beach and park make this a perfect area for families and large groups to gather. The park is a great space if you want to escape the sun, kick a ball or have a picnic. Like most Australian beaches, theres no natural shade on the sand, so being able to retreat to the shade under the sprawling fig trees means that you can plan an extended stay at the beach. The park is part of the Sydney Harbour National Park and consists of a large expanse of open, grassy area, covering 20 hectares. There is an avenue of giant, fig trees and large, mature gums are scattered throughout, providing lots of shade. There are good facilities nearby, including clean toilets, changing rooms, outdoor showers and an historic kiosk on the beachfront that sells coffee, ice-creams and fish and chips. For those who want to explore, the Hermitage Foreshore Walking Trail (1.8km one way) starts here. There are also 3 short & easy, looped walking paths. Maps of the walks are shown on a large National Parks board near the Greycliffe Avenue entrance: Glass & Bottle Point Walk (500m loop, 20 min) Historic Greycliffe House Walk (500m loop, 30 min) Mount Trefle Walk (500m loop, 20 min) GETTING THERE: You’ll find free, un-timed parking along Vaucluse and Greycliffe Av. You can pretty reliably get a park mid-week and on overcast days but on a sunny weekend, it can get impossibly busy. Entry to the National Park is free.

Best harbour beach Sydney has to offer. super safe to swim. Great for the whole family, calm clear waters, beautiful outlook, watching the big ships go by. There is a lovely cafe and restaurant for refreshments and also decent bathroom facilities as well as a sprawling park ideal for picnics

This was a beautiful Park that we actually got to experience at first hand last summer= and for the first time. It afforded excellent views of the waters of Sydney Harbour from this Easterly perspective and we were just blown away overall. The Beach itself was superb.

Just a quick note to say the shark net is only up for part of the year. They usually take it down around late April (autumn) and return it in spring.

We visited this park after having been here many years ago. It's still a really lovely spot. It's great for a family picnic and a swim. It's also terrific to come and just relax. It can be nice and quiet especially if you pick a secluded little spot! The water is just right, there is some good sand and plenty of grass to sit down on and trees to provide some shade. In any case the whole area is actually quite beautiful but not very easy to get to on public transport. You will have to use a car.

You can only get to Nielsen Park by driving.. There is only street parking ( the poor residents must hate summer months). If your not there early don’t go you won’t get a park . The beach is good for small children. There is a grassed area to sit on. A Restaurant only opened in the summer months. There is a small cafe too.

Let me lay it on the line and say parking can be difficult at this popular harbour-side swimming spot. The reason is obvious...it really is a great place to spend a day swimming and enjoying what Sydney-siders do best. Take a picnic for a truly relaxing day or you can get take-aways at the kiosk or, better still, treat yourself to lunch in the kiosk restaurant housed in the original stone building. The views out to the harbour with plenty of boating action will keep you gasping in awe at the beauty of Sydney harbour. Just don't forget your sunscreen and hat!

We had a very pleasant stroll through Nielsen Park on a warm day, eventually taken a rest at the Nielsen restaurant.

The beach looked lovely, and I noticed that whilst a lot of it was protected by Shark netting, many people were ignoring this and swimming at the area at the end without this protection.

There were a number of benches available to sit and watch the yachts on the water and the view of the city, and a large group were on the grass having a picnic and what looked to be a birthday celebration. There was also a very large information board at the entrance which was helpful.

Parking is free, although we had to park a little way away from the entrance to the park.

This is a secret part of Sydney, that very few people know about, a little hard to find, a little hard to get too, but once there hard to leave, pack a picnic lunch, a blanket to sit on, and the time to enjoy the view of the Sydney Harbour and this wonderful little park.

I remember my son's walks with me in park and Shark Bay beach ... They are now only memories 38 years later. I miss young son but he does not remember his caring father. The park walk is a past discovery and how the rich English landlords brought from their distant Empire to dominate their new colony with cheap convict labor.

We went to the cafe at about 2pm to get some lunch and they had run out of everything except fish and chips. Would have expected them to be more prepared for the crowds since it is summer holidays. The cafe was busy and chaotic and there was no line system so it took us a while to work out where to order and who was next. I’m a vegetarian so I wanted some chips and my boyfriend wanted some fish. We asked for fish and chips but could they be put in separate boxes...not a big request! The young aussie guy serving us seemed to thing so and said ‘Not today, sorry’ . My reaction was ‘Seriously?’ and he said ‘Faaarrk!’ and screwed up the paper and wrote two separate orders. He didnt acknowledge that he had rectified the situation or that he sweared and proceeded to take our payment as if nothing that happened. It was bizarre! He then moved to the other side of the counter away from where my boyfriend and I were waiting, possibly to get away from us as he was embarassed/worried we would say something. I was in shock otherwise would have complained then and there . The older guy serving the food who might have been the manager seemed lovely so it was a shame that the bad customer service of one fool ruined the whole experience. I appreciate they were busy but there was six staff on and they were only serving fish and chips and drinks. The chips were horrible but my boyfriend said the fish was nice. I guess you dont expect much for a beachside kiosk but it put a dampener on the day and when I do return to Neilsen Park, I’ll be bringing a picnic! Apart from that, nice beach but crowded and lots of kids so don't go there if you want to relax and read a book.
