Starting by booking tickets for the boat: no English no guidance and extremely difficult to pass through the paperwork that you need to be filled up. Many questions asked where you go, how long you stay,....
The Island: Clear water but once you rent a motorbike there, you start to notice that there is a huge concrete wall blocking the view from the road to the beach.
Hotels and services : very poor services even the only 4 star hotel. No English at all.
Conclusion: As YouTuber and traveler, I strong advise you guys to pick up another better destination. Do not waste your time there. You can check my video in YouTube tuga in Vietnam.

The place would be in my top priority to visit second time. This island still kept the nature landscapes and culture. I did love wide life here: sea food, local people and scuba diving activities are great. Enviroment is plus point for consideration if you want to choose somewhere to enjoy three days trip.
Amazing view from top of Thoi Loi mountain and mistery inside Hang Temple. Just disapointed To Vo gate, it was not too big and brilliant as I saw on instagram, only for selfie is nice.
The most of hostels and homestays were be nice and over expectation.

We stayed overnight here and really enjoyed a break from the crowds. The landscape is nice and the beaches and headland stunning. Crystal clear water that I have not seen elsewhere in Vietnam. They grow garlic EVERYWHERE !!

This place was actually awesome on these conditions:
- don't expect any English, just escape your language for a while, it's actually really freeing
- rent a motorbike and explore the entire island, even dirt and sandy lanes and roads (but not unsafe)
- book a hotel close to the port (this is where it all happens during the night
OK, now these are out of the way, the island is a really great departure from mainland Vietnam and almost has no western tourist market. We encountered 2 in our 5 days here. People are genuinely lovely and inquisitive and will make an effort to make you feel welcome but don't expect them to speak English, you ARE in Vietnam remember and this island is a real community feel on that level.
The hotels are basic but there are some more up market ones open or opening but you're more than welcome to inspect them before you put your money down. We didn't have any issues finding somewhere off the port, there are 5 or 6 within 100m.
The best area at night is near the port about 100m back and features a little intersection with fresh cooked seafood restaurants, the prices are fair and not inflated for westerners from what we could see others paying for like meals. You choose your seafood and they cook it for you. A little rice vendor is close by who services the two main restaurants. You can't miss the big tables of seafood. They have some pretty interesting stuff and a wife variety to choose from. It's fresh, caught that day.
The best guide to the island is the 'Travel Fish' page which comes up in Google but for us the best advice is to pre-download the Google maps in satellite mode so you can see the terrain and explore the island. We paid 100k a day for an automatic motorbike with a full tank from our hotel. Hang Cove (the beach in the cave) is by far the best swimming spot. We went every day at some point, it's over near the highest point flag and there's a little drinks vendor near the entrance who is super lovely!
The port to leave from to get here is 'Sa Ky' although keep in mind that the crossings are limited and seats are booked out quickly. Get someone Vietnamese to reserve you tickets via the details listed in the 'Travel Fish' page and you'll be fine, 115k per way and an easy trip although you might need to get some air as Vietnamese seem to get quite sea sick on our numerous boat experiences here ;)
Enjoy, be local and don't expect to be waited on like tourists are in most places in the world, you're a guest in their wonderful little community!!!

We were three driving on 2 motorbikes from Da Nang to Sa Ky port in Quang Ngai province.
The ferry's schedule is in the morning only, at 7am and 8am. A round trip costs $10usd and it takes 1.5 hrs to reach the Ly Son island. The accommodations here are limited, since they've just have the electricity a year ago. You may stay in a hotel, $15 per night with double bed or homestay is also a good choice to experience local life style, approximately $4 per person per night.
Within a day, you may explore all destinations in the main island and I highly recommend to travel by motorbikes, $5 per day, even though taxi or motorbike taxi is available. During night time, there are just some seafood street shops and coffee shops near the port. I prefer go sleep early and get up early in the morning to catch the sun rise, it is spectacular.
Next day, if you wanna explore the small island, you're supposed to be at the port at 7am. The round trip costs $3 and the last departure from the small island back to the main on is at 2pm. Go sightseeing, swimming and coral reef snorkeling are prominent recreation here. Food and drinks are available but not many options.
In my trip, I spent 1 and half day to camp on the shore of this small island. Since, people haven't been exploited much, the natural beauties are preserved. It was the unforgettable experience, our local tour guide showed us the night hunting as we snorkeled only with glasses and arrow guns. We prepared food naturally on shore and enjoy talking around the fire camp.
The third day, we headed back the main island and booked our tickets back to the mainland. The ferry departs at 1pm.
In spite of the less developed tourist accommodation and facilities, we enjoy its outback. Hopefully, for the next trip we'll see a tourist paradise island.

Ly Son island has been made famous around Vietnam for its Garlic farming and export! and if you stay in a hotel and a room above the rooftops of residential housing it is stunning top see the rooftops covered in drying garlic! its port is also a hive of activity and also a stunning site when the fishing vessels come in with their latest hauls of sardines which amazingly covers the dock and surrounding area up to 1 foot deep of freshly caught sardines, if the strong scent of fish is not your thing i would suggest only go to the dock if it is a must!
the island is not really a hotspot for tourists but it hosts something that truely is breath taking! Thoi Loi Mountain! MY OH MY! hire yourself a scooter, with that you can take a sightseeing ride around the shoreline to the top of the mountain with 360degree stunning views of Ly Son! there is so much to see up there so be sure to ride around the paved roads up there to experience EVERYTHING! from the top youll see a WATER FILLED CRATER, TOWNS, OPEN OCEAN WITH STUNNING SURF, A WATERFALL! YES A WATERFALL THAT FALLS INTO THE OCEAN, AND ENDLESS MAGIC PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES!
one thing i will tell you though is there is a vietnamese military base also on top of the mountain so be careful not towander onto the site, it is clearly marked!
there are also other tourist sights around, the best advise is jump on a scooter and just follow the shorelines , you will find everything plus more!
(back to about the military base haha me and my partner were very adventurous and climbed to the top of the mountain from the an old couples garlic farm which is of the track and most would not think to go there, we got to the top and took some breath taking photos before we were seen by some soldiers! we moved along pretty quickly and had a laugh about it as we rode away hahaha)
all in all if your an avid photographer or love to venture to places not really on the map i recommend you have a look! it is a very basic island and has only had power a short time, there are no big resorts or restaurants so a perfect opportunity to try the local foods, i would say a 3 day 2 night stay is sufficient!

First of all, the island does have a few beautiful spots and it was amazing to see and taste all the local fish and especially the delicious garlic that grows all over the island. The water is beautiful and the sunsets are stunning.
Now that's out of the way, I'll say why we wouldn't go again but hopefully my reasons will help anyone wishing to visit.
I understand tourism to the island is a very new thing and as such the information available on the jnternet is very limited and threadbare. This meant arranging to get there was a stressful nightmare. We came from Da Nang by train to Quang Ngai and I had read that you can get a bus from the bus station to Sa Ky port. I looked at Google maps and found there were several bus stations and decided to go with my gut and get a taxi to the bus station in the east of the city, closest to the port. This turned out to be wrong as it was a private commercial bus company with no buses going to Sa Ky. The taxi fare was 63,000 VND by this point already but in our desperation and with nobody in the area speaking any English, we decided to have the taxi take us all the way to the port. This cost a further 230,000 VND. On the way back it was much easier because there is only one bus pick up point to go back to Quang Ngai. If your arrive at Quang Ngai and intend to get the bus, you should look for a green bus with a number 3 in the windscreen. Ask around for where it picks up because I can only tell you where it dropped us off on the return trip.
Once there we worried about getting a ticket as the times for the ferries listed online were around 8am and 1pm. We got there at 11am and asked for tickets and the lady told us to come back at 1pm to book tickets for the 3pm boat, so don't worry if you're not there super early. We got some food in the food court and had a couple of coffees while we waited but then at 1pm when we went to to get the tickets we were told the ferry was at 1:30. Glad at not having to wait another two hours we got our tickets and left.
On the island there are quite a few hotels and homestays. Online we only found one hotel through any major booking website and it was out of our price range (being extremely limited budget travellers) and all other hotels listed online were on vietnamese websites and had only telephone numbers and nobody at the other end of the line spoke English.
Luckily there were hordes of women waiting at the pier to offer their cards and take us to their homestays. One lady offered a room for 150,000 a night, which seems like a reasonable price to us so we took it. The room was nice, the family were pleasant but spoke absolutely no English, and there was no wifi. All the coffee shops have wifi though so that wasn't an issue.
We don't expect that around the world we are entitled to speak to local people in English, but the fact that not a single person on the island has any basic English does make life difficult. We communicated awkwardly through Google translate and even with the vietnamese keyboard most people found it hard or weren't comfortable with the technology to be able to answer us efficiently. This made a majority of our dealings with local people very stressful and even so much as discussing whether we would eat with the family or go to a restaurant turned into a 45 minute debacle.
As I said, we don't expect the world to speak English just because we don't know how to speak their language, but try as we might, vietnamese is an incredibly difficult language to grasp and so we felt very much alone while we were there.
The island was nice, the weather was nice and for what limited interaction we had all the people were very friendly as well, but compared to islands like Koh Rong in Cambodia and others we have visited, Ly Son is so small and has so little to offer that we wouldn't consider going back.
I would still recommend people go and check it out for its good points, especially if you are more confident communicators than we are. I hope this provides all the information that we would have liked to know before we went. Also, another reviewer said you only need 2 or 3 days there and I would totally agree. Beyond two days you'd really run out of things to do. The beaches have no sand, only volcanic rock, so spending a few days relaxing on the beach is not an option.

We had wonderful trip in here with lot of experiences.
About transfer
We are group with 15 members, taking flight from Hanoi to ChuLai (you can make flight tickets of Vietnamairlines) and just 01 hour for flight and landing ChuLai Airport.
Then catch Taxi for transfer from Airport to Sa Ky Boat Station (almost one hour for moving).
The next step, buy Boat tickets to come Ly Son. Just about 5 us$/ticket/pax. Transfer just one hour.
The most thing to do in Ly Son Island
1. Rental a car/motorcycle/tuk tuk for visiting Large Island.
2. Visit Cau Cave, Hang Pagoda, To Vo Gate, Lonely Rock
3. Taking Seafood nearby Beach, the famous seafood you should try is The King Crabs - really nice ^^
4. Rental speed boat to go to Small Island and swimming.
5. Trying the Lonely Garlic - the one of famous Garlic in Vietnam.
Hotel
Cause of newly island with a little bit service, just have 02 Hotels with 3 stars standard you can try
1. Central Ly Son Hotel
2. Muong Thanh Ly Son Hotel (will be available in May 2016)
To take beautiful trip, you should take 3 nights in here enough for all.
Hope you guys get really excited.
Best Regard,

If you have google translate and google maps to show the people you need information from its really not that difficult to be understood. The 1st ferry over is usually booked out day before via their email. We arrived at 7.15 and eventually got on the 11.00am service. Boats go depending on demand. The ticket will have your seat number on it and the boats can feel overwhelmingly stuffy so seasickness is common. Return tickets are no issue as they can be bought by your hotel you stay at.
On the island english is limited we were extremely lucky our hotel understood us. We were told only 3 foreigners on average come here a week. In May to September 300 people come and go everyday and many wealthier Vietnamese families with many wanting to practice their english on us. Finding an english speaker especially on weekends is not too difficult. Just arrive as we did with no booking as there are literally dozens of hotels and Nga Nghi's walking distance from the ferry. Be very careful not to accept the 1st offers of a hotel or homestay at the jetty when you arrive. Politely say no and go around yourself to check them out I would recommend look left from the ferries and this is where most good quality places...cheap are located. No need to register with the local police as your hotel will register you on arrival. A couple of my photos were taken from our balcony on 3rd floor at $15 per night..awesome value..good bathroom with a kettle and the owners let us use their fridge. Western food is not available here so we ate rice with milk and fruit for breakfast. No store here sells anything other than what you would find in traditional style Vietnamese stores. Although we were impressed that they had yogurt and icecreams. Dont worry if you need a pharmacy/drug store there are 3 on the island. Our budget of $25 a day was easy to stick to including mamy 60 cent beers. Oh yes apart from bahn xeo (pancake) the food is non existent after about 12noon until 5pm. Motorbikes available to rent and a short ride to Hang Cau on the eastern side of the island has a nice sandy beach with just ok swimming. We originally planned for 3 nights but stayed 10. Yes as others have said not much here but we were looking for a place away from usual tourists. Well...we found it and the people here are amazing. We were overwhelmed by their generosity friendliness and sincerity. We were asked to join them for a meal..drinks and at no cost which was totally unexpected and difficult for us to accept...and also asked impromptu to join karaoke and even one afternoon asked by the father of a bride to join their wedding!!! When we checked out of our hotel the owners didnt charge us for 2 days motorbike hire and..gave us a bag of prized garlic to take with us...wow. So dont come if you want the touristy stuff or great swimming . Do come if you want to experience the real vietnam before its all gone.

I recently completed a trip to Ly Son Island and was appalled at the level of litter and rubbish that is spoiling the island. The far side of the island has some nice beaches and caves but the amount of litter scatted on the seashore and pathways is very bad. This problem needs to be addressed to attract foreign tourist. They will not come here if rubbish of all kinds, plastic bottles, paper, polystyrene are just thrown into the streets and eventually finds its way into the ocean. The harbour where the ferry leaves from is very bad as well. The beaches are full of rubbish washed up on the high tide. The rural hinterlands of the island are beautiful with cultivated fields of garlic and onions but to me the scatted rubbish spoils everything.

Also is there a direct transfer from Chu Lai airport to Cang Sa Ky and return?

Can you guys recommend me some great hotels/ homestays to stay for 3 nights? I'm not really sure about the accommodation conditions in the island.

Binh Yen hotel is a good budget hotel. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s right by the Pier where the boats are. Also close to the restaurants and one of the main attractions (cong to vo ~ 15 min walk)
