Natural monument in Georgia, located in the village of Gordi of Khoni municipality, in the vicinity of the river okatse. It is uniquely located in the unbelievably deep and narrow ravine. Okace's canyon is 3 to 6 meters wide and 20 to 100 meters deep. Along the canyon several waterfalls could be found, height of one it is 70 meters. They get pleasure from this beautiful nature and at the same time drink vodka (Chkutini) made from local wild pear.

Here are 2 different options: waterfall and canyon. I visited the last one. Canyon trail, which means walking along the canyon on the hanging iron construction ^_^ Before you get there, right after the cashier you head in the forest (Dadiani forest) - very beautiful and calm.. with paved path.. it takes 30-40 minutes. After that you start the canyon part and it is more interesting and impressive once under the feet you just have the iron meshwork.. I was there in August and it was very hot.. So I think that it is better to visit the place from the end of September till April.. The views will be better, I guess..
After finishing the trail, there are local drivers and driving back is really good idea, once walking distance is too long...

Drive to the Visitor Center where you can buy your ticket. In the parking lot taxi drivers will find you. I do not recommend to drive to the canyon with a regular 4x4 SUV and normal tires. The taxis have all terrain tires and they are higher and narrower than a regular SUV - which is very much needed because the road has sharp turns with big level differences and sharp stones. Extremely bumpy road with no signs at all and lot of different ways. It needs offroad driving skills. The taxi driver offered us 150 lari first, very high price. At the end we got the trip for 4 people for 80 lari to drive us to the canyon and back. The canyon has lot of stairs and goes above the trees. Might be hard if you have fear of hights. The canyon looks very similar to the road to Mestia, green hills everywhere, lot of trees and you can barely see the river from the distance, the sight is often blocked by the crown of the trees. Nothing special.

We enjoyed ourself at the canyon
Here is what I recommend
At visitor center buy tickets (use free bathroom)
Walk 2km to the bridge (easy mostly downhill on a paved walkway) it was mostly shaded and there is another toilet at the end but it’s squat toilet . This section took us 40 min but we walk slow so average person probably 30.
Once on the bridge you will have to show your ticket so don’t lose those! You will go down many steps. Then it will take about 20 min stopping and taking pictures to get to the part that sticks out over canyon . Half way there are several steps to go up and then at the end another 7-8 stories worth of steps
The steps are even and the handrails are strong and supportive
Once you leave I would suggest getting a ride back to the visitor center. In 2019 the price was 30gel but the first guy came at me with 80gel. I had read several reviews that the going rate these days is around 50gel. I said no 50 gel. He said 60 I said no 50 and he said ok 50. This is about $18 for a 2 mile ride for 3 of us so think it’s more than fair.
The entire experience took us 2.5 hours but we are slow walkers who take lots of pictures. Walking back would of took much longer as it’s pretty much all uphill
I suggest going early to beat the heat and crowds
I didn’t see anyone selling water or snacks on the way but there was a restaurant at the end . There were several benches on the first section but on the walkway I only saw benches at the end where it juts out

This is a long narrow and deep canyon offering great views and waterfalls. Its highlight is a viewpoint hanging over the canyon. However, it requires a long and strenuous hike from the entrance and a lot of climbing up and down to get to the viewpoint.
You can pay for a 4x4 ride part of the way. However, you still need to walk the final stretch over steel walkways to reach the viewpoint and then climb back to the top of the walkway. It is very strenuous especially in hot weather. So visit in the cooler months or in the early morning or evening to avoid the heat.

Beautiful once you get there but getting there is a challenge. The taxi mafia is waiting to charge you a bomb to get there and back even though it’s a short ride for them but walking is so tiring especially doing it twice going and coming back. If only there was a fixed government vehicle going there at a reasonable price it would be worth it. Suggest Martvili instead unless you enjoy long hikes or don’t mind spending the money on a taxi - they started by asking for 150 Lari! Even if we could bargain I don’t think they’ll go for less than 90 or 100

Directions to the visitor center and buy the ticket there. Now the drivers waiting outside the Visitor Center will urge you to drive to the entrance of Okatse Canyon because the 7km path is arduous and steep.
Is the driver worth it and how much does it cost?
We chose the driver because it was 35 degrees hot. First there was haggling over the price of the ride. Had agreed on 10€ per person (30 GEL), retrospectively too expensive and would also have been possible for less.
The ride first leads through a very beautiful, easily hikeable and shady forest-meadow landscape and we thought we should have run that. After a short time we went downhill (really very steep) over less beautiful asphalt roads (and uphill again on the way back). After all, we were happy not to have to walk this unattractive path in these temperatures.
BUT: you can drive your own car directly in front of the entrance of the canyon and save yourself the driving service (tickets must be picked up in front of the Visitor Center). From the Visitor Center take the “main” road again about 700m to the sign on the left “Heart of the Mountain Hotel”, turn there towards the hotel and from the hotel drive 2.1km the asphalt road to the Canyon viewpoint entrance (enough parking available)
The canyon walk itself is beautifully done with nice views, best come in the morning to bypass tourist crowds. You should be dizzy, because you look through the bars into the gorge. All in all a nice excursion with many other hiking opportunities in the area.

Definitely worth a visit. Beauty, altitude, walking over the abyss. The canyon itself from the visitor centre is 2.5 km away. There is an option of lift by local taxi drivers (not cheap), you can walk. We walked back and forth. The road is mostly through the woods, but it's going to be harder back uphill. However, nothing super complicated, again, you need to walk eaten khinkali ))).

I like proper hikes much more but as this was at the end of our Georgian trip and we were getting a little bit tired, it was an OK experience for our final day. And our kids liked it a lot.
We drove all approx. 2,5 km from the visitor center to the canyon by our rented 4x4 Toyota Hilux. It wasn´t an easy road but if you´re an experienced driver and have 4x4, you can do it. Don´t get discouraged by local taxi drivers who will try to persuade you that you´ll be in a big trouble.
And for those who are scared of heights: I am, too but could do it without bigger problems :-)

We, a group of 18 pax from Malaysia and Singapore from Yongo tour came here on our way to Mestia
The canyon and the metal wire broadwalk was not impressive. All we see were trees with occasional glimpses of the river below.
Incidentally the broadwalk is ONE way and were not allowed to go back to collect our walking sticks we left 1/2 way on the route.
The pathway to the canyon walk can be scorching hot even in late summer morning.

If you are any way mobile skip the 4x4 drivers waiting outside and take the walk down to the canyon. It is a lovely well-laid out path through some nice forest. If you don't fancy the walk back then the drivers are waiting the other end as well anyway.
The views are good, although if you have been to Svaneti then you won't be that impressed!
If you are a bit freaked out with the walkway then it is good to know that it is one way so you won't ever have people coming towards you and you won't have move out of the way.
Worth remembering that it closes in wet weather so maybe check before driving all the way out.

Is not other place; is the same canyon. You have the choice to do the standar version (wich includes the walk arround in those pasarels) or either pay for sport activities like those in the pictures.

Hi, I was planning on travelling to Kutaisi on the 22nd of December and i was wondering whether it would be safe to go to the Okatse Canyon and the Kinchkha waterfalls during my days there?
