Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Amazing what nature can do!!
This is a really nice stop in your way from Biskra to Batna (or viceversa). Breathtaking gigantic canyon with millions of palm trees. Again... few tourists! (if any!)

It was amazing
The views and the mountains all around
There’s echoes when you talk loud
It’s really mysterious and sublime
Really you must go there if you around

My driver took me on a long loop around the area from Batna. Ghoufi was one of the stops along the way. I was not impressed. There are a lot of steps down to the river bottom then lots of steps up to the commune. To get back to the car, the steps back up seemed never ending. Do NOT do this in hot weather or at least take a ridiculous amount of water and go slow. I took 2 liters of water and I ran out about half way back up to the souvenir shops and parking (I took 2 liters of water and shared with some people who took no water). My guide, who was 20 years younger than me, had to stop part of the way down to the river because the steps were so uneven and wait for me. The uneven steps aggravated his bad knees, so beware if you have any foot, ankle, knee or hip problems. This sight would be more interesting at dawn/dusk. In early afternoon the light was flat and the rock colors were muddy.

Abandoned Berber houses are at the top of the steps just below the parking. Take a look, as the historic mud dwellings are sinking back into the earth.

The souvenirs were generally lots of cheap Chinese made stuff to a few poorly made carpets.

Do buy either the number 2 or number 3 tea if it is available, plus a cone of roasted peanuts from the roadside vendors. All are excellent. According to my guide, tea is ranked according to strength. The further south you go in Algeria, the stronger the tea, from fry your mouth with tannin strong to just really strong up north. The amount of sugar added makes the numbers 1, 2, and 3 teas palatable. You are only purchasing about 3 ozs of tea, so if you can't take the really strong, really sweet stuff then you aren't out a lot of money and you help support the locals. I do not normally like sweetened tea, but in Algeria all three grades were excellent.

Take care walking down the road if you want to take photos of the village terraced gardens just beyond the commune. I had to keep crossing back and forth to walk on the wider sections of terrain next to the road. Drivers, are not cautious in Algeria and tend to be inpatient.

You will definitely enjoy the stunning views of the canyon, on a safe stairways you can get to the bottom down the river. The view is amazing from above and even from below.

Magnificent place full of history. Very pleasant walk in the canyon and through the old dwellings.
Unfortunately the site is disgusting as is often the case in Algeria, plastic bottles, cans of tuna and other waste spoil this priceless heritage...
