Scotties Rentals has cost effective rental cars in New Zealand with offices in Queenstown, Christchurch, Auckland Airport and Auckland City. We have a range of cars including SUV, Sedans, hatch, estate, minivans or people movers and trucks. We can arrange campers also. We do have a range of older cars as well that we keep to offer a cost effective option that we feel are also more environmentally friendly compared to using all new cars. All our ranges are well serviced by our mechanics to ensure optimal full efficiency and safety. Our friendly staff are only to happy to help with planning and road safety advice during your trip

A terrible experience. Avoid Scotties at all costs! Car was filthy inside and out, had over 177,000 and BROKE DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY TO THE AIRPORT. Keith told us many false statements during pick up and coerced us to buy unnecessary additional insurance. We sought reimbursement of tow truck costs at checkin, but were told my Ami that "no managers were available but someone would get back to us". No one did. This place is a scam - GO ELSEWHERE!

We had a confirmed booking made over three months in advance with Scotties Queenstown via Carwiz.
The night before we flew out to New Zealand I got an email saying to call them, with no other details. When I called them they said they had "no cars" and couldn't tell me earlier because they "couldn't find my email address".
The best they could do was offer to rent me an SUV at more than double the price of my original booking. So I was stuck with no car and no chance to book another one somewhere else at such short notice as everything in Queenstown was booked out. (A cynic might say they had realised this too, and cancelled my advance booking in order to rent my car to someone prepared to pay more money at short notice.)
I would not recommend this outfit.

Don't hire from them. Just don't. You will waste your time and in the end have to hire from someone else.
1) Car delayed multiple times despite assurances that "it's already there, just don't know where it is".
2) If you don't take the extremely large damage waiver fee, they put a hold on your credit car for $5000. Most reputable companies place a hold of $300-500, at most $1000. $5000 is going to max many people's credit cards.

September-2022 I was charged 1029.57 NZD for a rental car we never touched. Scotties isnt answering any phones, emails, or requests. I have emailed annie@scotties.co.nz multiple times since September. This is FRAUD

Never before have I been so traumatised dealing with a staff member from Scotties.
I spoke to Brian on the phone to arrange a pick up when I arrived in Queenstown airport. He was very rude and condescending.
He said I haven't filled out "check-in" form that they've apparently emailed me. I explained that I never got the email but he kept talking over me & argued that they've sent it. I gave my email address again and he says my email was too difficult to write. How is this my problem?
All my contact info was provided in the original booking, maybe he should have checked it.
After waiting for >45 mins Christian came & picked us up to their office. He was nice and apologetic, but Brian doesn't work at the same office.
In my experience, the rental company picks up the customer and go to their office and do the paper work.
I understand they're short staffed, but the rudeness from Brian is unforgivable.
No one should ever experience the rudeness and incompetency from Brian who hasn't a clue of what customer service is.
It's not the impression you'd want of NZ.
Avoid this company if you want a pleasant experience.

Scotties/NU Car rental didn't charge the quoted amount.
After waiting nearly an hour in an empty lobby for them to handle our reservation we were hit in hundreds of USD in fees and charges.
1) Instead of $NZ like our online booking, it was showing several hundred $USD more on our receipt. They said it was due to currency exchange BS.
2) Insurance - They insisted that it was required and that our credit card Chase Sapphire Reserve would NOT qualify even though it included an insurance policy that paid more than what they offered. Our options were to get their insurance OR use "third party insurance" which included an "insurance" fee in case our third party insurance was fraudulent.
3) We were also charged for the shuttle transfer even though it should have been free and we tipped our driver.
4) The car we received...the infotainment system that controlled everything including climate was in JAPANESE. It had no other option to change the language and we were told to just memorize which digital buttons did what.
Unfortunately we were already late for the days activities and were forced to keep the reservation that we had made months in advance because of this- A CANCELATION FEE
We will be complaining with our credit card over these extra charges. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to add extra charges to the bill after the return.
AVOID!!!!

When wanting to travel to the Milford track and back from Queenstown, we found Scotties Rental Cars to be a good option. There service was good and prices reasonable.
