Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The circular itinerary, which we followed in the reserve, starting and returning to the village of Cantagallo, is a classic of hiking in the reserve itself. It consists of climbing along the Italian Alpine Club path no. 36, until you reach the Cerliano bivouac; from there continue almost flat along path no. 36A up to the “Cascina Le Cave” shelter, finally from there, always on path 36A, flat in the first section, then with a steep descent, return to Cantagallo.
The route is quite well signposted. Obviously those who have GPS software will be further free from uncertainty. It extends for a little less than 7 km and involves a difference in altitude of 360 meters both uphill and downhill.
A stop to eat your packed lunch at the bivouac or shelter is advisable.
We did this route on a beautiful day at the end of May, and we recommend it in this season, for the beautiful blooms of broom and other flowers. However, it can also be tackled in the height of summer, because the route is almost always shaded.
Personally, I found the uphill route along itinerary 36 more attractive. Here you cross large sectors already used for the cultivation of fruit chestnut groves: the chestnut trees were originally arranged at low density (from 100 to 130 per ha.), to allow the foliage to expand, and the ground was kept clear to facilitate the harvesting of chestnuts. But in this stretch today the chestnut trees appear abandoned since decades: many have collapsed to the ground; others, left to grow spontaneously, have developed bizarre shapes.
The only two important buildings found on the route, Cerliano and Cascina Le Cave, were in the past peasant homes, mainly oriented towards the cultivation of chestnut trees and sheep breeding. Abandoned since the 1950s, they were then restored by the Tuscany Region and are now intended for leisure activities.
In the last part of the circular route, the one that returns to Cantagallo, the dense array of signs on the various tree species encountered is notable: which constitutes a real "botanical route". Unfortunately the signs are only in Italian. Furthermore, some of them were damaged by the weather and not replaced.
Overall, however, I find this hiking bike advisable.
