Fun place to visit! Lots of elk to see and old historic buildings and houses. The road into Cataloochee Valley is the same road you take back out. The roads are twisty but makes for an awesome adventure ride. The road can be narrow and...More

This is Appalachia. The old roads, beautiful views, two/one lane roads. Everything about this experience exemplifies the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trails and roads are very well kept. The campground is really one of the best I’ve ever stayed in. I can’t wait...More

The drive is not for the faint of heart, but when you get down to the valley it's amazing. Spotted 12-15 elk and several turkey. Not sure we'll ever go back again, but I'm sure glad we went there once!

If you are not used to driving extremely curved, bumpy, narrow roads, then this is not for you. We are from Florida and it's our first time in the mountains so this was a huge fright for us. We didn't expect the road to be...More

Went with the purpose of seeing the Elk and we were NOT disappointed. The ride in is interesting and you have to allow plenty of time because the road is really curvy and has drop offs. If you like to avoid the crowds of Cades...More

This is for sure and out-of-the-way destination in GSMNP. It takes a good 2.5 hours from Pigeon Forge (that means 2.5 hrs. back!) with a narrow winding road the last bit of the way (bad). Because of that, there is hardly anyone there (good). Very...More

We rode for miles on a dirt curving road, rough in some places. We wanted to see the elks or something. The only thing we found was an empty house in the middle of no where. After our sad ride we had to go back...More

Such an awestruck view from the Cataloochee valley overlook. Drive to this place can be quite challenging for amateur drivers. Not at all recommended after dark. Very few parking are available but so is the number of visitor I guess. We found only 5 people...More

This valley is part of the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, but can only be entered from the eastern side in Waynesville. The road in is an adventure in itself...dirt, single lane and dusty. BUT, worth the trip. When the valley was acquired by the...More
