This is a nice place to watch when you are at Bidar. The best way to explore this place is to ask for the watchman to guide. Either he or he will arrange somebody for guide. He will speak the history.
Tomb of Ahmed Shah-al-Wali Bahamani
Ahmad Shah, a liberal ruler was the ninth king and ruled for 13 years. The tallness of the tomb is 107' and 9" and it is built on a square plan, each side measuring 77' and 1'. The artistic device of giving a white outline to make subjects more prominent has been employed here.

Most of the inscriptions are texts of Sufi doctrines and the workmanship is of Persian artisans. Tomb of Sultana Ahmed Shah's wife is much smaller. Traces of paintings are just visible. Tomb of Ahmed Shah's sons to the south of Ahmed Shah's Tomb are rather ordinary.

Tomb of Sultan Allauddin Shah II
Allauddin was a refined prince who built his tomb during his lifetime. When completed it must have glittered like a gem with all its outer walls covered with tile work, remnants of which can still be seen.
The flat appearance of the walls is livened up by carved black stone margins enclosing the decorations in tiles. The original paintings in the interior have vanished and the dimensions are almost the same as those of the tomb of Ahmed Shah.

Tomb of Sultan Himayun
According to local belief as Humayun was a unkind ruler, lightening struck his tomb and the dome is till this day split open. This cross section of the building should interest architects as the construction styles are dissimilar from those of the other tombs. Specimens of the 'spongy bricks' used may be seen.
Please provide tip to the guy. This is a holy place to watch.
Request all of you to maintain peace and please refrain writing xxx loves yyy on the wall.

Like-History and sculpture of the tomb. The interior has well-preserved paintings. On the outside are high-quality carvings in granite with the walls decorations are in gold and various other colours and are a good example of medieval Muslim art.
Dislike- Could have been a good tourist place. AIS is trying to maintain. But a proper toilet could have been better to start with

The Bahmani sultans' tombs lie close to the tomb of Khalil Ullah, who relocated from Persia to become the spiritual advisor to Ahmed Shah Wali, who moved the capital from Gulbarga to Bidar. The Bahmanid kingdom (1347-1528) was the greatest center of Persian culture in India, and the finest specimen of Persian art is not in the Bidar fort, but in Ahmed Shah Wali's tomb. The interior walls and dome are painted with stunning designs and calligraphy, including 2 genealogies of Khalil Ullah on the dome. The tombs are about 4 km outside the city of Bidar. Hire an Incredible India guide, who can give you the history and facilitate access to the tombs and also locked areas of the fort. Bidar is about 120 km from Hyderabad. Pack lunches and bring water.

Go here around twilight, dusk. The tombs take on a different charm at the dying light of day. Most of the structures remain under lock and key for security reason. A couple of the tombs have curved roofs, one has blue tiled work still visible. There is one structure which has only 1 and a half walls standing, its quite evocative.

The Bahmani tombs are a must see when visiting Bidar, they are simply spectacular. you can hire bikes in town, hire an auto or as we did walk the 4 km from Bidar to the tombs. The first structure has been heavily renovated since I was last there which was in 2006 when I lived in Bidar for sometime, but the other tombs are huge and reflect the one rich and powerful heritage of Bidar. When I was in Bidar we saw few Western people and I think these tombs may possibly be overlooked by visitors, but take the time out to see them.

A guide meets you at the gate who claims to be the direct descendant of the Bahamani Dynasty. He will show the monuments with half real & half cooked up stories & improper facts. I know this as I am a avid reader of history. The tomb of the Ahmed Shah Wali is the most important with biggest dome, intricate paintings on the walls & ceiling and perfect geometry in construction. His dargah is revered by both Muslims & Hindus as a saintly king. He had ruled for a short period of 13 years during which time he shifted his capital from Gulbarga to Bidar. Due to his nature of allowing Hinduism to coexist at that time he was thought to be reincarnation of Allama Prabhu (contemporary of famous social reformer Lord Basaveshwara of 13th century & Chairman of the Anubhava Mantap religious parliament and birth place being Akkalkot in Maharashtra). The annual Urs has a tradition of a Jangam from Veerashaiva mutt of Gulbarga doing a padayatra to reach here and offer Pooja along with the Chadar laying by the Muttawali of the Dargah. The broken dome of another king forms a picturesque background.

These are a series of tombs of the Bahmani rulers are are beautiful! We visited early morning just after sunrise and spent a good hour plus soaking in the beauty and taking photographs.
Images of Persia, Uzbekistan, and other monuments inspired by the architecture of Persia will flash in front of your eyes. These may not be well known but their beauty is at par with those.

The Bahmani tombs at the village of Ashtur, lying 4 km from the city of Bidar are very scenic and historically romantic. They are around 500 to 600 years old, remembering the Bahmani kings. The rural surroundings of the tombs give off a very serene feeling. The surroundings are beautiful, the people are good and the general historical feel makes you feel romantic just to be here.

Only one covered tomb is open to the visitors, the tomb of Ahmed Shah I. It is the most beautiful of all tombs. The interior is stunning. Every single inch of the tomb used to be covered in beautifully carved Persian tiles. Now some of it is gone, but still it is a stunning sight. However, due to almost no light on the interior, you get to see this beautiful sight only when your eyes adjust to the dark and your camera does not record much of this beauty. It is a pity that the tourism department of the State and the government has not done much to beautify this place.

The other tombs are of Shah Jehan Begum and Alauddin. The tomb of Humayun Shah is a different sight. Its dome has collapsed and the partially collapsed open tomb makes for a beautiful sight, especially if you are watching from the side of Chaukhandi.

There are other smaller tombs too. It is a site not much frequented by foreign tourists. You will find more locals here. Perhaps that is why it is one of the most beautiful places in the Deccan to be. Must visit!
