Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

First time experience at sand boarding with my 5 yr old and 9 yr old. Kids had a blast, the desert is amazing!!! Massive sand dunes, truck ride through the dunes was fun up and down. Kids loved it down the slopes just going back was tiring. Good fun!!

We headed out not really sure what to expect. But a great time was had by all. Travelling as a larger group its hard to find something to suit everyone. The 1yr old enjoyed it as much as the adults.
Nigel was fantastic, the kids loved him....as he tried his hardest to make them squeal with excitement with the bumpy ride.
The dunes are pretty amazing.
Just make sure to bring a drink and snacks as its easy to work up an appetite. Thanks for looking after us Nigel!

Tour recommended & booked by the Nelson Bay tourist information who were very helpful. 4 of us (2 adults & 2 children) on our own tour today. Neil was a great guide and gave of lots of interesting information about the sand dunes & Tin City. The kids had a ball digging for Pipis & then putting them back in the sand. The sand boarding was great fun too.
Would recommend this tour/tour company to anyone.

I took some of my young and sensible young teenagers to new this experience and we honestly couldn't have been treated any worse. From the time we arrived at the top of the hill to do the sandboarding we were all abused and yelled at.

Totally unreasonable compared with our last experience with Moonshadow Tours where they treated you like humans.

We went on this tour and the operators are great people and I garentee you will have a great day out. You start off at the Birubi Surf club carpark and you go on an awesome adventure. You really have to see it to believe it.

The sandboarding with Tours R Us was definitely a blast, but the service was lacking. It gets super hot and tiring climbing up the dunes, so we were counting on the water they said would be provided. When we asked the staff up the dunes, they told us to get it from the company stall by the car park. However, when we went back, the stall was closed and they had gone, so we couldn’t get any water. We had to finish the activity without it, which wasn’t great.
On top of that, the guide gave us his attention for about 2 minutes before heading off to nap next to the cones. It felt like the company didn’t really prioritize customer care.

Had a blast sanduning.

The hardest part is walking up the dune of sand for the few seconds ride back down.

I really enjoyed the ‘stay as long as you want’ concept as there was no rush to get back if you are enjoying yourselves.

Also, the 4WD bus service to get there and back was great fun and an experience in itself.

The only downsides were that some customers still walked up the slope despite being told not to. This caused the slope to get less smooth overtime and therefore you can’t slide down as quickly.

When we arrived at our camping close to anna bay we received the port Stephen visitor guide and a strong recommendation to go sand boarding.

We booked a slot at 4wd tours r us and went there all excited. The reality was a bit of a bummer. Their ad in the guide mentioned 40-50 meter dunes, the reality was more like 20. The pictures in the ad showed boards with bindings, but in reality we got boards without.

We got a short intro and when I asked if they had anything with bindings so we could at least try to steer the answer was negative.

Short after we started 6 busses full of people arrived, flooding the dunes, messing up the sand and just stood in the way trying to make pictures. They allowed more people on there making me realise we joined a tour that just wants to make a lot of money, instead of trying to give their customers the best experience.

A bit of a bummer really.

Trying the sandboarding and surfing itself was a cool experience though.

Overall had a blast. Sliding down the sand dunes offered an exhilarating yet fairly safe experience. Riding down the hills was fast enough to get your heart going, but not too fast to be scary.

Downsides: I found it to be highly priced, given what you’re getting. That bring said, the 4WD 5 minute bus shuttle does add value.

Also another downside, there were quite a few riders who decided to forgo the rules and sit at the bottom of sand dunes and therefore blocked the path down. Also, some riders started sliding down before the earlier rider exited the hill, causing some collisions and close calls.

I hope that the staff there could put in a greater effort to enforce the rules and etiquette on the riders for the benefit of all.

Friendly staff and a great surf sand slope/ Minimum fuss, maximum fun. Recommended, and make sire you have somewhere to collapse when you get home - it's pretty tiring!
