Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a lovely quaint village on the edge of Yulong mountain, 30 mins drive from Lijiang, with tasteful craft shops and coffee shops. We visited on a weekday in January and it was incredibly quiet, didn't feel touristy at all (though I've heard the summer is their peak season). 2 hours is enough.

Baisha is still real ! Not sophisticated as LiJiang Dayan. Easy access from Shuhe and great mountain view from some roof top terraces. There is a small cafe on the main street that serves great "Yunnan Arabica Coffee" ( the name is on the board) and dumplings, it has a roof terrace and the owners speak good english.

We took the number 6 bus from the new area of town outside of the north most square for a trip to this lovely town . The trip there was very interesting as we were able to get away from the tourists and enjoy the local flavor of the area. Baisha sits on the large plain about 20 minutes outside of Lijiang. The trip took us through the newer part of Lijiang too, which was interesting.
It is a quiet and interesting place.

Baisha was what we had hoped Shuhe would be - a beautiful traditional Naxi village in a stunning setting, as yet unspoilt by the rampant over-development that has ruined Lijiang. The is really only one main street but it has a handful of nice cafes and restaurants with both Chinese and Western options, including the fantastic Chine Chine wine bar and cafe. You can bike here from Shuhe and Lijiang and spend a very pleasant day looking round the Naxi Embroidery Institute, visiting the infamous Dr Ho (an odd but rather charming experience!), and just pottering around the back streets of the village or watching the world go by on the tiny central square with the beautiful sight of the Jade Dragon Snow mountain looming in the background. There are also a few pleasant-looking guesthouses in town if you want to make this your base rather than the tacky and overcrowded old towns of Shuhe or Lijiang. Thoroughly recommended.

Visiting this place gave us an idea of how Naxi people lived and practice their trades in embroidery, music and crafts. Pleasant stroll through the town provided memorable views

This was my homebase when I visited Lijiang back in Dec 2012. Really happy I was here instead of the tourist trap that is Lijiang Old Town. Although Baisha Ancient Town has catered to tourists (english menus in a few restaurants is a sign) it is still pretty authentic filled with old buildings and local residences.
I stayed in the town for a few days and did hikes around the town and countryside. You can learn a lot about the NaXi people and the dongba culture. You can visit their embroidery schools. When I was there, I stumbled upon what seemed like a senior citizen center where everybody was dancing, playing, and singing. I ended up talking to a few of them for an afternoon, which was a highlight of my trip to Baisha.
Worth visiting and if it still has the same feel, I would definitely come back.

Visiting Baisha village was probably one of the highlights of our trip to Yunnan. It isn't yet been taken over by the tourist throngs and commercialization that overtaken Lijiang. The town still retains its ethnic character and is a good way to see how life used to be in Chinese villages. Its only 20-30 minutes away from Lijiang and we got there using one of the local taxi's for 40 RMB (foreign tourist prices). You can also take a bus to the area for 1 RMB but we couldn't figure out the right bus number (we took it on the way back and it was very convenient to get back to Lijiang). There aren't as many tourist sites (the palaces with the Buddhist fresco's is one) but if you walk around the town the locals are very friendly and you find quite a few small cafe's and restaurants around. We also happened to run into the Jade Dragon Snow hospital run by a Doctor Ho who has cured many people using herbal medicine (including a patient from Mayo clinic). Spent about an hour there talking to the Doctor's son, who also asked us to invest with him, about herbal medicines and benefits and about the umpteen number of westerners (particularly French) have come through the hospital. We also got invited to a Chinese wedding in one of the nearby villages which was amazing.
Totally worth it especially if you want to get away from the tourist throng of Lijiang.

Really there is one main cobble stoned street with much the same kind of tourist shops found elsewhere in Old Lijiang Town. However it is less crowded and there are some interesting 'antique' shops. The famous Dr Ho who is 90yrs of age and still practices herbal medicine speaks English and he is welcoming. Another highlight of Baisha Old Town is a visit to the silk embroidery/weaving school. The work is the finest you could imagine. One should definitely wear a hat and carry water as the sun beats down as you stroll through the town. There are several restaurants with English menu's showing ethnic dishes. You will see many Naxi folk in Baisha Old Town. Its worth a visit if only to walk in a smaller very ethnic town without the crowds.

This is a very old town and very layback. Has a different feeling to Shuhe or the Old Town.
Which one to go? All three are different. If you like a quieter town with more opportunities for old town pics with less tourists, this is the place.

This ancient town is worth a stop over if you have time. It is along the way from Jade Dragon and snow mountain. Our guide brought us in the afternoon after a morning in the mountain.
Baisha is a relaxed laid back town where you can visit some of the embroidery schools and experience lifestyle of the villagers.
