About
Kalametiya is a coastal wetland area that has an especially rich bio-diversity and is situated on the picturesque southeastern coast of sri Lanka. In the year 2008, Mr. KTH Gayan Geeth started a first Eco-friendly bird watching boat tour in Kalametiya Birds Sanctuary. Our love of the great outdoors and many years of experience has enabled us to develop some of the most exiting adventure and wildlife trips.

    Wading birds galore
Wonderful! To see so many birds in one place. Kingfishers, bee eaters, storks, spoonbills, oriental divers, different duck species and so many waders i couldnt identify them all. Great place for nature lovers. Good day out for little money.

A very Zen, unmissable nature-immersive experience - LOVED it!
this was one of our favorite experiences on our trip to Sri Lanka. We went on a late afternoon boat safari with guide Chamila and had with him both a zen-master and a bird-whisperer in our midst. We saw a LOT of different species, learned a ton and had a very calming and relaxing afternoon. This boat safari also is a great activity when the weather isn't that great, since it doesn't really matter (and they provide huge umbrella's - that helps!). We initially ended up here because of the bad rain at the south coast but ended up having an experience we wouldn't want to miss!!

    A wonderful experience
The trip was amazing with a guide who could identify all the birds and explain their behaviour and habits. One of the most peaceful and relaxing places I have ever visited with a dazzling array of wildlife. It is definitely on my list for my next visit

A great experience and highly recommended
We booked this several weeks ahead from the UK. Gayan and his team were really good. The two young guides who accompanied us were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I have never seen so many different species in one area at the same time.

A perfect evening on the water
The Kalametiya bird watching tour was the highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka. It was such a peaceful and relaxing experience and we saw a lot of interesting birds close up. Our guide Pasindu was very knowledgeable, kind and patient and seems to really love his job. My only regret is that we didn't have time to go back for an early morning tour!

We were out on the water in a very peaceful punt boat and headed back for a stunning sunset. Thank you for sharing the bird sanctuary with us!

    Magical peaceful experience
Wonderful peaceful boat trip shortly after dawn on this salt/freshwater lagoon and bird sanctuary. It was silent apart from the calls of the birds, the slight swish of the punt and the quiet voice of my lovely guide Chimila as he pointed out the birds and said their names. He was extremely knowledgeable and clearly loves the job and the nature around him. He could answer all my questions. We climbed a rock at one point (optional) and saw loads of birds from above the canopy. It was magical just to be surrounded by so much unspoiled nature in the early morning light. The boat was steered expertly by Mihinder. It was fantastic. I went on my own and Gayan (founder of the company) really looked after me and made sure to stay with me after the trip until my partner came to pick me up. Highly recommended!

    A tranquil sunset experience
We enjoyed a wonderful sunset rafting cruise along the lagoon. It was such a tranquil, calming and experience and we saw lots of wonderful bird life as well as water buffalos. Our guides Pasindu and Madhavi, and driver Priya were excellent. We took children aged 10 and 7 and they enjoyed the experience too. Thank you for a lovely afternoon, highly recommend this experience.

    Peaceful and relaxing
The most relaxing was to spend an afternoon, being quietly and skillfully paddled by Chimila through the water lilies and water channels as our knowledgeable guide Guyan pointed out the various birds and other wildlife, including the weird snake bird and beautiful painted storks. The warm breeze and bird song and then the water buffalo responding to the farmers call, made a magical tranquil trip. Guyan and Chimila were so kind to our toddler granddaughter and showed how to make the flower bloom. Thank you,

    Excellent unforgettable experience.
Excellent set up here. Just our family of 3 on a boat with paddler & knowledgeable guide at dawn. Beautiful wetlands and saw lots of different species of birds from bee eaters to herons and eagles and everything in between.

It is in the early morning that Gayan takes you into the wonderful world of the lagoon.
Without a sound you glide on the water aboard his boat.
Still silently, Gayan beckons you to pick up the binoculars to start birding.
As the sun gently warms your back, as you smell the morning scent, your eyes discover a life you never suspected
Large, small, black and white, colorful, alone or in groups, hundreds of birds lead their lives among frogs running on the water.
Gayan knows them all.
While you observe an amazingly colored Kingfisher, Gayan prepares a snack for you and offers you a King coconut before stopping on a rock to gain height and observe the unique world of the lagoon.
Slowly, silently, to take advantage of every moment, return to dry land with the feeling of having lived a magical moment.
Gayan, thank you.

While we saw about 45 different bird species, the real draw for my wife and me is the incredible beauty of the lagoon. i recommend going in the afternoon, as the lighting is great for pictures. I have traveled quite a bit over the last 10 years, and this lagoon, and the quiet of being poled through it made this one the great experiences of my travels. This includes trekking in the Mt Everest drainage, walking through the Namibian desert.

This is a hidden gem with many bird varieties and spectacular views. Both Pasindu and the boatman were knowledgeable and were good at spotting birds. Their genuine gestures of hospitality touched all our hearts.
Gayan practices ecotourism here in ethical and sustainable way. He does not fill the boat with many people unlike some other boats. We saw one as same size as our boat, carrying nearly 20 people. Pasindu was talking quietly and the boat was rowing very slowly, not to disturb the wildlife.
We saw about 25 bird species including some less common species like stork-billed kingfisher (Sri Lanka's largest kingfisher), pied king fisher, swap hen, peasant-tailed jacana, Brahminy kite, indian darter and purple heron.
The price for the 2.5 hour trip was affordable and worth the trip.

Our trip was a spontaneous decision, suggested by our Tuk Tuk driver in Tangalle and we were so glad he did as this is a very special experience and one of the most enjoyable things we did while on holiday in Sri Lanka. We boarded our personal punt/pole boat, and were greeted by Pasindu, our friendly bird guide, and Gayan, our skilful pole driver for a 2 hour adventure gliding along the glassy water of Kalametiya Lagoon. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful, and Pasindu gave us both a pair of excellent binoculars to spot the birds. We saw Purple Herons, Indian Darters, White Egrets, Brahman Kyte, Pheasant-Tailed Jacana, Pied Kingfisher and red-wattled Lapwing. In total, 27 species of birds, some of which are migratory and others that are endemic. We are new to bird watching and Pasindu was very skilled at spotting birds we would have missed. He was also really knowledgeable and spoke English very well, showing us a Sri Lankan bird guide book with more info when desired. Bird watching aside, it was just a really nice atmosphere being out on that water as the day drew to a close. The sunset on the day we visited was average but we still enjoyed the light and shade as well as Pasindu's company. Sunrise is also an option which would be worth doing. There are other things to see on the lagoon if you're not into bird watching, like crocodiles!. Tarzan fans might enjoy it! Great value for money.

We highly recommend Gayan at KalametiyaBirds.com. we had the most gentle morning and then evening tour.
We loved the peace and tranquility of being silently punted around this huge (10square km of lagoon, mangrove and wetlands), magical lagoon.
The punts are very stable even for an older, weighty couple like us.
Each tour last 3-4 hours and Gayan, who speaks excellent English brings spare binoculars, snacks and water for everyone. We would recommend the sun rise and the sunset tours. His number is 0094 (0)777 060920.

I experienced the two hour paddleboat service and it was an exceptional adventure.

I am not a bird enthusiast, but thought the preserve sounded interesting and was very pleased I chose this excursion. My guide Pasidu was pleasant and knowledgeable, and had a great sense of humour. The boat driver Susara possessed incredible skills, and deftly navigated the lagoon.

The lagoon is breathtakingly beautiful, and as the trip progressed, there were so many different birds, that one had to choose, which ones might be more interesting to see . Also, the sense of calmness, and feeling of oneness, with all of this made this a worthwhile trip for the spirit as a sense of peace and unity prevailed.

A true joy.

I would recommend taking this excursion at dawn or around 6 am, before the weather is too hot, and when the wildlife are busy looking for food.

I stayed 2 weeks in Kalametiya, going almost twice a day in the lagoon with Mr. Gayan (the local boat guide) and living in his house. It was a unique experience, for both the calmness of the lagoon and the birding part (Kalametiya is home to almost two hundred different bird species), on boats that felt like we were sliding on water. Mr. Gayan is a really cool guy who made all those visits enjoyable, entertaining and interesting thanks to his impressive experience in birding.
Don't hesitate one second to visit, at least once, this site with him!!

Tour guide Gayan offers an excellent bird watching and eco-tour experience for any level of interest or knowledge. We really enjoyed whole tour and seen lots of birds and nature. I recommend this tour to anyone that love birding and nature. We will come back to do the same tour when we come again to Srilanka for vacation.

I came across it more or less by chance via the internet, while looking for a beautiful bird area near Tangalle. Kalametiya is a relatively unknown area, but a must for bird watchers! Sent a WhatsApp message from the Netherlands to Gayan Geeth and everything was quickly arranged. The price was also clear in advance. Transport to the starting point could be arranged, but that was not necessary for us. Because of the warmth and beautiful light, we recommend going early in the morning. It is "punted" through the shallow lagoon on a kind of catamaran, so total silence, except for the bird sounds. You soon don't know where to look first, there is so much beauty to see. Guide Chamila was knowledgeable (and very friendly) and saw with the naked eye almost everything that flew, swam and dived by. The blooming lilies, the enormous numbers of animals: it is a kind of garden of Eden where you must have floated around for a few hours, if only to relax. In short, contact us on 0094777060920 or visit kalametiyabirds.com
