Such a shame that there is no money to spend on this grand old Railway Station which is situated right on the SA/Vic border and has history just oozing out of its walls. I believe if a Hotel chain got in there and recreated a resort into something spectacular the ground work is all there, it would be amazing especially for people in cities who just want to be out there in the wide open plains of the West Wimmera. The OVERLAND and fast goods go through this Station and golly it would open up the area too. Just another gorgeous old building going to waste. - HELEN OF NHILL

Stopped for a quick peek at the building and platform when Les the caretaker arrived and showed us around, filling out head with the history of the station. Such a knowledgeable, lovely bloke, he made our visit so much more interesting

Like previous visitors, we came looking for the geocache and ended up with a private tour. So worth it. Les, the caretaker, is so informative and an absolute gem. When a freight train came rumbling through, we ran out to feel the wind in our hair and Les just gave us an amused smile. I found the flue arrangement interesting, even artistic in nature. What was going to be a 5min stop turned into an hour and did the time fly. Please visit this place and appreciate the time, dedication and knowledge that Les shares.

We visited Serviceton and alled in to the historic station. We were greeted by Les Milligan, who kindly volunteers his time keeping the grounds in lovely condition, providing a tour and plenty of information. It was fascinating looking through all 3 floors...from the dungeons and storage below ground, to the kitchen, ladies parlour and sleeping rooms on the main floor to the top floor where there were more sitting area/bedrooms. There are a lot of memorabilia, photos and maps that hark back to its hey day. Thanks so much Les, we were happy to leave a donation!

Like an earlier reviewer, it was Geocaching that brought me to the train station.

It is only a short detour off the main highway so more people should come down and have a look.

There is some interesting information about it at the border crossing on the main highway. I suggest that you stop and read that before heading down here. Then you can spend your time wondering if you are in Victoria or South Australia.

We would have been happy just admiring this wonderful heritage site but, then, its long-time caretaker materialised and made a joking offer to sell the place to us for a quick million. Mr Millikan, long retired from life as a shearer and dozer driver, turned out to be the kindest and most amusing guide, opening up locked waiting rooms and cellars and telling us the history. He's been volunteering in this role for 12 years and has added to the value of the history experience with collections of railways remnants and all manner of antique country paraphernaila.
The station is huge and very handsome, once in South Australia but suddenly in Victoria with a boundary adjustment. Its has a rich socxial travelling history and also a sad history in that war prisoners in tranasit were shackled in the cellar. Now, while it has no passengers or trains, it still has big kitchens and from time to time it comes alive for weddings.

The Serviceton railway stations has so much history and so unique to other rail heritage stations. It is huge and has a lot of memorabilia as well as the story of the SA and VIC workload with the track gauges being different. There is a gentleman who will answer all your questions but the architecture, the furnishings and memorabilia is amazing.

We took the detour to have a look at this amazing piece of history. We were lucky enough to be shown through the building... it was great.

Visited today on the way back to Adelaide after touring several places of Victoria. Upon parking the car we were approached by the very friendly and knowledgeable caretaker. We never imagined that someone would welcome us so warmly in such rural and little known place. He explained us the history of the town and the railway station and offered us to have a look inside which we accepted readily. Amazed by the knowledge of the caretaker(pity, I forgot to ask his name) and the place itself after knowing how important and lively that railway station was in the past. Would definitely advice to visit and explore the marvellous piece of history.

This place is off the main route between Melbourne and South Australia and we had not heard of it before. It was our hobby of geocaching that bought us to the historical Serviceton railway station. Our first thought when we arrived there was to find the cache, we were hunting for it, we hear someone say what do you think you are doing?? So we explained what we were up to and the sweet old gentleman gave us a hint to where we should look for the cache. Cache found and log signed.. Now we had time to look around the old station and to our surprise we were invited inside the and given a tour and a history lesson on the town and station by the care taker. It is an impressive building from the outside but inside is just amazing. There is more to this station than what you see above ground, beneath the building is a maze of rooms including prison cells. The building was completed in 1889 and is the biggest station in rural Victoria. It is sad to think this heritage listed building gets no money allocated to preserve it because it is so far from the city and the tourist trails.... So is you are a history buff like me it is worth taking a detour off the highway to see part of Victoria’s railway past.
