The beer is phenomenal. No frills and low key environment- In a wonderful part of Belgium. Not surprisingly, with amazing beer.

You are not allowed entrance into the area without setting up an appointment first. Anyway, defintely worth to visit the place that makes "the best beer in the world", and enjoy the Westvleteren beers at the nearby restaurant "In de Vrede". A must visit when in Belgium.

Since the early 1990s we have visited this and its previous establishment many times - it has always been crowded. If you are a beer aficionado there is nothing more enjoyable than to sit in the sun with three glasses of their beers slowly imbibing and nibbling at a Croque Monsieur. The food on offer is nothing to write home about but the beers are. It's only in recent years that we could buy a pack of three bottles or six but our most recent visit revealed gluttony on a large scale - a queue that would take 20 minutes before being served. Many of those stood in the queue were already clutching their purchased packs but were queueing for more. Our adjoining table of six drinkers had over15 x 6 packs and they were each still taking turns in queueing and they were were not alone. Unfortunately because of health problems there was no way that we could join the queue. We decided to come back the following morning when they opened. We did and there was a large notice saying' No beer on sale today.' We enjoyed one glass and left. Later that day back at St Bernardus Brewery where we were staying a couple of Canadian guests showed off their purchases that they had made that day and also the previous day at the Monastery.. It seemed the displayed notice we had seen was taken down. We were able to console ourselves with a St Barnardus 12 probably made using a similar yeast that the monks had used back in the 1980s as it was this brewery that brewed their beer before they took it back in house. Do a comparison St Bernardus 12 versus Wesvleteren 12 and make your own judgement. Well worth a visit but don't expect a take away purchase.

Big place with lots of seating, the beer is very good and reasonable priced the food is aso very good however a little bit more expensive. Service was good, alot of groups come in and our fairly quickly, so staff can be quite rushed but very courteous. We managed to park our camper in the car park and spend the night.

We had been advised to visit this place and told it was really nice. When we got there the cafe part looked uninviting, bland and not very cosy ( herd them in move them out kinda place). We ordered our beer ( nice as expected) and a ‘bierplankje’ and ‘bitterballen’ see photo. When it arrived the meat was really greasy and all pork based. Very disappointed as it really was too greasy to eat. We had to keep asking the staff to be served , overall not what we had hoped for. And we left hungry.
