Like most other posts I can confirm that this is a worthwhile day trip from Lanzhou. I went with private car which made it a little easier. Best to get to the visitor centre in Liujiaxiazhen before midday and maybe best not to visit in winter as not all the grottos are accessible but definitely avoid Chinese summer and public... More

My trip to the Bingling Si grottoes was arranged through the solo tour I took. They scenery along the Yellow River on the boat ride to the grottoes was fantastic. There were very few people there. Unfortunately, the upper grottoes were closed in preparation for a VIP tour, but the Lower ones were still more than sufficient. The Tang Buddha... More

I thought the grottoes were lovely and well worth the trip - as an independent traveller I was put off by the comments about how hard it is to get there but found it easier than I had thought to make it in the end. The grottoes and statues are old and carved into cliff faces (in fact I think... More

Let me give you first some infos about how to get there: There is a place at 4-5 km of liujiaxiazhen where you can take a boat to the temples. So first go to Liujiaxia. There ask a taxi driver to take you to the boats. You'll find a way to make you understand. Dont expect anybody to speak english,... More

This is not an easily accessible site especially for independent travelers. It is located on the bank of a reservoir and reachable only by a jetty. The challenge is finding transportation and locating the dock to broad the jetty, then arranging the return. The best bet is to hire a local taxi to get to the dock. Given the challenges... More

Our group of 10 hired a minibus to Xiahe and stopped by Bingling Si on the way. The bus dropped us at the jetty by the lake and we hired a speedboat to take us to the grottoes. Cost Y600 for the return trip and the boatman waited for us until we are done with the visit to the grottoes.... More

After an hour and half drive (80 km) from Lanzhou, we arrived at the visitor centre at Liujiaxia, currently under construction. We arrive after mid day when most of the tours on the larger barges had left. We hired a speed boat for 8 persons (only 4 our us plus the boat man) for RMB900 (return). I was told that... More

It's hard to get here, but not impossible. I couldn't be bothered to bargain and wanted a compliant taxi driver so I paid 600RMB for a taxi ride from Lanzhou to the ferry area and back again. At the lake side I had to pay 300RMB for a different taxi that drove around the lake to a ferry dock, there... More

One of China's big ancient Buddhist temple complexes of statues and frescoes of different cultures and worships spanning AD 420 to the Ming Dynasty carved in natural caves in a canyon along the Yellow River. Its history is tied up to the history of the Silk Road and involved 3 major religions - Taoism, ancestral worship and Confucianism. Its key... More

This is a very atmospheric and worthwhile place to visit, with a giant carved Buddha and niches full of carvings and paintings in very good condition, all in a deep gorge on the edge of the Yellow River. The problem is that it is only set up for tour groups and as singles and small groups it is difficult to... More
