After spending a million years trying to figure out how to see the tulou solo, it seemed too much hassle with the buses and I found that it actually worked out cheaper to go with a Chinese tour group. I never normally do this but...More

The Hakka houses are fascinating examples of a very practical architectural model. Try to best to visit the smaller villages, where people simply live in the Hakka houses and haven't turned them into huge traveler attractions.

The houses could be more attractive, had they make it cleaner and renovated a bit to look more like a living museum.

I visited Yongding Tulou starting from Xiamen. I spent 1 night staying inside HongKeng Cultural Village (洪坑村). The tulou clusters which I visited were Yongding HongKeng, Gaobei and ChuXiLou. I would recommend skipping ChuXiLou as the main tulou museum was under renovation. Overall, it was...More

Interesting to visit the Hakka houses which are communal living house with hundreds of smaller rooms and living spaces for families. Apparently during President Ronald Reagan’s presidency, the satellites picked up these rounded structures and spies were sent into Nanjing / Yongding China to investigate...More

Expect to see what's advertised--large round (and square) communal-living spaces surrounding shared courtyards, meeting places and clan temple. Some are in very bad condition; others are being 'gentrified' to take advantage of their new-found fame. Some of the historical showrooms are very sad displays of...More

Yes, you need to take a day tour from Xiamen. At least 2-3 hours drive. But it really worth the visit. There are a few sites, Yong Ding will be a better choice. Most are round & Yong Ding has a square one.
