I visited Lake Mansarovar, and then Kailash in September, 2019. It was an experience of a lifetime! The holy lake exudes a divinity, a benign energy, and bewitches with its ever changing form and sheer beauty. It is also a bio-diversity hotspot and the nesting site of many rare birds, some of whom I saw and photographed while there, along with exploring its many facets. If interested, you can read about the story of my travels and amazing experiences I had, in my book '14 Days To Kailash Mansarovar', available on Amazon.

Our tour operator took the Nepalgunj - Simikot - Hilsa - Taklakot (Purang) - Mansarovar route to reach Darchen (A town just in laps of the Holy Kailash Mountain). The problem is that we got very little time to acclimatize. We stayed in Simikot (1 Night), 1 night Taklakot (purang), 1 night Mansarovar lake, and 1 Night in Darchen which according to my opinion is very very less. If you wish to take the 3 days parikrama, I would seriously recommend to stay at these places for at least 2 nights each to acclimatize properly. Without it, you wont be able to make it or you may get sick on the way, which will spoil the whole trip. My Parent, both in their mid 50's got sick because of the sudden change in altitude.
More people in the group, regardless of age had the same problem. And keep in mind that there are absolutely no medical facilities at Mansarovar Lake. In Darchen, hospital opens at 10 am morning and closes at 6 PM. So if you get sick, there's a little medical help available, plus the language barrier.
Some tips for travellers of all age group…
Get your thorough CHECKUP done from family doctor or a good physician, DO NOT go if your doc don’t allow.
(1) Start taking Dimox tablets 2 days before starting the trip, this is a magical pill and would help to acclimatize with changing altitude. You will reach more than 15000 feets in Darchen (Yama doaar)
(2) Carry Torch and extra batteries, there is power problem at lake mansarovar.
(3) Carry all your medication, emergency medication along, there’s a very little chance you will get help on the way, if you are taking a group tour, the group would not wait for you.
(4) Most important: CARRY you OWN portable oxygen cylinders (price 25-40 Yuan), carry at least 2 per person, you may get in Purang (Taklakot) upon entering China . If you feel breathless, DO NOT test yourself (even if you are a fitness athlete), take 2-3 puffs and you will feel better.
(5) Toilet Paper: If you are staying at Mansarovar Lake, you’ll have to spend a night in a mud-house, the toilers are dirty and stinky. So, carry 2 rolls of toilet paper.
(6) Take small packets of snacks, biscuits, namkeens, chocolates, glucose, toffees, dry fruits for instant energy.
(7) DO NOT carry too much luggage, it’ll become a headache for you, 1 Kg at your home will feel 10 kgs at Darchen. Oxygen level is so low, that you will loose your stamina quickly. In my 8 days trip, I just had the opportunity to bathe 4 times. So no need to carry everyday new clothes. Max weight that you must carry is 10 kgs (including one small backpack)
(8) Stay hydrated all the time, drink small sips of water all the way, try consuming 3-4 liters everyday. If you are dehydrated, altitude sickness can happen.
(9) The best solution for altitude sickness is to get down asap. If you feel really sick. Try loosing 500 – 1000 fts.
(10) If you are taking a private tour operator, who provide winter Jackets, DO not depend on those, carry your own jacket as well, carry Inners sets 2 pairs at least, windcheater, Monkey Caps, gloves, more as per individual needs.
I hope these points must help a lot of people. Stay hydrated, stay healthy, stay safe, and I wish you all the very best for the Holy Kailash Yatra.

Beautiful nature, heavenly experience but whole experience turned to a NIGHTMARE by a FRAUDULENT AND GREEDY tour operator (Raghukul Holidays, Pune) who claims to be a specialist in Kailas Manasarovar Tours.
Besides other issues and poor arrangements :
The owner Amit Kulkarni, who had made it a USP that he would personally accompany the tour DITCHED THE GROUP at Kathmandu on the second day of the tour and left the group of 66 in the hands of only ONE INEXPERIENCED FIRST TIMER EMPLOYEE.
FRAUDULENTLY collected INR. 2000/- per person as additional charges for urgent processing of Visa
Made the group wait at Kodari for three days even when Visa had been issued.
At Kodari, BLACKMAILED the group (under threat of cancelling the tour) to illegally carry for him nearly 100,000 USD in cash for reasons best known to him.
CHEATED members by collecting money for porters (700 Yuan per person) for Kailas Parikrama but not providing porters and not returning the money either, thereby
Skipped the acclimatization stays on the way and took the group straight from Kodari to Mansarovar in two days flat.
Had no provision oxygen pillows / cylinders with the tour. Consequently ONE PERSON EXPIRED AT DARCHEN DUE TO HYPOXIA AND TWO MORE HAD TO BE URGENTLY EVACUATED.
THIS IS NOTHING BUT CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE
Is SHAMELESS enough to comment in the end that "At least your tour got through"
But still and in the whole, if you have a good tour operator, the journey is worth undertaking.

Totally disorganised company, money ONLY MOTIVE, cheating the pilgrims who are mostly elderly, that too lonely elderly women,
They collect money very much in advance from the travellers but NOTHING IS BOOKED IN ADVANCE for the trip, For example, when our group of 72 people arrived in Pokhara to fly to JAM SOOM, I saw the local agent rushing with hot cash to buy air tickets across the counter. The END RESULT: Only 41 of us got to fly and rest were asked to come next day, and the next day POKHARA Airport was closed for the whole day due to VERY POOR VISIBILITY, The group was mercilessly returned to Kathmandu thereby abolishing the dreams of many to go to Muktinath.
DONT GO WITH ANNAPOORANI YATRA SERVICE, if u hv booked a trip with them, PLS CANCEL IMMDTLY,

I had been hearing about Holy Lake Mansarovar for so many years - rather from my childhood. The more I read about and hear the stories related to Mansarovar my urge to visit the place got stronger. Undoubtedly this is the GOD's own creation at such a high altitude. The first look of clean and beautiful crystal clear water make you crazy and gives you cognizance - full of delights with the refreshed mind, body and soul...
One has to reach Purang via various available routes. For me I reached the place via Lucknow (INDIA) - Nepalgunj - Simikot (3000 Mtrs) - Hilsa (3700 Mtrs) - Purang (3800 Mtrs) - Mansarovar Lake. You can take a parikrama (circuit) of Lake Mansarovar by road. One has to travel around 70 Kms to complete the parikrama. On the banks of Lake Mansarovar you can visit Chu Monastery which is again a beautiful place to visit.
If possible try to spend a night on the banks of Lake Mansarovar. The simple mud guest house stay facilities are available at this place. You can experience the beautiful glittering lake and the sky full of stars and moon (if you happen to visit on full moon days). It is said that (as per Hindu Mythology), the GODs in the form of star take a dip in a holy lake in the mid night and indeed we were lucky enough to experience some stars coming down from sky touching the lane waters....
Some dos and don'ts to be followed...
1. In case you wish to book the Yatra; check the itinerary properly. Ensure the operator has spare reserve days included and also has enough stays for acclimatization at each place before you start Kailas Parikrama. I believe one needs min 1 night in Simikot (3000 Mtrs) and 2 Nights in Purang (3800 Mtrs) and 1 night in Darchen (4750 Mtrs). Also check whether personal tour manager accompanies the tour else most of the operators take your booking and hand you over to Nepal tour operators upon reaching Nepalgunj or Kathmandu. Our operator was with us right from start to end point and ensured that we faced minimum or no difficulties. We had stranded in Simikot for 4 days due to bad weather as no flights were operating; already we had 2 spare days in itinerary but due to 2 extra days at Simikot we missed our Mumbai Lucknow flight but still our operator managed it well and rebooked our tickets. His personal touch with Tibetan Guides and Legend Officer ensured the best priority services for us.
2. Seriously follow all instructions of your tour manager / sherpas. You are in a different country which is really not very friendly with Indian Tourists.
3. Ensure you do not have any photo / write up related to "Dalai Lama". At Nepal Tibet Border personally check your mobile phone gallery and cameras. If they found anything related to Dalai Lama, you or entire group may be sent back. Better format your mobile phone and clean Your WhatsApp Media after backing up. Be patient with all formalities rather make up your mind and go there to be ill treated as they test your patience during immigration and customs formalities.
4. Clothing : Firstly do not overload your luggage. You are allowed to carry only 10 Kgs in a small flight and helicopter. But carry enough warm clothes. Min 2 Body Warmer Sets, Sweaters, some T Shirts, Jackets, Pull overs, Socks and Hand Gloves and a monkey cap. Carry scarf to cover your mouth and neck. I bought the one at Purang which was made of thin cloth and hence was comfortable for breathing while mouth and nose were covered.
5. Do not bath once you leave Kathmandu or Nepalgunj till the time your reach back (on return journey) to these places. Bathing at higher altitude may cause you the health issues. We experienced this as 3 persons from our group did not follow this instruction of your manager and 2 of them fell sick with high fever and cold. You get a chance to bath / take a dip (?) at Mansarovar. Do not spend much time in cold water. Just a single dip or take little water for bath and then immediately dry yourself with towels and wear your set of clothes.
6. Start taking Diamox 250 right from Simikot. In fact our manager personally ensured that each one of us had the tablet every evening.
7. Eat your food on time to time. At high altitude most of the times people do not eat their lunch and dinner or eat less... This brings your energy level down. Carry some extra dry snacks / laddus, chocolates and small packs of mixed dry fruits which will work as supplement. Take Rest at each destination this will help you retaining your energy levels.
8. Do not forget to carry Tissue Papers (small pouches to keep in hand bag), wet tissue paper packs and most importantly TOILET TISSUE ROLLS... In Deraphuk, Zuthulphuk and Mansarovar either toilets are not available or the conditions are very worst. I found tissue papers very handy at these places. Carry a torch - it's very useful in the above mentioned 3 places.
9. The parikrama is much easier now a days compared to the situation few years ago. Some people may try to scare you with the stories of difficulties but those were earlier days. Now it's much easier. But at the same time don't be over confident. If you follow proper instructions and diets all will be well and smooth.
10. Last but not least... If you wish to stay connected with your family and beloved ones I suggest to get your phone International Roaming enabled.... In entire Tibet you have a great connectivity and signal strength including the parikrama route. In case you wish to use WiFi at Purang / Darchen hotels getting WiFi connection is the biggest issue and the hotel people won't entertain any request; in this situation install Turbo VPN app - it works and pulls extra bandwidth from WiFi for your Mobile phone.
To conclude it was a super experience for me and would really love to do the Yatra again...

We recently carried out the Kailash Mansarovar yatra/parikrama. There are two sides to the story - the place is superb but it is spoilt by useless tour operators and total lack of sanitation.
A simple question- If a place is so holy, why would you want to make it dirty with almost inhuman sanitation facilities? The minute you walk out of any of the ashramas where you would stay during the parikrama, you have to mind your step so as to not step into someone else's defecation.
I think that if things are not controlled as far as waste and sanitation go, then Kailash Mansarovar will also become another Kedarnath. Filthy inspite of being holy and beautiful.
Secondly, we would like to mention our tour operator - Neelkanth Tours and Richa Tours. Neelkanth is based in Ahmedabad and Richa is based in Nepal. Both of them are useless.
And here are my logical reasons for saying so:
1. Lack of knowledge
They do not share any knowledge of the holy or important places while on tour. They dont stop for photographs. They claim that the Ashtapad has not been found. Whereas, the truth is that the Ashtapad is approx. 14 kms from Darchen. Only, a special permission needs to be taken to visit it as an accident had occurred a few years ago.
2. Cutting costs, increasing profits
They want to to their costs at any cost. It does not matter if the yatris stay in dirty ashrams and sleep in filthy beds. If there are no comparitive facilities in the vicinity then it can be understood that they have tried their best. But, this is not the case.
In Darchen, we stayed in a dharasmshala which had dust and filth all over. Right opposite us was a swanky new hotel - Hotel Kailash Himalaya.
Neelkanth and Richa Tours want to earn a quick buck on everything and will not go the extra mile.
3. Callousness and Low-morality
Kailash is at a height of 16000 ft. Logically, a tour operator who is taking a group of around 80 people with an average age of 55+ would take oxygen back-up.
Neelkanth and Richa are so callous, that they charge you for the oxygen back-up.
4. Favoring friends
Neelkanth and Richa is a group of unprofessional tour operators. They not only raised the prices for the horses and porters which are required to do the parikrama. But what is worse, they ensured that their own sherpas carried the bags of their friends. So that, their friends would not have to incur the expense of the same.
Lastly, all i would like to say is that. Kailash Mansarovar is a beautiful place. But it is not able to take the massive influx of tourists. And worst tour operators like Neelkanth and Richa make an already taxing trip, a nightmare.

It was once in lifetime divine experience in Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The staff of Kailash Journeys (to name a few....Mr. Kalyan Parajuli, Mr. Paras, Mr. Rajkumar and their team) made it easy, even against all odds, by their dedication and friendly approach.
I would say that if it is Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, then it has to be in hands of experts.... the Kailash Journeys.

KAILASH MANASAROVAR YATHRA -The ultimate trip in the world which is religious, pious, lifes dream for any Hindu and of course tough and grueling was the trip made by me ( age 64 )and my wife (age 58). We had been briefed, cautioned, trained and well monitored by Mr.Srinivasan of Samrat Travels for whom personally this trip was his 49th parikrama by walk. Samrat Travels was professional in any and every aspect, understood and were ready for all types of problems. Mr.Srinivasan ( mobile no. +91-9600991111 ) and his team of sherpas knows almost all problems associated and they are proactive and ready in spite of continuously monitoring and providing education and guidance to us. Their courtesy, hospitality and support was par excellent.
Three Major reasons which make this trip tough are, 1. the altitude adjustment the body requires as we would never have traveled beyond hill stations in the world which are just 1/3rd of the altitude of kailash manasarovar.
2. The low oxygen availability which make life miserable as without sufficient oxygen the whole human system may suffer
3. the fall in temperature and the change in temperature which is drastic in Tibet( 7 to 8 degrees when cloud covers sun, in normal city in india it is just one degree)
Samrat Travels guided us promptly so we took enough precautions, trusted them fully and did not adventure out of their strict instructions, we could finish the parikrama of 52 Kms and are back to our home hale and healthy. Incidentally 6 youngsters of age group less than 30 couldnt complete as they threw caution to the wind, were over confident but could not proceed beyond manasarovar as they became sick due to one the above 3 reasons.
Manasarovar is tempting, but bright sunlight doesnt mean it is physically comfortable to take bath, cautious approach helps you to enjoy and also take care.THE THREE days of Parikrama is tough but can be completed and also can be enjoyed, if you are cautious and take adequate care and preparation before and during the trip.
the tibetan horsemen are rude when u go in horse but our kind approach considering them as human beings makes them offer best support. they dont understand our language and I used whistle to draw their attention whenever we wanted break, water, food or what ever it is or else they want to dump you on the other end as early as possible ignoring our physical and mental inconvenience.
IS IT WORTH ALL THESE TROUBLE - YES, YES AND YES. IF LORD SHIVA IN KAILASH IS WITHIN YOU TOO THEN HE ENSURES THAT ALL TROUBLES ARE TAKEN CARE. OM NAMASIVAYA.

Many people who visit Tibet want to go to Mt Kailash but just near Mt Kailash is the most magnificent freshwater Lake Manasarovar which is worth visiting in its own right. It is also worth spending an extra couple of days there to take in its beauty and surrounding sights. Lake Manasarovar is at an altitude of 4,560 metres or 15,060 feet and covers an area of 412 square kilometres, so it is a huge body of water. It is nearly 90 metres deep. When you arrive at the Lake from Shigatse you are greeted by a massive concrete tourist information centre with rows of big blue buses used to drive tourists around the lake but you can also drive down to the lake edge and have a picnic lunch and go for a walk to see the waves rolling in. You may also see large groups of Indian tourists who camp in special areas as this is one of the most holy lakes for them. Then drive around the lake to the Chiu Gompa monastery where you can stay in the most homely Tashi Hotel on the edge of the lake. From here you can go for walks and enjoy the beauty of the lake. There are breathtaking views across to the snow capped peaks of the Himalaya mountain range on the right with views across to the peak of Mt Kailash on the left and many birds including seagulls at that altitude. From the hotel you can walk back along the main road through town to the new hot spring baths where you can soak in clean giant tubs in private cubicles for as long as you like for around $10. When you book your trip to Mt Kailash make sure the program includes at least 2 or 3 days at the Chiu Gompa end of Lake Manasarovar.

Kailash Mansarovar are all conducted groups with 40-50 pilgrims in each batch .Usually every group has 2-3 single ladies and if they are not there that also does not make any difference becoz group will surely have ladies . Accommodation is also in Guest houses in Tibet with 4 to 5 in a room so the entre tour is very secure and spiritually inclined .

Hi friends,
My parents want to go for this holy trip this year. They live in Bangalore, India.
Any recommendation for good Travel agents whom we can contact for arrangements?
We are strict vegetarians and by God's grace they are fit and healthy. So no concerns regarding travel. However, is there anything specific they need to prepare for the travel?
I plan to send them in July-August or Aug-Sep.
many thanks for your reply.
regards,
Jai

Clothing for the hike around Kailash? I will have a base layer. Next, there is an Patagonia R1 fleece jacket (light). Do I need that or an R3 fleece jacket (Heavy) plus a rain jacket?
