About
The world's first Unzoo project is an innovative and holistic wildlife experience dedicated to showing you the unique animals and plants of Tasmania while taking a lead role in preserving the critically endangered Tasmanian devil. Join our guided wildlife encounters and come face to face with our famous devils, pademelons, rosellas, kangaroos, possums and tawny frogmouths. More than two km of trails take you through the Tasmanian Native Botanic Garden from tall tree forest to the Norfolk Bay seaside. The principle of the Unzoo is to immerse you in our natural environment so, for instance, we have removed our boundary fences so the local wild animals can come and go as they please. Allow two hours for your visit or add an hour for a 4WD research and conservation adventure to see how we are managing the last safe wild Tasmanian devils on Earth. The Unzoo is open every day (except 25 Dec) from 9am. We schedule our wildlife encounters each half hour or so, that's 14 every day.

- Leanda D49 contributionsWhat an amazing place! Lots of Tassie Devils to seeI've read some other folks missed out on seeing Tassie Devils, not sure why as we saw heaps. We went to 2 feeding sessions where the guides tell you heaps about them, but there was also lots out just enjoying the sunshine (20c sunshiny day...maybe that helped, as they were out of their dens, but still saw them in their dens too). There was also Cape Barren geese with their babies, Echidnas, Pademelons, Kangaroos and wild Tasmanian Rosella's that will happily eat out of your hand and sit on your shoulder at the bird show. The park is not run down, it's meant to be a natural environment for the animals. We enjoyed the rustic look, it added to the experience and you can see how content the animals are.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 October 2023
- Howard AAuckland, New Zealand401 contributionsEssentialThis is a fabulous opportunity to meet Tasmanian wildlife up close and personal. The idea of an 'Unzoo' is that the animals are not caged and in as natural a situation as is possible. We first encountered a small group of Pademelons. There is no particular part of the property where they stay. They go where they please, mostly. As my wife and I were on our own, they were not scared and let us get very close before they put a safe distance between us. Another area was inhabited by wallabies, kangaroos and native geese. While not tame, they were, mostly, prepared to let us feed them and stroke them. It is worth respecting any of them who are not keen to interact. Getting close quickly shows their strength and the size of their claws. The stars of the show were the Tasmanian Devils. There is a little wall between them and the visitors. It is as much to protect you as them. They look very cute but they are savage and dangerous. Do not be taken in. Sadly, they are not too bright either. We were approached by an echidna. It isn't part of the park, it was simply wandering past and came to say hello.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 November 2023
- summersun808Honolulu, Hawaii5 contributionsGreat chance to view devils up close and feed wildlife (including kangaroos)We really enjoyed our visit to the unzoo. The guide was very informative and we were able to see the devils up close and view a feeding. The best part was spending time with the wildlife and feed some of the birds and forest kangaroos. I would recommend this to anyone visiting the area.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 November 2023
- Viktoria KPerth, Australia116 contributionsA Highlight Day of WonderTasmania has lots of amazing sights and experiences to fill every day you can spare. And, as Port Arthur will be on your list, you’ll find yourself travelling past the Tasmania Devil Unzoo. Take the time to stop and visit. An Unzoo showcases native wildlife in their natural habitat and you can interact with them on their terms. It’s a marvellous couple of hours. And a refreshing break from the drive to Port Arthur.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 December 2023
- Rebecca BChirnside Park, Australia23 contributionsFun and interesting placeI love this place. If you do your research you'll learn that animal sightings aren't guaranteed, but that's the beauty of it. It's built for the animal's comfort. We hand fed rosellas, Cape Barren geese and kangaroos, and saw eels and tassie devils being fed. I patted a kangaroo! Never done that before. The guide was great: interesting and engaging. I came here 25 years ago and can see that it's expanded significantly since then.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 December 2023
- Kaile S17 contributionsKangaroos and Devils! What a fantastic day! This is a small, informal "unzoo"/sanctuary. It was just the right size and scale for us -- we were there about 1.5 hours. We saw wild pademelons who hopped nearly right up to us, of course the devils who were running about in their special area (and later we saw them being fed), and spent quite a bit of time with the kangaroos, who ate out of our hands! Pretty special to get to pet the kangaroos. The guides were great at telling a bit about the animals and the unzoo project. It felt really special, and not overwhelming in scale, which was perfect.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 January 2024
- Roam10460706621Ottawa, Canada3 contributionsFun feeding the cute animals!I had a blast at the unzoom, feeding the very sweet, kangaroos and seeing their Joeys. There were also pademelons (wallabies) roaming around freely. We feed free parrots in our hands. The Tasmanian devils were definitely a treat. We saw them being fed and they were curious and smelling everything. I loved all the interactions with the animals.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 February 2024

Clearly passionate about animal welfare, freedom and the environment. We watched Tasmanian Devils being fed. Stroked kangaroos. Fed birds. Such a great concept. Spent 45 wonderful minutes at the Un-zoo today. Saw a Tasmanian Devil eat his lunch and then our guide
allowed us to feed some Green Rosella birds. The highlight for me was the kangaroo area where our tour group had a chance to feed the zoo kangaroos all of whom were rescued and hand fed....so they are completely comfortable and docile around humans. The un-zoo staff were all friendly, helpful and informative and the gift shop was full of fun items. Would have stayed longer but had to move on with other touring commitments. This small animal preserve is well worth a visit and proceeds go to support the animals at the facility and other Tasmanian wildlife.

If you visit Hobart and you are interested in wildlife, you should definitively go to visit the "Unzoo". From Hobart it is about a 1hr drive depending on where you start in Hobart. I went there on my way to visiting the Tasman Peninsula, on a regular weekday, so i had plenty of parking space.
The lady at the entrance was super kind and friendly and gave me a warm welcome, so i felt good from the first moment. I arrived just in time to joyn a (free) guided keepers tour: starting at one of the Devils enclosures, she (the lady keeper) shared a lot useful and interesting infos about theses little fury guys, she was really very knowledgeable and was patiently answering all of the guests questions. The feeding of the Devils surely is THE highlight of every tour. There are 4 Devil enclosures in total, the guided feeding is rotating during the day, so you could have the chance of seeing different Devils feeding if attending more than one tour. Beside the Devils there were a lot of free roaming Pademelons, Kangaroos, Cape Barren Geese, many wild birds around, like the endemic Yellow Wattlebird, New Holland Honeyeater, Green Rosellas and many more. During the Birds of the Bush show there are Green Rosellas, Tasman Native Hens, and a dancing Galah to see :). There are only a few enclosures left (mainly bigger ones for birds), as most of the animals are roaming around freely. In one of the enclosure there was a very cute golden Possum, which is actually a colour morph of the "regular" Brushtail Possum but can´t hardly survive in the wild due to its colouration. You can also joyn a tour to the lagoon and try to spot the white bellied eagle there as well.
Overall i spent a couple of hours there, and i even visited the place a second time two days later before heading on to Maria Island.
I was deeply impressed by the friendlyness and high level of knowledge of the staff, they run this place very well. Perhaps the reason why everything was so well organized is the fact, that the days i visited i only saw ladies in charge :)
Well, i can highly recommend this place, and the next time i visit, i try to do the "Devil Tracker Tour" which takes you out in the wild to track some wild Devils. This Tour can also be booked at the Unzoo and unfortunately i missed it. Hopefully next time!

We had an unplanned opportunity to visit this ‘unzoo’ as an ‘add on’ to a day trip we were undertaking to Port Arthur. For an additional $10.00 we were given the opportunity to see the curious carnivorous marsupials that roam wild through the island state, the Tasmanian Devil. It’s regarded as a vulnerable species, On their website, their ‘zoo’ concept is a reversal of the traditional concept of a zoo. Instead of exhibiting animals in traditional enclosures for the benefit of humans, Unzoo supposedly invites us into natural habitats where cages and barriers are removed or concealed and wild.
I wasn’t convinced this was the case. The first thing we saw, as we wandered through (or near) the Fern Forest was a Tasmanian Devil in a small deep cage. Later on we witnessed the feeding of another Tasmanian Devil in yet another cage, albeit a bit more spacious and more ‘wild’ than the first.
That said, it was a good opportunity to see these unique Australian animals at close range. The explanatory commentary by the keeper was informative and interesting. It was also great to be able to get close-up to some pademelons, and to some mix with, at close range, some fairly tame kangaroos, which could be fed. Overseas visitors certainly delighted in this opportunity!
I wasn’t all that fussed on the much-hyped ‘bird show, featuring a cockatoo (or was it a galah) and a wedge-tailed eagle. I’ve seen many of these previously, and whilst the commentary was OK, the whole show lacked drama, and almost hinted at these birds being kept in confined spaces after the show was over.
I believe the full entrance fee is quite steep, over $30.00. Had I paid that, I would have felt a bit ripped off. I get that some of that may contribute to conservation and research programmes, but the experience we had wasn’t worth that.

Hello and thank you for your review.
Thank you for visiting us here at the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo. The ticket price of $10 with the tour company is an extremely good deal considering it is 75% off our usual ticket price. The proceeds of the ticket price go towards the conservation projects we run in helping to save Tasmania's iconic Tasmanian Devil.
The aim of our Unzoo is to showcase Tasmania's local animals in a more authentic and wild way. Due to the nature of the extremely contagious and fatal facial cancer the Tasmanian Devil is subject to, these are the only animals we have in special habitats. We have tried to emulate the habitats that the Tasmanian Devils would have in the wild as well as work with the types of habitats and nature that we have at the Unzoo. Our habitats have been built for the Tasmanian Devils with the guidance of world renowned zoo designer Jon Coe and his concept of the 'Unzoo' which we believe to way of the future.
We would like to note that we don't have any birds of prey, including Wedge-tailed eagles at the Unzoo, unless of course the are wild and are perched in trees around the Unzoo. The bird you are perhaps referring to is a Tawny frogmouth. The birds which were being showcased in our presentation are all birds which have been injured or hand raised and are unable to be released into the wild as they simply would not be able to look after themselves.
Thank you again for you review, and we hope you had a great trip to Tasmanian.
Kind Regards,
Henrietta

Devils didn't look healthy, were just thrown a frozen chunk of wallaby meat for them to run off with at feeding time. Bird show consisted of host telling crowd about birds they USED to have and put a bit of seed on a tray for a couple of common bush birds to come and feed. No other animals except for wallabies some kangaroos and Cape baron geese.
Wouldn't have been too bad overall if the price reflected the level of experience we received, $94 for a family of 4!

This is an enjoyable and worthwhile thing to do in Port Arthur. The Unzoo is like a sanctuary for indigenous animals. They live in their natural habitat in large areas; unlike a zoo that keeps them in pens and cages for the viewing pleasure of the paying customers. Only the Tasmanian Devils are kept a distance from the humans because of their sharp claws and teeth.
We were able to hand feed the docile kangaroos and geese. We watched and learned about the feeding of an Australian eel, a possum and a devil.
Entry fees go to taking care of the animals.
Thoroughly enjoyable.

We were driving past when we saw a sign for the Unzoo, and we still can’t believe how lucky we were for the experience! Kiera guided us through the park, with the perfect combination of facts, insights, humour, and also time to ourselves. We saw the feeding of a Tasmanian Devil from very close and learnt about the efforts being made to treat their contagious cancer. There are animals roaming the grounds and we saw a beautiful albino possum be fed, but most excitingly we had the opportunity to feed both wild rozellas and kangaroos! The kangaroos were absolutely gorgeous, there were joeys and they were all fearless in approaching you to eat right out of your hand. One even held my hand while eating out of it! We explored the park on our own as well, which was just fantastic. We saw other Tasmanian Devils up close and the other animals roaming freely. It was such a delight; Kiera was fantastic and knowledgeable, and we were thrilled that our entrance fee was going towards curing the surprisingly cute Devils. I highly recommend anyone that is in the area to go, or even if you aren’t to make a special trip. We had so much fun and are still raving about it.

This is a small zoo no doubt, but I really appreciate what the owners are trying to do. You are effectively paying for the Tassie Devil feeding and the Bird show. But in my humble opinion - it's worth the ticket price.
The zookeepers were knowledgeable and humorous; we really enjoyed the presentations.
The only problem we encountered is the queueing time...it may take a while...

We do not recommend you to visit this place since it is over-priced and the experience is disappointing especially for the Devils feeding presentation. The presentation is expexted to be 30-minutes long and firstly Nathan who was the guide was late. Secondly, we gathered around the feeding point and he spent 29 minutes talking about Devil’s information while only spent 1 minute attempt to feed the Devil. The devil didnt even show up to the audience and he announced that was the end of the presentation. Everyone was so disappointed and impatient. Totally waste your time!!!!
The worst thing in our Tasmania trip comes from this poor-managed zoo!

My wife and I totally enjoyed our experience at the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo. There is plenty to see and definitely worth the admission for the tours and feeding times. Keira the manager led our group through feeding kangaroos and devils and her narrative was very interesting and her information up to date. She is credentialed in several fields relating to zoology and wild animal rescue. And rather predictably she's a lovely lady with plenty of time of everyone's questions.

Loved this place. We watched the feeding of the Tasmanian Devil, then fed the kangaroos, and laughed so hard at Cheeky the cockatoo. One of our Tassie highlights but make sure you arrive for the 10am tour and stick with the keeper.

Thank you very much for your inquiry.
Most of our visitors hire a car and drive themselves from Hobart,. It is about an hour's run, usually in light traffic.
Alternatively there are shore excursions offered on board which sometimes include us.

No, it is just like a regular Zoo. You can turn up and just stroll through. I do recommend going in the afternoon as they seemed to be when the feeding of animals occurred and when the birdshot was on. As for price, we had a family of 4 and it cost less than $50.

About how many of these "Devils" are in the place? We saw them at the Expo in 1988 - fascinating and funny. We have only one day in Hobart and would like to go on a boat trip and see this place too. The pictures of the area are gorgeous. Any suggestions would be very helpful and appreciated. What time do the devils get fed? So excited to be getting to Australia again.

Hello there.
Thank you again for getting in touch.
For some reason this query has cropped up again after we supplied an answer.
We have four habitats with Tasmanian devils and offer feedings and presentations every hour or so. We also offer a really interesting option of a 900 minute 4WD forest tour to demonstrate how we are using special infra-red photography to monitor the last safe population of local wild devils to ensure they remain free of the strange cancer that has decimated gthe species across Tasmania.
Please be assured your visit will have face to face encounters with these fascinating creatures. You also can hand feed friendly pademelons and kangaroos at 10.30 and 2.30, join quoll feedings at 12.15 and 4.15 and have a bit of fun with our Birds of the Bush show at 11.15 and 3.30. We are open from 9am until 5.30.
Kind Regards,
