- Ovidiu CBucharest, Romania70 contributionsHidden gem!Located 7 km from Patong Beach, between Karon and Rawai, it is the perfect location for relaxation. Quiet, not crowded, perfectly combines the forest with the beach. You can go to the beach directly on the sand, but there are also sunbeds with umbrellas that cost 200 baht (2 sunbeds and an umbrella).Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 November 2023
- LeannieHanoi, Vietnam2,488 contributionsNice at sunsetPopped down to this beach to watch the sun going down. At that time of the evening it wasn't busy on the beach which was nice. There were a selection of long tail boats in the sea which looked nice against the sunset. The beach itself looked clean and nice sand to walk on. Look forward to returning during the day to experience the beach more.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 February 2024
- 192CR41 contributionsPhuket Too crowded - PhiPhi islands touristy and crowdedWhile the beach was nice, it was so crowded. So many signs in Russian and so many tourists everywhere. 300 baht for an umbrella and w beach chairs is the going rate. Surprised so many Russians everywhere as it seems they have taken over. Tour to PhiPhi Islands also so crowded with speed boats everywhere. I read there are thousands visiting everyday with sewage going into the ocean as they don't have water treatment plants. Not interested in returning as there are other places instead of Phuket.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 February 2024
- Shurley5 contributionsKataIt was very busy. The beach reminded me of costa brava where every bit of sand is occupied. There are people selling their wares and icecreams too. 200-300baht for loungers and brollys. The town itself has a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as food stalls. Very busy traffic and crazy scooter riders. We chose here as it is described as a quieter, family friendly part of phuket. Maybe at other times of the year, or just not now. We had a good time but not sure if i would rush backVisited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 February 2024
- Gene R JSilver Spring, Maryland10,795 contributionsBeautiful popular swimming beach with calm surf. With morning shade, we walked from its north entrance, passing the expensive Club Med to the exclusive Boathouse Hotel at the south end. I climbed rocks here to get a long view of the back of The Big Buddha facing eastward. This 1 mile long beach is wide enough to locate a sandy spot of your own or choose to rent among the hundreds of umbrella chairs. I liked swimming in the gentle surf with just a few long tail boats at each end for beauty, several paddle boards to judge distance from shore and no jet skis. Just after the midpoint is the street access to the Tourists Service Center, providing a clean inexpensive toilet/shower, then a short walk passing the Kata Town Hall to the excellent Walking Street Food Market for all typical lunch choices. There were also numerous waiting taxis to return to our uphill hotel.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 February 2024
- jerras s3 contributionsGreat beach location!Kata Beach was a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. With its soft sands, clear waters, and great surf, it was a haven for beach lovers and thrill-seekers alike. Plus, its surrounding shops, restaurants, and bars offered everything needed for a fantastic day by the sea.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024
- mitzisydneySydney, Australia250 contributionsGorgeous beachGorgeous clean beach, soft sand and warm water. We loved this beach, it is spectacular. We were amazed how clean this beach was despite the fact there were so many people on the beach. We used to holiday in Bali but the beaches there are dirty and the water is filthy but Thailand particularly Kata Beach and Khao Lak are spectacular and a joy for swimming.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 April 2024
- jennie l4 contributionsStunning sunset! Our family had an absolute blast at Kata Beach! The kids couldn't get enough of the crystal-clear waters and soft sand, perfect for endless beach fun. We loved the vibrant local scene with fantastic restaurants and shops just a short walk away. The stunning sunsets were the cherry on top of an unforgettable trip.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 July 2024
- HildybluesKuala Lumpur, Malaysia249 contributionsPhuket InsightsThe place is filled with tourists, restaurants shops and the beach has many activities. The beach is quite crowded and it was low season. For some tourists this is a wonderful break but personally I preferred being at Khao Lak beach where the pace is slower and just less touristy. We got a Taxi Driver Mr Jamroen +66805372447 who took us on a private tour to the Big Buddha, Chalong Temple, the Cashew nut factory and the Old Town. He was very informative and he’s a Foodie so he knows where to find the best food. I would recommend him highly as he speaks English too. He drove us to Surin Beach and treated us to Thai roast pork and sticky rice delights.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 31 July 2024
- hdhd0926 contributionsBeautiful beachI loved this beach. It was the only one I frequented as I was staying very close by and didn’t have much interest in beach hopping. It was very vibrant… lots of people were there but it never felt overwhelmingly crowded. There were good restaurants and food stalls nearby and you can get a good massage on the beach. I spent so many hours at this beach on my trip enjoying the warm waters (lots of huge waves too, but that made it even more fun) and relaxing on the sand. I would highly recommend this area and this beach in particular to anyone visiting Phuket for the first time like I was!Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 31 July 2024

What a shame, the effect of mass tourism has hit Kata hard (both town and beach).
The beach itself is absolutely lovely in that it has beautiful soft white sand, palm and coconut trees and warm sea, however the crowds of people even though we visited outside of school holidays too was unbearable. You can hardly move when walking on the sand due to the crowds, and don't even think about going in the water as again it's so busy you could mistake it for a children's party at a swimming pool.
Kata is a little like Thailand's answer to Benidorm except instead of thousands of Brits, it's Russian tourists on package deals.
If there is a saving grace for Kata, it is the sunset. Once the majority of beach goers have left and the sun is about to set, it is stunning however the beach will still be very overcrowded, except this time with people getting their Instagram selfies with the sunset.
I will not return to Kata beach unfortunately. Tourism is good for Thailand, but tourism on this scale is dreadful in my opinion.

Though the waters here is not as nice as Karon, it is the most gentle sloping and almost no waves all year round. Great for swimming and you can actually swim the full length of the bay. Though the northern end there's usually Long Tail traffic and sometimes even divers doing shore dives. Lots of parking lining the beach and near sunset, locals will come for swimming. Nice beach to chill!

I was a bit spoilt first seeing this beach back in 2007 when things weren't so busy. In peak season this beach has many thousands of people on it (Mainly Russian, then Chinese) One thing on Phuket beaches travelers will notice who are used to, say, Bali is that there are very few hawkers and hasslers, you are mostly left alone. Shaded seat rentals are the norm and there is a (very expensive) bar and shops on the Southern end. Unfortunately whoever did the deal after the tsunami to basically allow Le Meridien hotel to take up the entire beach frontage has made access very difficult for generations of tourists to come who AREN'T staying there.

If you‘re looking to explore Thailand, I would definitely not recommend this place. It is so overrun by tourists and especially Russian culture, that there is nothing of Thail culture left. The food in the restaurants and the markets is not really good and more expensive than in the rest of the country, and there are almost no authentic Thai restaurants, whereas every restaurants offers Western food and a Russian menu. You can barely see any Thai people on the streets and in markets and restaurants, because they either work here or avoid Phuket. I would only recommend this place to you if you‘re looking for a nice beach, have money and don‘t care whether the surroundings are authentically Thai or not. That being said, aside from the beach Kata is also not particularly pretty.

Visited over Christmas and the new year. One of the better main stream beaches with gental sloping sand & clear waters. I was expecting good quality beach shacks serving Thai food dotted along the beach.... Not the case. Generic cafes full of Rude Russians with expensive food & drinks.
Phuket appears to be a mini Russia!
Kata Beach had a more local feel than the other bigger beaches.

This beach is well worth a visit for sunset. We tended to go late afternoon as the beach was packed full of rude Russian tourists all day, in fact the whole resort was full of rude Russian tourists over the Xmas period. Fortunately we didn't come across any Russians in our hotel so it didn't spoil our overall stay at Kata beach but we wouldn't stay again because of these very rude people.

Kata Beach is a beautiful bay of white sand and a clear sea, with palm trees that offer shade.
The beach of Kata is divided into two distinct parts: Kata Yai, the most important, and Kata Noi, located further south. These beautiful beaches have seen the development of new tourist facilities: high-end resorts, restaurants, bars, shops and massage parlours. There are fewer and fewer modest hotels, they have been bought, transformed, furnished, and prices have increased significantly. For lunch, a good option is to enjoy the buffets offered by the hotels. In the evening, street stalls offer cheap Thai cuisine.

Beautiful and quiet beach, we spent almost a week there. If you want, there is no need to rent an umbrella even if the sun beats down hard. The islet in front is the icing on the cake. I recommend walking at sunset when the sun is now weak and you can admire the low tide. I also recommend a jet ski ride, €40.00 for half an hour, beautiful.

We stayed at Kata Beach for 11 days from first week of August. There was a big Oil Spill off the coast of Thailand sometime late July, and on August 6th /7th some of it did eventually reach Phuket, including Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, pretty much the whole West Coast of Phuket. But by August 8th there was no sign of it, it had gone / been cleaned up. We were on the beach pretty much every day, and most people didn’t even notice, there were still heaps of people swimming, surfing etc every day.
Kata is still a nicer, prettier, quieter beach than Patong, you can walk 100M along the beach and easily get away from the crowds. The waves at Kata are a little bigger than Patong, so better for surfing etc. 2 Loungers and an umbrella is 200 baht if you need them, and although shops are only 100 meters away, drinks, beers, ice- creams, snacks etc are easily obtained from the mobile vendors walking along the beach, all of whom are very polite and not pushy. We liked our stay here and will happily return !

I would like to visit Thailand in June. It would be a graduation gift for my daughter so the whole family is going but im concern about the rain. Is the rain pretty bad in june? Anyone experienced thailand in june?
Written 1 September 2024
This might be a silly question, but coming in January as a solo traveller, love swimming in the sea, is it safe to leave basic belongings on the beach while i do that ?
Written 28 December 2023
From my observation, safety is not an issue, but considering big crowd of people, you never can be 100% sure. I recommend to walk to Kata Noi beach at 9.00, take the first row of sun bed and swim w.o. worry. You will see your belongings. As well, serving personal in Kata Noi looked to be much more nicer.

We are looking to visit with our 2 children at the end of May. They are keen to do water activities such as snorkelling, swimming and paddle boards. I have read that the sea is red flagged most days throughout the whole of the low season. Can anyone please advise? Obviously we will not swim if it’s not safe.
Written 31 August 2023
Kata beach is generally safe, and there are plenty of lifeguards about. But like most of Phuket, you do get regular thunderstorms, and when it is stormy the waves get bigger and the currents get stronger. When it gets dangerous the lifeguards put the red flags up. But sometimes it is only for a few hours, it really depends on the weather which can be quite changeable in May as it is the start of the rainy season. So, depending on how long you stay, you will probably get some calm sunny days and some rainy / stormy days.

Hi, I'm staying in Kata Beach for 3 days. Is it OK to hire a scooter one day to visit the other beaches? I know how to drive a scooter but I don't have international drive license. But I was told Thailand doesn't accept international licenses at all. I will be in trouble if police stops me?

Alugar scooter na Tailândia é muito fácil mas ... aconselho a ler este guia da Word Nomads: na página 10 tem informação sobre isso mas, ler o guia todo é útil - é só procurar em travel-safety/southeast-asia/thailand

Hi! Is it easy to get a taxi from Kata Beach to Patong Beach at night? I'm staying in Kata Beach but I want to visit Patong Beach at night one day. Also, is there places in Kata where I can book day-trips to the islands? Or should I do this online?
Written 25 August 2019
Hi,
There are plenty of taxis and tuk-tuk to go between kata, karon and patong at night. We used Grab to book in-phuket transportation.
You can book day tours from kata beach from your hotel and various shops along tbe way to beach or in restaurants. we booked tours where we hired our bike.
